Muhyiddin: APs to be retained

Minister of International Trade and Industry Muhyiddin Yassin today surprised everyone when he said that the government was retaining the Approved Permits (AP) policy for the next ten to eleven years.

His ministry was now backtracking on the promise the prime minister's department made in 2006, when they announced the policy would end in 2010.

"A decision has been made and we are not changing it," said Muhyiddin. The decision to keep the AP, Muhyiddin said, was made to prepare present traders for a time when there were no more APs.

"So that they would be able to stand on their own without relying on APs anymore," he added.

"Ten to eleven years down the line, whoever wants to import (any vehicles) they have the liberty to do that," he said, noting that the companies who have got the permits before the removal would have a strong base by then.

APs are only issued to Bumiputera businesses.

So far, 148 cars and motorbikes companies have been issued with APs.

I have no qualms about the APs; only 148 families enjoy this benefits out of possibly 7 million families in Malaysia.

The APs privileges as part of the ketuanan thing had promoted the aggressive imports of cars which runs counter to the pretension policy of protecting Proton, another Malaysia Boleh conceptualization and also a ketuanan conceptualization; and ironically, both being conceptualized by the great sage, Mahathir himself, of which he later landed disparaged in the Mahaleel saga.

Proton is set to conquer the Chinese car market!

The first batch of 384 units of Gen.2 cars, rebranded as EuropeStar , was shipped yesterday.

NST reported that a total of 1,600 units of Gen.2 are scheduled to be shipped to China by the end of next month. (NST BizNews, pg36).

However, the StarBiz reported that Proton has shipped 408 units to date, and will be shipping 1,500 units monthly over the next 20 months to fulfill the order of 30,000 units.

What a great sales. Lest we forget, Tengku Mahaleel also shipped thousands of Proton cars to Middle East, all sold on consignments. It was not clear whether any car was unsold and how much was the writedown.

Meanwhile it was reported that Toyota produced a total of 9.36 million cars for 2007, surpassing GM Motors who managed 9.30 million. This made Toyota the new leader of the automobile industry.

It was also reported that Hyundai will be spending US$11b in 2008 to upgrade facility and raise production.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd will be cutting the price of its cars from 192,124 rupees (RM8.85 = 100 rupees) to about 100,000 rupees (about RM8,850).

China's Chery QQ is sold at RMB29,000 (about RM14,000) and Chery is projected to roll out it's 2 millionth car by 2009. Chery rolled out its first car in Dec18th 1999 and by 2007 August, it rolled out it's first millionth car.

Can Proton compete in the global automobile market? We are Malaysians, and as Malaysian, Boleh is our doctrine; we can, kita mesti boleh, Proton Boleh! What matters is Boleh, nothing else.

But why named our car EuropeStar? Aren't Proton proud to be MalaysiaStar or BumiStar or MalayStar; why Europe? Aren't we changing to Western culture? Isn't this anti-Malaysian and betrayal of our own identity? Where are those UMNO MPs who talks so much about patriotism, nationalism and traitorism?
