NST front page reported today there were 290 reported cases of child rape in the first 3 months of last year in which the perpetuators were the fathers or relatives.
In 2003, there were a total of 768 cases.

The breakdown were:

112 cases of child rape are committed by stepfathers;
72 by fathers
42 by uncles
20 by brother-in-laws
6 by step-brothers
33 by cousins and 5 by grandfathers.

Deputy Prime Minister said the statistics were appalling. He said society should be more vocal about child rape and abuse so that public awareness on these issues would be raised. Najib also said there were 821 cases of child abuses in 2002. In 2001, there were 1,036 reported cases; 327 involving mothers and 272 cases involving fathers. The breakdown for 2002 were:

Abused by mothers – 262
Abused by fathers – 222.
Malay parents – 56%
Indian parents – 22%
Chinese parents – 16%

There may be many more cases which were not reported.
