Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng moved into his official residence after he found out from the caretaker that the “leaky roof” was not leaking at all, but just water dripping from the air condition.
He said that the estimate given by the state government and JKR had been "grossly overstated."
“It was only water dripping from the air condition vents. I don't understand how they could include repairing a leaking roof in their evaluation when the roof is not leaking," Lim told newsmen.
He said the state government would check on how the RM300,000 came to be quoted, adding that “this is one of the problems of government operations.”
"They tend to put a much higher amount in their estimations. This doesn't inspire public confidence. We'll now come out with a fresh evaluation on the cost and reveal it to the public," he said.

Asked if he had heard of rumours that the house was haunted, he said: "Hey, don't scare my children.

Now, the worms are beginning to crawl out from the pandora. JKR have to provide an answer. How is it that a roof that is not leaking is reported by JKR to be leaking? Where is the competencies of the engineers and QS? Was it intentional? or, was it intended to test the new CM? What would have happened if it was BN who decides to proceed with the project award? Kan-tau lah!

Nothing new lah. This is the BN legacy.
Look at the parliment house and after spending RM100 million still leaking. Maybe it is the air conditioner duct like in LGE house.
Satu Project dari BN......
Bravo to LGE for spotting the problem.
Moo,
I think PR States will help unearth all the leakages and pillages.
JKR learn all this trick from their UMNO DUNGUS and supported by the Same-Value lor.
Thats one way they sleazy Gomen Servant can go holiday overseas, keep Benze at home, mistresses and wives, golfing over the weekend, and lastly get Latuk-ship before they Sei-Zhore!
Yes; that is what Brutal Openess means and Gomen sleazy fella will do whatever it takes to make quick bucks to take them to Hell.
Ooorrr...miiii..thorrrr....fhattt
Bond,
This all started in the 1980s; thanks to Mahathir.
Doc, I afraid the problem are just tip of the iceberg, worst than many people can imagine.
When graft take place, the culture has sipping country governing. Besides government, graft also happens in financial institution, most of the listed company as well.
And this happens to hundred billions of petrol money that go to neverland.
Moo_t,
The public statement is a tip of the iceberg; the problem and facts are known to us as we're all part of the system which survive with the parasitic values and culture.
Its built into the system.
Anything which the government touches, it may cost 50% - 200% more than the fair market value.
What happens to the balance - your guess is as good as mine.
BTW, good luck to Lim Guan Eng staying in that haunted Rumah Tetamu. My late grandfather lived in the neighbourhood, and the kids around there used to go past the place in the evenings - its a spooky place. Its properly maintained, but nobody has lived there for decades, except the caretaker who lives at the back of the property.
All the previous Penang Chief Ministers were local Penangites who preferred to live in their own home.
Kittykat46,
Are you sure it is so scary? LGE had moved-in and is staying there now. It was previously the governor's residence in 2001.
Maverick,
No lah. I know the area very well- I ran around the neighbourhood as a kid. My late grandfather was a rather wealthy man, as Penangites would know the neighbourhood is mostly filled with old but large, impressive homes.
The Governor's residence since Merdeka has been on Jalan Utama, grand building with grand grounds.
Rumah Tetamu, where LGE is staying is a big Two-Storey Wooden bungalow. Its supposed to be an official Chief Minister's residence but has never been used as such. All the Penang CM's since Merdeka chose to live in their own homes. Apart from the caretaker, Nobody has actually lived there for more than 50 years...
Kittykat46,
I must go get a monk to do some prayer for LGE. So scary to hear it.
should call for a third party condition survey and repair costing!!
You are concerned about estimation and then expense its natural. If you wants to save you property and budget both then Roof Repair a better option.
