Brother Chavez meets Brother Abdullah

"I'll see you at the airport, brother Lah." That's what Zubaidah Abu Bakar reported from Caracas, Venezuela. It is not often that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, turns up at the airport to greet a visiting leader but he will do so, just for, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. It's really special and even Mahathir didn't get this sort of treatment.

Venezuelan officials said Chavez would normally despatch his lesser rank minister to welcome leaders of other nations but this time around he will himself personally accompany Abdullah from the airport and throughout the full three-day official visit to Venezuela.

They are brothers!

"The visit is to heighten economic collaboration, explore new sectors and open new frontiers after 20 years of bilateral relations with Venezuela," said the aide.

Despite 20 years of diplomatic relations, the last 17 years under Mahathir, there is still no significant investment between the two countries and Abdullah and Chavez are expected to address the situation.

Abdullah is scheduled to embark on a helicopter tour of the Orinoco Belt and visit projects under Venezuelan state-owned company Petroleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA).

Syed Hamid Albar, Rafidah Aziz, Samy Vellu, Bernard Dompok and 40 Malaysian businessmen will also attend a business luncheon with Abdullah.

Chavez personally met Abdullah at the airport because he anxiously wanted to have a look at photos of his new yahct. Imagine the leader of one of the richest oil-producers in the world still could not afford a personal luxury yahct, while ours can. And he has been president longer than Abdullah.
