Universities are not factories - Dr. M
Malaysian universities should take care not to become degree-producing factories with no emphasis on quality or meeting the country’s need, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad said yesterday.
He said universities were the pinnacle of the education system and reflected the nation’s desire to enhance the mastery of knowledge among its people for the purpose of development.
“It is mastery of knowledge that gives a degree its meaning and value,” Mahathir said in his acceptance speech upon being conferred an honorary doctorate in development studies by UNIMAS, Sarawak.
Dr. Mahathir added that the acquiring of knowledge in universities needed to be balanced with character development.
"Knowledge without good character is worthless.".
"Mastery of knowledge should be accompanied by nobility in character. Only then can a knowledgeable person contribute meaningfully to society and country."
