Deputy Finance Minister Ahmad Maslan said:

 I don't have any shop in Klang Valley nor anywhere. But I am prepared to assist any one, Bumiputera or Indians or Orang Asli or anybody else to buy a shophouse or Soho anywhere in Klang Valley. There are plenty of shops awaiting new buyers or interested buyers. So, please contact me or any real estate agent if you need to buy them. And dear Ahmad Maslan, please help the Bumiputeras to buy those available shops in Klang Valley so that they can help to increase the ownership differentials and ensure "National Unity" (if national unity is the criteria measured by owning shops in Klang Valley, or anywhere else). 

Today, after being in college and universities for more than 10 years, I discovered that all my lecturers have failed to make me understand that national unity, or, national economic distribution is measured vide shops ownership. My lecturers taught me that "people who buy shops are those who need a premise to do business and/or to invest in properties, either for rent or hoping that property prices will appreciate and thereof he will gain profits. Shops are investments ... and if it affects national unity and economic distributions, then please go and buy as much as you can to solve national unity problems.

What about those who hoards cashs? I mean those who keeps cash or cash deposits? And what about those who keeps (i.e. pile up) credit card debts? Will these also affects national economic distribution or debt ownership? Can Ahmad Maslan clarify that debt ownership is also needed to ensure national economic distribution? If that is the case, I must go and advice all my children to start borrowing as much as possible to ensure national economic distribution is achieved; all for the sake of national unity!!!

EPF is buying shopping complexes; is it because of national unity or investments?

But EPF is buying so many properties in London and New York too! Will buying foreign shops and properties affects national unity? Dear Ahmad Maslan, please clarify! 

I am just puzzled; who is stopping the Bumis from buying or owning shops? Maybe, Maybank, Khazanah, Tabung Haji, LTAT and all those institutions including Syed Mokhtar should buy up whatever available shops in Klang Valley to distribute it to all my Bumi friends and fellow Malaysians, including my brother, Dato Rocky Bru, A Voice, Nuraina and Marina Mahathir too. And please don't forget my colleagues and staff in my company too!!! Dear Amin, Fahmi and Wada, please call Datuk Ahmad Maslan to assist as we need shops for our new office (kalau boleh lah)

Hypochondriac Misanthrope

Prominent lawyer and politician Zaid Ibrahim questioned whether nominations for the Ibrahim Ali award was open to all races in UiTM, including the Kadazan and other indigenous people who have shown the same criterion of "having an outstanding ethnic awareness", or whether it was exclusive to Malay students.

"What does 'ethnic awareness' mean? Does a Malay who has the value and spirit of fascism, like (Adolf) Hitler who hated the Jews and other races, qualify (for the award)? What are the methods and activities to prove the 'ethnic awareness' of that student?

"Does the student need to talk and orate on issues in accordance with Ibrahim Ali (right)? Should the speech and actions of the student comply with the laws? Does the student, in order to qualify, need to fan the spirit and emotions of other students to hate other races without any positive element and universal human values?" Zaid asked.

Zaid stressed that a race could only advance if the community practiced progressive, positive contemporary and healthy values and attitudes.

Apart from providing tertiary education, knowledge and exposure to the young generation of the community, he said, they also need to be instilled with global, rational and scientific thought.

"A successful race is a race that can make concrete contributions for common interest. It is not enough for the race to be good in politicking, which is full of empty rhetoric, and only good in giving speech and oratory."

Zaid has suggested an award for a towering bumiputera student that will emphasize mutual respect and harmony among races.

All our universities will then be promoting and encouraging their students to vie for such awards and the students will have to act, behave and promote ethnocentric groupings and each social groupings will fight the other to gain popularity and awards which ultimately divides the society into classes, promoting discrimination, divisions and megalomaniacs.

RM5,000 award? That's f**king cheap; many individuals can afford to sponsor such award. RM5,000 can draw 15,000 students to desecrate a society and promote hate and satanic cult. Do we need a Hitler or Nero? No, we don't; we need only an Ibrahim Ali to sent the society to hell.

Nazri tells Utusan: "STOP BEING RACIST"

Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz condemn Utusan Malaysia for its “outdated” racist propaganda, saying the Umno-owned newspaper must accept that Malaysia is a multi-racial country.

“They should stop it because how would we (the Malays) like it if people say that Malays are lazy and stupid? We would also get angry. Don’t do to others what we don’t want others to do unto us,” the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department told The Malaysian Insider.

Nazri had earlier castigated the Malay daily for defending the controversial National Civics Bureau, or Biro Tata Negara (BTN), for its courses which he said were racist.

“And more so now, under the prime minister (Datuk Seri Najib Razak) and 1 Malaysia, we must accept that Malaysia is a multi-racial country,” he added.

“I have reiterated that we must learn from Nicole David and other athletes. It is not acceptable to be a racist in 2010. It does not matter if we keep saying that we are not racist if our actions show otherwise. Enough with racism already.

“50 years after Independence, where are we headed to? Are we still going to deny that the Chinese and Indian community have any right to stay in this country? I think it is outdated,” Nazri added.

Nazri added that Malaysians can longer accept categorising minorities with derogatory names.

“Malaysians, including the Malays, can no longer accept calling Chinese as immigrants and Indians with derogatory terms like ‘keling’.

“I think that if we want to act on a few that question Malay rights, then we should attack them only but not the whole community. If there are one or two individual Chinese or Indians that question Malay rights then we attack them only. We should not label the whole community as anti-Malay.

“As an elected representative, I know that that all the races are enjoying good relationships, so we should not take one or two bad examples as a basis to attack the whole community. I cannot agree with that. I am very much against racism. I hate racism,” he explained.

Hari Raya Message

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has called on Muslims and Malaysians to strengthen harmony and break down their prejudices for the sake of the future generation.

"Let's make use of occasions like this to restore and strengthen relations among Muslims and Malaysians," he said in his Hari Raya Aidilfitri message.

Najib said: "Unfortunately, there are certain quarters who peddle hatred and try to deny this. They try to sow seeds of ungratefulness in the minds of their people in their attempt to achieve their narrow objectives."

"Let's break down the walls of prejudice, hatred and apathy for the sake of our children's future."

He called on Muslims in Malaysia to carry the torch of unity and progress, saying that as the community which formed the majority, they not only had the rights, but more importantly, the responsibilities to shoulder.

Najib said Muslims in Malaysia had many reasons to be grateful, as they were living in a peaceful and prosperous country at a time when Muslims around the world were facing oppression, either politically or economically, or due to war.

Najib hails Utusan Malaysia

Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak hailed the Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia today for its role in representing the absolute interest of the Malays, but however, he also urged the newspaper to also voice out the rights of all Malaysians.

“Utusan is known for its trademark and its trademark is to voice the desire of the people, especially the Malay community,” he said in his speech during a breaking of fast function at Sri Utusan Printing Complex here.

However Datuk Seri Najib Razak warned that the media must not only report ethically but also responsibly.

“I hope that we will not only voice the rights of only the Malay community but for the other races as well. When we want to defend rights (of a community), we must also discuss about responsibility,” he said.

He also urged the media to play an important role to shape the nation into 1 Malaysia.

“Media has the responsibility to help in the journey travelled by Malaysia.

The journey which seeks common understanding, openness in thinking. The journey which will also test our struggle.

“If in this journey, we bring chaos and sentiments without looking at the bigger perspective then the journey will go through many difficulties,” he said.

Utusan Malaysia has been criticized for ratcheting up racial tensions.

The Umno-owned newspaper was responsible for running daily stories criticizing DAP as anti-Islam and implying Anwar Ibrahim as a Malay Traitor. It also publish many articles which we observe could provoke racial paranoia and raise racial tensions among the various communities.

Zaid torches Utusan for stoking racial flames

Zaid Ibrahim has lashed out at Utusan Malaysia for playing up racial sentiments.

He said the articles which appeared in the daily's Sunday edition reminded him of how far removed the paper is from the reality of life in Malaysia.

"This is probably the reason why its readership is on the decline. It's theme and main plot is race, race and race," he added in a blog posting.

Zaid cited a particular article with the heading 'Melayu dikhianati?' (Malays betrayed) penned by Awang Selamat.

In the article, the former Umno leader said, the writer lamented that he is hurt by the demands, which reek of racism, of the non-Malays since the last general election.

"In other words, Malaysians must not hurt the feelings of Awang Selamat because when Awang Selamat is hurt, Umno is hurt and when Umno is hurt, the Malays are hurt.

"This is the logic of Awang Selamat," he added.

Zaid said the writer made no mention of the 'extreme' demands made by the non-Malays in his article.

"If they (the non-Malays) are asking about scholarships, land allocation and employment opportunities, can't these questions be addressed rationally and based on facts?

"Why get hurt so easily?" he asked.

Are all their demands baseless?

The former de facto law minister also questioned if all the demands of the non-Malays, whose rights are enshrined under the Federal Constitution, were baseless?

According to Awang Selamat, he said, this appears to be the case because "50 years ago Umno and the Malays were generous enough to offer citizenship to their (non-Malays) ancestors."

"Since Umno had been gracious in according them citizenship, their descendants should never make any demands because they must always be grateful to Umno," he added.

Zaid pointed out that this is the exact mindset which is no longer viable and has been rejected by all races.

When a citizen, be it a Malay, Chinese or Indian, asks for something, he said it is the duty of the government and the media to evaluate it in order to grant the request.

"If the demand is excessive, explain but don't raise history to cover up shortcomings. Do not get angry always, threaten and dish out pieces of incomplete history for political mileage," he said.

Zaid also reminded that the country obtained independence because the British agreed with the alliance on the terms. "When we agree, we must honour the agreement," he said.

In view of this, he said there was no reason to state that "we were being generous in granting citizenship to the Chinese and Indians."

"The fact is, that is the term we agreed to. At the time, it was impossible for the British to relinquish Malaya if the issue of citizenship for Chinese and Indians was not resolved.

"The British were strict on this issue and Umno agreed. That is the price which the Alliance accepted with an open heart. Does Utusan have different historical facts?" he added.

Zaid said even if one went by the perception that Umno was generous in giving citizenship to non-Malays, there is still no room for Awang Selamat's 'feudalist mindset' in a modern nation.

Those with 'blind hearts'

Meanwhile, he said another article by senior writer Zulkiflee Bakar had advised Utusan readers not to be 'historically blind'.

"I suppose Malays like myself are historically blind. But history is not difficult to learn and I am interested in knowing more.

"However, the most unfortunate people are those whose hearts are blind. When our hearts are blind, no amount of facts or knowledge can fill the void," he added.

Zaid said instead of stoking racial sentiments, Utusan should help the prime minister find ways to develop the economy via pragmatic and just policies.

"To Utusan, the Malays fail because of the Chinese and Indians. Wake up Utusan, non-Malays and Malays themselves can tell the difference between the Malay race and Umno, they know that when an Umno policy is criticised, it is not challenging the Malays but Umno.

"Much effort is being put into creating friction between the Malays and Chinese. Believe me, racial flames will not burn as brightly as before," he said.

"The Malay mindset has changed. They know the challenges that lie ahead in the world and the changes which they must make. Only Utusan has not realised this," he added.

The 215th meeting of the Conference of Rulers, held at Istana Maziah here, issued a special press statement yesterday on several matters enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

Following is the statement published by NST:

Rulers defend social contract

The statement by the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal, Engku Tan Sri Ibrahim Engku Ngah, was issued after the 215th meeting of the Conference of Rulers on Thursday.

He said the Malay Rulers held the constitutional role of safeguarding their “special privileges, position, eminence and greatness, as well as to safeguard Islam, Malay as the national language, and the genuine interests of the other communities in Malaysia.”

He said the Rulers warned that there should never be any attempt to test or challenge issues related to the social contract.

“The actions of certain quarters in disputing and questioning these matters, which formed the primary basis for the formation of Malaysia and are enshrined in the Federal Constitution, had caused provocation and uneasiness among the people.

“In retaliation, several quarters particularly Malay leaders whether in the government or non-governmental organisations as well as individuals had expressed their dissatisfaction and anger against those who had made the statements, reports and organised the forums.

“Among the reasons identified for these to have occurred is the cursory knowledge of those concerned regarding the historical background as to why these provisions were enshrined in the Federal Constitution and the influence of their attempts to implicate the principles of impartiality and justice without regard for the historical background and social condition of this country.

“Unless this phenomenon is arrested immediately, it can lead to disunity and racial strife that can undermine the peace and harmony which has all this while brought progress, development and success to the nation,” he added.

“As such, it is necessary for the Conference of Rulers to emphasise and remind all quarters of these constitutional provisions besides giving emphasis to the assurance of safeguarding the genuine rights of other communities.”

The Rulers also called on the Malays to be united saying “it has to be emphasised that this agenda is more important and foremost than political or factional interests”.

“Non-Malays should not worry because their rights are guaranteed under the Constitution,” he said.

A timely reminder … A warning to some … A message for all … Above all … A Call To Reason

Most Malaysians saw it as a message of unity, peace and harmony … Of the need to RESPECT the Federal Constitution and each other … Respect the rights of all communities … A reminder of the things we risked losing.

They all agreed that the position of the Malay rulers, the privileges of the Malays, the status of Islam and Bahasa Malaysia had not been questioned by the rakyat but a few politicians for their narrow interests.

…But they all agreed that it was a warning not to exploit the social contract for political mileage …

For the Malay Solidarity Council, the statement was precisely what they have been campaigning for in light of what they see as an increasing tide of challenges to Malay special privileges.

"Society has just gone overboard in arguing about the social contract and this statement is something that is needed to stop all these disputes," said council chairman Tan Sri Ismail Hussin.

The council represents about 200 Malay NGOs which in May convened a special congress, which in turn sent a petition to the rulers asking that they put a stop to attempts to dispute Malay privileges.

Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said no community should assume that the statement referred to one of them specifically.

Historian Professor Tan Sri Khoo Kay Khim described the statement as a reminder to all Malaysians of the centrality of the Constitution and the Rukun Negara.

Bar Council president Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan agreed that the statement reaffirmed the importance of the Federal Constitution and was a reminder of the guarantees accorded to all Malaysians.

"It reminds citizens that the guarantees were a result of well-considered negotiations, resulting in the social contract which we as citizens must respect. It is a much needed message of unity, peace and harmony," said Ambiga.

"Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi must be suffering from amnesia.

"That is the most charitable conclusion to draw after he said today that the perception of Umno being a bully in the Barisan Nasional was off the mark. Wasn’t it only a month ago that Umno division chief Datuk Ahmad Ismail exhibited supreme arrogance when he showed no remorse for calling Malaysian Chinese immigrants at a rally in the run-up to the Permatang Pauh by-election.

"And when Gerakan stood up to him, he behaved just like a schoolyard bully.

"He asked for Gerakan to be kicked out of the BN. Not surprising that that the incident did not register with Abdullah as he addressed the MCA for the last time as the chairman of BN and president of Umno.

"He and the party’s supreme council members only took disciplinary action against the Bukit Bendera politician after being pushed into a corner. Even then, it was half-hearted attempt to apply balm on the raw feelings of the non-Malays.

"Is this PM so out of touch with reality that he does not understand how frustrated BN leaders have become in dealing with arrogant Umno politicians."

YB J’s NEW POLITICS

Restless morning. YB Josephine, who is more fondly known as YB J was fidgety. All along the journey to the Cha People’s Assembly Hall in the capital city, her thoughts were troubled. The accusations that she was anti-Islam and anti-Malay really haunt her from the previous night. Why only now she was like this, she herself did not know. She was also not sure whether her driver, Ahmad, was aware of her of her troubled spirits at the time. Even if he knew, so what?, she whispered to herself.

The driver was already aware of her political stand regarding her ethnic community’s interests vis-a-vis the Malays. And she knew Ahmad respected her views, even if anti-Islam and anti-Malay, as basic rights of living in a democratic nation. Were not fundamental freedoms guaranteed by Article 5 to Article 13 of the Federal Constitution? However YB J acknowledged that the democracy was less than perfect and often abused by the authorities. However this fact did not hamper the people giving the opposition a place in the Dewan Rakyat. YB Josephine was one of them.

Ah, the accusations that she was anti-Islam, anti-Malay were pointed and reckless, and appeared to consume her. The accusations were also baseless, her inner voice told her. She was convinced that the statements that she made in the name of diverse ethnic communities to champion the interests of her own community, were not racist. Amnesty International, the international human rights organisation would agree. Also with the United Nations. The Opposition Leader, in Parliament also never viewed her as racist. Those who viewed her as racist were only the Malays in the Malay People’s Party (POM).

“I am also not anti-Islam. I am not anti-Malay” the two-term YB who represented the People’s Action Party felt. She had been a party member since being a student even though the Universities and Unversity-Colleges Act forbade students from being involved directly in any political organisation. In any event, the enforcement of the law was inconsistent. Moreover, this was an archaic law, YB J said.

She felt “I am only championing the interests of my ethnic community, just as the Malay leaders in POM fought for the interests of their community, the same way the leaders of the Muslim People’s Party (POI) fought for their community using the cover of religion.

Indeed, YB J felt her boldness in championing the interests of her community had help her win her parliamentary seat for the second time. This time with a bigger majority. What made her prouder was her cause which was viewed as anti-Malay and anti-Islam now was supported by Malay voters in that electoral constituency. Initially, she herself was surprised when told that a large portion of the Malay voters who represent 20 percent overall of the registered voters in the Alam Maya parliamentary constituency had voted for her.

“This was an extraordinary development. It is not possible that they supported me”, she felt. But when she was informed by her party workers that the Malay voters of all ballot boxes had switched to supporting her, she accepted this with an open mind. Very good if the Malays supported her ‘New Malaysia’ struggle.

Not content with the monologue with her own feelings, YB J spontaneously turned towards Ahmad, her driver who was all along focussing on his work.

“You think I am anti-Islam, anti-Malay?

Ahmad who was approaching retirement did not answer, as if he did not hear the question. His eyes were fixed on the road. His job was to ensure that YB J got safely to the gathering that she wanted to attend. And punctually. This gathering was important as YB J would dialogue with the younger generation of her ethnic community who were studying overseas but happened to be in the country on vacation. Ahmad himself was unsure if the student who had ridiculed the anthem Negara Ku while studying in an overseas university was in the group. Even if he was, YB J’s driver was not bothered. The boy was rude. Was it right that Negara Ku was deemed Negara Kuku (cuckoo in English) meaning mad? His rude action was rationalised with creativity. Only Ahmad felt that if everyone was allowed to debase the National Anthem with lyrics that ridiculed the lives of Muslims in the name of creativity, there will be a negative impact on race relations.

Ahmad did not know what really bothered his boss from earlier on. She was rarely like this. Ahmad could sense that YB J was different that morning. He could read the restlessness and listlessness of YB J. As if there was something not right although he was unsure what was churning within YB J. As far as Ahmad remembered, YB J had never discussed politics with him, much less current issues - other than giving instructions relating to a trip or work schedule. YB J also did not ask if he voted for POM or whichever party in the recent elections.

Usually, all along a journey, whether to the office or to other official or unofficial functions, YB J would spend her time reading the newspapers or study files. But that morning, YB J was just different. She look listless. Restless. Her thoughts seemed clouded. Whatever she did seemed not right. Now, she would study the key address to be delivered shortly, analysing the ‘New Malaysia, New Politics’ plan that she pioneered. Then, she would read the newspapers that as a rule, accompanied YB J wherever she went.

Ahmad tried to guess at the possibility that YB J’s restlessness was connected with the national political temperature that was heating up. The heat was felt everywhere. POM itself was faced with a serious leadership crisis. Different party factions were struggling. If not for the weakened government political position after the loss of the two-thirds majority, likely an Operasi Lalang such as that of 1987. would long ago have been carried out. Possibly, under the present leadership, the government took a more liberal view of its critics.

Ahmad also thought of the possibility that YB J’s feelings were disturbed by the action of unknown persons in throwing petrol bombs into the family home of the Member of Parlimen of Sepohon Beringin, Su Lan. Maybe, Ahmad thought, YB J was worried that a similar incident may happen to her or her family.

Who knows, his boss, YB J could be the victim, after Su Lan’s family. And what were thrown were really bombs. Even exploded. Isn’t YB J doomed? Suddenly, Ahmad thought of the suicide bombing incident that occurred at Damascus, Syria that he watched on the TV3 Prime Bulletin a few days ago. If the incidents that were a daily occurrence in Iraq, Israel, the West Bank, Gaza or Afganistan spread to this country, how unfortunate this blessed counrty would be. We need the protection of 44 angels, Ahmad felt in his heart.

But Ahmad thought, it is dangerous if the warning was not heeded. He remembered the story of what happened on 13th May 1969. His father told the story of the tragedy after the 10th May elections how Malays and Chinese killed each other. The fight to deny the Malays and other Bumiputra races their special rights as guaranteed by the Federal Constitution, was unacceptable to them. The inappropriate and insulting words used by the supporters of the opposition parties while having their huge victory celebration processions in Kuala Lumpur and other major towns after the 1969 elections could not be stomached by the Malays anymore. Machetes that had been left blunt all these years were sharpened. In this terrible scenario, strife broke out that resulted in Parliament being suspended and emergency rule declared. The country was placed under curfew. Ahmad himself was not born yet. Not long after, power was transferred from Tunku Abdul Rahman to his deputy, Tun Abdul Razak.

“Mat, am I anti-Malay and anti-Islam?,” YB J abruptly repeated her question when there was no answer from her driver.

Ahmad, who thus far had been silent answered impassively: “Perhaps not, YB.” He gave a veiled answer. His meaning: Perhaps so, perhaps not, depending on the beholder.

“What do you meant perhaps not?”

“This is a question of perception, YB”. That’s the perception. The fact is YB does not hate Malays nor hate Islam. YB is merely fighting for the interests of YB’s community. It is not wrong for YB to do that. If YB did not fight for the interests of YB’s community, then for whom? But YB’s ways are perhaps misunderstood”.

“You mean …?” asked YB who was still unclear.

Depends

“Yes, this depends who’s evaluating. Not only amongst Malays but also amongst non-Malays. YB should remember that even amongst non-Malays, not all accept YB’s ‘New Malaysia’ politics. If not, how is it that a monoethnic party such as the Chinese People’s Party (POC) is still sustaining?”

“What do you mean… I am not so clear?”

“Yes, to YB, your fight is for all ethnic communities. However, by YB’s actions, it is not obvious that you are fighting for all. YB wants to eradicate the Jawi script and replace that with Chinese characters. To others, this is not a fighting for all ethnic communities. This is fighting for one ethnic community. If it is true that YB is fighting for all, YB should defend the Jawi script”, Ahmad answered, emboldened.

Sensing that his boss wanted to hear more of his views, Ahmad said: “If YB really wanted to fight for all ethnic communities, the interests of Malays should not be cast aside while YB is focussing on the interests of the Chinese community. YB should fight for both ethnic communities at the same time. I am sure the response would be different. YB would be seen as wanting to protect the interests of YB’s ethnic community but at the same time without denying the rights of the Malays.

That was the fight of the POM and POC, YB J “grunted” in her heart. I am fed up with this Ahmad, she told herself. I am pioneering new politics and do not want to be bound to an old political framework, she told herself.

YB J’s conversation with her driver ended there. She did not wished to hear her driver’s nonsensical views anymore. She wanted to pander to her feelings. I believe in the ‘New Politics’, the ‘New Malaysia’, she reiterated to herself. Every citizen, regardless of origin, should be given equal rights under the law. No ethnic community should be given special treatment. No citizen should be given second class status. We are all Malaysian people.

YB J did not want to entertain Ahmad anymore. Instead she studied the Utusan Malaysia newspaper which was officially boycotted by her party. Her attention focussed on an article entitled “Don’t Erase the National Legacy” that was written by a younger generation Chinese who rejected the ‘New Politics, New Malaysia’ thesis.

Ah, another propaganda to despise my ethnic community, YB J felt. Perhaps this article was written by a Malay. They still consider my community as immigrants. The new generation is “useless’, YB J felt. Her heart told her: It is true. My forebears travelled to this blessed land to seek their fortune, to free themselves from poverty and miseries of life in China. That was then. Present generation Chinese were Malaysian citizens and they should be treated as Malaysian citizens.

Awoken

As YB J was immersed in her daydreaming, she was aroused by her driver’s voice that said, “We have arrived, YB”

Waiting outside for her were the organisers of the dialogue that would soon commence. One of them opened YB J’s car door, greeted her and introduced her to other members of the organising committee. Accompanied by them, YB J proceeded to the stage. According to her estimate, there were about 500 people in the hall that morning. She was proud that there were so many people of her ethnic community who were keen to meet her. It was a source of great pride to YB J that these people studied overseas on their own funds, not with government aid.

After the welcome speeches were over, YB J was invited to give her speech. This was the moment that YB J had waited for. Her ‘New Politics, New Malaysia’ plan would be announced to the world. She remembered Kee Thuan Chye’s book entitled “March 8th - The Day Malaysia Awoke”. The momentum of the Malaysian people or more correctly, the non-Malay Malaysian citizens who had awoken must be enhanced. That morning, she was determined to do so.

But, unbeknownst to YB J, amongst the 500 younger generation people, there were some who did not agree with her political views. One of them was determined to correct YB J’s political deviation in his own way.

When YB J stood up to go to the speaker’s rostrum, a young person from backstage walked calmly towards her direction. YB J smiled at the youth. She thought the young person of her ethnic community wanted to accompany her to to the rostrum or to greet her.

YB J extended her hand. All of a sudden, YB J was bewildered and stood frozen. She could not believe what she was seeing. Gripped tightly in the hands of the youth who appeared be intent on embracing her outstretched hand was a pistol of the Revolver type that was aimed directly at YB J’s chest.

Without uttering a word, the youth released a few shots. One of the shots hit YB J’s heart exactly. She collapsed to the floor.

The audience started to panic. Those on the stage were also bewildered to see what had happened. The situation became confused and chaotic. The organisers who had not expected this unfortunate incident did not know what to do. A few police personnel in civilian clothes, who were uninvited guests at the function, dashed towards the stage. Their uniformed colleagues who were on duty outside rushed into hall.

But before they could do anything, a few more gunshots were heard. This time, it was the youth who collapsed.

When the police arrived at the place of the incident, both of them - YB J and the neatly-dressed youth were dead.

While the body of the unknown youth was being examined, found hidden on the body was a note, neatly typed in the national language.

It read: YB Josephine is a threat to harmony. Better that her life be ended so that the multi-ethnic people can live in peace in this blessed land. I sacrifice for the future

Report lodged against Khir Toyo for stirring up 'azans'

A police report has been lodged against former Selangor menteri besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo and a blog (pembelamelayu blogspot) for allegedly spreading “malicious slander” and “lies” about certain quarters within the Selangor government lobbying for directives against azans in the state.

Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud of PAS lodged the report at the Dang Wangi police station complaining that Khir Toyo’s statement, published in Malay daily Utusan Malaysia on Tuesday, was “maliciously intended and aimed at raising the anger and anxiety of Malay Muslims”.

In the Utusan report, Khir was reported to have urged the opposition Pakatan Rakyat-led Selangor government not to concede to purported moves by “a certain party” to disallow azans (calls for prayers) emanating from loudspeakers of mosques in Puchong and Kota Damansara.

Khir also lamented that “while we practice freedom of religion, members of a certain religion celebrate to the extent that roads are closed, Muslims do not protest.”

Meanwhile, on the pembelamelayu blogspot, Khir was quoted on June 26 as alleging that Selangor exco and DAP leader Teresa Kok had submitted a petition to Umno’s Seri Serdang state assemblyperson Satim Diman which supposedly described the azans as “disturbing the peace” of local residents.

Siti Mariah, however, said she had checked with Kok as well as the state assembly hansard containing Satim’s speech and said she had ascertained that all the allegations regarding the azans were not true.

“The issue of there being a directive against azans does not arise at all,” she told reporters after lodging the police report.

She said Mohd Khir’s statements are “lies, slander, and maliciously intended at raising the anger and anxiety of Malay-Muslims in the country and to incite their hatred against party leaders in Pakatan Rakyat, particularly DAP,”.

Siti Mariah said only Umno has exploited racial and religious issues in its attempts to regain its lost support. During its rule in Selangor, it was behind the “locking up” of mosques and the ban against some religious speakers.

“DAP leaders have never stepped into or meddled in Islamic affairs. All this while, it has been Umno that has oppressed Islam,” she said.

Hulu Kelang state assemblyperson Saari Sungib also said he and several other PAS leaders, including state exco in charge of Islamic affairs Dr Hassan Ali and Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad, had met with Selangor menteri besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim following the Utusan report.

“The menteri besar has clarified that there was no move against azans. I do not know how that issue has arisen,” said Saari when contacted earlier.

When reached for a response, Mohd Khir declined comment.

Dr M blames Pak Lah for rising racism among Malays

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today blamed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for letting racial tensions mount to the point where younger Malays are becoming more racial.

"I believe racist sentiments among Malays and non-Malays are rising. If it flares up the stability of this country may be affected permanently. We may see political wrangling of the kind we see in several other countries. In the process the economy of this country would be destroyed," he said.

Dr Mahathir said that although Abdullah tried to placate everyone by splashing out funds and projects, no one believed him because they never materialised.

"The fact is that nobody believes him or trusts him. No one has been placated."

Dr Mahathir's solution?

"Right thinking people must make their rejection of Datuk Seri Abdullah's leadership heard. If we don't then whatever racial harmony that exists would be eroded and will destroy this beloved country.

We are observing empirically how certain leaders are fanning and inciting racial hatred. They are desperate to see that this nation of ours must be dragged into another racial clash. They will say anything and do anything to make sure that the Malays hate the Chinese and the Chinese feared the Malays.

Even our Armed Forces Chief General Abdul Aziz Zainal had expressed his worries and concern.

Prime Minister Pak Lah also admitted the same concern. "The racial situation in our country looks like it is showing signs of strain and increasing tensions among races," Pak Lah said.

Deputy police chief Ismail Omar also sounded a warning yesterday, saying that racially charged statements had triggered a dangerous rash of inflammatory messages on Internet blogs and SMS text messages.

"I am issuing a stern warning to all quarters to refrain from making statements on sensitive issues via the various media," Deputy IGP said.

It seems it is inevitable that we may have to go through this turmoil. Why are these conspirators aren't afraid of Allah's displeasure? This is the month of Ramadan.

The Prophet said: "If one does not give up speaking falsehood and acting by it, Allah does not require him to give up eating and drinking." (Bukhari)

Fasting is a means for performing real worship. Real worship means desisting from violating the law of Allah. The Prophet had directed the Muslims, while fasting, ought to do more good works and ardently desire to perform acts of kindness, compassion and sympathy. Instead some of them preferred to incite hatred and animosity.

Government must act to prevent chaos

KUALA LUMPUR Sept 9 — Malaysia’s Defence Forces Chief Jen Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Zainal has asked the government to take stern action against those who bring up racial issues.

This is because such issues can bring about chaos to the country.

The General's remarks comes amid rising tensions brought about by the controversial comments about the Chinese in Malaysia which was made by Bukit Bendera Umno division chief Datuk Ahmad Ismail.

Abdul Aziz's is considered unusual because it is rare for Malaysian military officials to comment on civilian issues.

Sarawak DCM sound the warnings

Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam warned that Sarawak, with 30 MPs in Parliament are observing the current political upheavals in the peninsular and Sabah and is gravely concerned.

“All this politicking is leading us nowhere. This is not reaping any benefit for the rakyat.

“Are all these going to help bring down the price of fuel and food? Obviously, all is not well, even within the Barisan. Barisan needs to change. It must urgently revitalise itself.

“If we don’t change, the people will change us. Barisan needs to change or else it will be changed,” Chan told reporters here yesterday.

Dr Chan noted that the people of Sarawak were worried that the rights of certain section of the population were being questioned.

He said the recent incident in which an Umno leader referred the Chinese as migrants who do not deserve rights was very regrettable.

“Our rights as Malaysians have been guaranteed by the Constitution.

“We have the right to defend these rights. This sort of thing (the questioning of citizens’ rights) should not be happening in our country anymore.

“Look at the United States. Right now, an African American (Barack Obama) is on the verge of becoming president,” he said.

MCA secretary-general Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan said the Chinese gained citizenship by sacrificing their lives for the country.

Some 300,000 Chinese died defending the country during the Japanese Occupation in the 1940s, he said.

“That was about 20% of the population then. They had joined the Anti-Japanese Army to fight the invasion when the British left us helpless.

“And this was what made the British give us citizenship. It wasn’t gained without any sacrifice or contribution on our part.

“Our citizenship had been exchanged with our courage, blood, sweat and tears for the country,” he said after opening the Perak Wanita MCA convention here yesterday.

Ong was responding to remarks made by Bukit Bendara Umno division head Datuk Ahmad Ismail on the Chinese during the Permatang Pauh by-election.

Calling Ahmad irresponsible and naïve for making the remarks, Ong said the issue should be put to a rest for the sake of racial harmony and unity among the people.

“We are all Malaysians. We need to stand united instead of being suspicious of one another,” he said.

On Ahmad’s demand that Gerakan acting president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon and Chinese community leaders apologise to him, Ong said:

“It is not about who should apologise or who should withdraw from Barisan Nasional but about respecting each other’s rights.”

Selangor Wanita MCA chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun said Ahmad’s remark damaged racial relationships and the MCA would have to review its ties in Barisan.

Outgoing Perak Youth chief Datuk Tan Chin Meng proposed that the MCA leave Barisan if Ahmad refused to apologise for his statements.

“The younger generation of Malaysians are born here. What Ahmad said was degrading to the younger generation,” he added.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Non-Malays in this country are Umno’s partners whose rights and interests will be safeguarded.

He said Umno has never regarded the Chinese in this country as “pendatang” (immigrants), and as the main pillar in Barisan Nasional, Umno’s policy is clear that the party accepts non-Malays as partners in nation-building .

Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said racial and religious polarisation is getting worse and this is very unhealthy.

"Everyone should stop before we get divided even more,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bukit Bendera Umno division chief Ahmad Ismail has claimed that his decision not to apologise for his racially inflammatory remarks has received “tremendous support” from Malay-Muslim groups.

Ahmad said those who supported him consist of professionals, top academicians, politicians, civil movements, relatives and friends.

"I am surprised with the unexpected overwhelming support I had received from Malay-Muslims across the country.

“It is going to be a major issue now,” cautioned Ahmad.

Ahmad thinks he wants this issue to be a major issue.

I don't think the people feared him and his coterie. The people have had enough of the bullying, the blame game and then the interposing of the weaker party by making them the culprit. At the back of all these rhetorical conduct he and his coterie were the strategic partners with some Chinese businessmen in pillaging the nation's coffers via the doctrines of NEP and Malay privileges. The Malays in Umno cannot live without the Chinese businessmen - one party gets the projects in the name of Malay privilege, the other party pays commissions and upfront monies to buy the project - it was win-win; for them! The nation was pilfered and pillaged; who cares? Only the ordinary Malays suffers; yet, they are coyed into mystic thoughts. 50 years passed, they lament; another 50 years will pass too; and they would remain lamenting.

SEPT 7 — Once again, Umno president Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi has shown that he is unable to keep in check his party politicians.

If racial tensions have risen in the past few weeks, the blame should lay squarely with him because he is the good man who did nothing while Datuk Ahmad Ismail postured and capitulated himself from an unknown regional politician to the national stage by standing up to his party president.

But it is not just Umno politicians he has failed to keep in line.

He also allowed anger to mount among Chinese parties in the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, to the stage where both the MCA and Gerakan are facing pressure from within to pull out of BN.

Now he is asking everyone to cool it. He says it is the collective responsibility of all Malaysians to preserve racial harmony.

But that is not likely to end the debate.

The man who says he is the prime minister of all Malaysians is finding it difficult now to really be one.

He is now stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Stuck between the pressure of staying in power in Umno, and the reality that most non-Malays in this country perceive Umno to be racist.

When Ahmad, the Bukit Bendera Umno chief, said that Chinese were squatters in this country, it merely reinforced the view among the non-Malays of the feeling that Umno is racist.

Regardless of the facts, that is the perception among many non-Malays.

That is why so many voted against the BN coalition. They abandoned support for MCA, Gerakan, and MIC and placed their faith in the hands of the opposition Pakatan Rakyat (PR), which while trying to portray a multiracial front, is also a Malay dominated front.

Chinese, Indian and other non-Malay voters would rather place their faith in an alliance which included PAS, a party whose avowed mission is to form an Islamic theocracy, than in an Umno-led BN.

Perhaps what Abdullah should consider is that significant number of Malays are also choosing to vote for PR parties, including the DAP, a party whose secular aims include the removal of affirmative action for Malays.

The significant Malay support for the opposition could perhaps explain why race relations among ordinary Malaysians is still relatively comfortable.

After all, few took the bait when students from UiTM rallied against a proposal from the Selangor Mentri Besar for their university to be open to non-Malays.

And so far, the Chinese squatter debate has been confined to a fierce quarrel between Umno, MCA and Gerakan.

Even former Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohamad realised his mistake when he initially appeared to support Ahmad's position in refusing to apologise. He must have read some of the responses on his blog from Malays who expressed disappointment with him.

The next day Dr Mahathir wrote that what he meant was that Umno leaders should not apologise on Ahmad's behalf. Dr Mahathir said that he did not like what Ahmad said and that the politician should face action.

Ultimately, Abdullah has made Ahmad a hero for all those who want him to resign earlier than later as Prime Minister.

He has also made it very difficult for BN to start the difficult task of regaining the votes they have lost to the Pakatan Rakyat.

Caliph Umar on his deathbed said:

"I advise my successor to comply with the covenant made with those under the protection of the prophet, protect them from those who prosecute them and do not impose burden more than they can bear."

Defiant Ahmad demands apology

Penang Umno backs Ahmad, snubs Pak Lah

Backed by all 13 Umno divisions from Penang, the embattled Bukit Bendera Umno division chief Ahmad Ismail today fervently defended his stand not to apologise for his alleged racist remarks against the Chinese community.

Instead of apologising, the local Umno strongman today accused vernacular daily Sin Chiew Daily and its journalist for triggering the controversy by reporting his speech.

“The newspaper and reporter were the ones who should apologise to me, my family, my friends, Umno and all Malaysians for misrepresenting the facts and wrongly reporting my statements,” Ahmad Ismail said.

“What I said was a statement of facts which no one can refute," Ahmad defended his racist remarks.

“So it’s not wrong if I were to mention those historical facts in public,” he said.

“It is the Chinese leaders who are causing this controversy, not me. What’s wrong if a Malay leader touched, on or defended, Malay rights?” asked Ahmad.

Penang opposition leader Datuk Azhar Ibrahim blasted the Sin Chew Daily journalist saying that “the reporter and the newspaper should be held responsible for inciting racial hatred and conflict”.

"What was written may lead to a racial riot. If such a thing happens, he is the first person that should be shot," Azhar said to loud cheers from Umno supporters who packed the meeting room at Menara Umno here. (Read it here: Penang opposition leader: Reporter should be shot )


Ahmad Ismail slammed Gerakan Koh Tsu Koon as a “great liar and opportunist”, and said Gerakan can always “get out from Barisan Nasional”.

Bukit Mertajam division chief Musa Syeikh Fadzir hit out at the Umno top leadership for apologising on behalf of the party without checking the facts with Ahmad.

“The national leadership can have its own stand, but Penang divisional leaders have theirs.

“We fully back Ahmad on this issue,” Musa told journalists, rejecting outright Najib's apologetic gesture.

But the most intimidating threat came from former Bayan Lepas assemblyperson Mohd Zain, who warned “non-Malays to be extra careful with their deeds and words”.

“Don’t disturb and push the Malays too much. Don’t think we are quiet.

“We can retaliate very aggressively,” he thumped home amidst applause from supporters.

At the same time, Ahmad argued that he was neither a racist nor anti-Chinese.

I have to pray; I am fearful. I thought these Malays in Umno are Muslims and believeth in the Quran and feared Allah. But from the statement they made yesterday and cited above, it tends towards the behavior of Satan - Iblis!

They said: "Don't disturb us and push us too much. Don't think we are quiet.'

Oh shit! Did we disturb them or did they disturb us and we had been quiet? We were threatened and they claim we were the ones threatening them! What sort of rational thinking were these guys? They were Muslims and they acknowledged the Quran is the word of Allah; but they talk as if the Quran is re-written in Satanic language? Did they fear Allah? or they prefer to instil fear in others? They were threatening! Don't you think what we read and heard from these guys caused us much anxieties and paranoia? We are under duress and under apprehension - this is an act of putting people in fear of violence and they should know that their course of conduct will cause the others so to fear on each of those occasions.

We are nailed to the wall! What do we do? Maybe the Muslim leaders from PAS, the true Islamic believers, will come to aid and relieve the oppressed; they believeth in Allah and feared God and would defend the oppressed; would they?.

Umno apologises over racist remark

"We apologise, Umno apologises although it is not our statement but it is a statement made by one of our division leaders. It is totally unwarranted and does not reflect the position and the attitude of Umno or the leadership of Umno. We regret it very much," Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is also Umno deputy president, said

Speaking to reporters after launching the Chery Multi Purpose Vehicle here, Najib said the Umno supreme council would also decide at its next meeting on the "appropriate action" to be taken against the division leader.

"The statement is his personal statement and is not the stand of Umno and the Government. We do not regard Malaysian citizens of Chinese, Indian or other descent as 'passengers'.

"They are Malaysian citizens who have full rights and we will definitely safeguard their interests and their dignity and I describe the statement as something that Umno and the Government very much regret," he said. - Bernama

Najib's word is assuring and the Chinese must accept in with appreciation. Credit must be given where credit is due. The choice of words used by Najib is simply fair, reasonable and assuring. Let's be a united Malaysian Incorporated; let's prosper each other and share our love and goodwill.

Tan Sri Annuar Musa, said the remarks by Ahmad Ismail were similar to the statements by several Gerakan leaders who had wanted Gerakan to leave the BN.

We refer to the above whereby we act for Y.B. Karpal Singh, MP for Bukit Gelugor and Chairman of the Democratic Action Party, a component party of the Pakatan Rakyat, who has handed us a copy of your newspaper dated 25.08.2008 which carries the following libellous words in the article under the heading “DAP diingati jangan bakar perasaan Melayu”:-

It is sad for all Malaysians that we have a newspaper who would sell their souls and betray their own conscience in order to destroy the national aspiration, the aspiration that our Prime Minister Abdullah propagated in the Merdeka message:

A united people? That's not what Utusan Malaysia is propagating as evidenced above?That's false accusations which could incite hatred. I had been observing Utusan news for years and we know what is the political motivations of those writers within. It's sad that our Prime Minister had kept a blind eye on such bigotry. It is sad that MCMC and Information Minister had also kept a blind eye and ears to such bigotry. Yet, we heard of so many others who were charged for sedition and ISA-ed for similar propagations.

National unity? Dear PM, talking about it isn't sufficient; actions and behaviors must be exemplary.

Umno Bukit Bendera: Chinese are squatters

MCA Youth today slammed Umno division chief Ahmad Ismail for allegedly making racist remarks against the minority community during the recent Permatang Pauh by-election campaign.

Ahmad, the Bukit Bendera Umno division head, had allegedly said Chinese were "squatters" in the country, who were both selfish and unjust, at a ceramah on Aug 24 in the Permatang Pauh by-election contest between Arif Shah and Anwar Ibrahim.

MCA Youth leader Hang Cheng Peng demanded an immediate apology and explanation from Ahmad.

Former deputy home affairs minister Tan Chai Ho attributed Ahmad’s comments to extremism and narrow mindedness.

“Some people are very extreme and narrow minded. Instead of forging stronger relationships, they are splitting unity. I hope this is the last time we hear such things.”

Deputy Education Minister Dr Wee Ka Siong warned that MCA Youth would “fight until the end” against any party which makes irresponsible statements in the future, including against other ethnic groups.

Penang Gerakan Youth leader Khaw Veon Szu said Ahmad’s actions proved that certain BN leaders had not learnt from the coalition’s electoral setbacks during the March 8 general election.

“They have shown no remorse and are unwilling to change their bad traits,” Khaw said, adding that any attempts to win back support for BN would be futile until this was addressed.

Ahmad Ismail view is generally shared by most of Umno members and leaders, and include people such as the vice-chancellor Dr Ibrahim Abu Shah of UiTM, as well as many others such as Khairy, Rahim Thamby Chik, Mohd Ali Rustam, Ibrahim Ali, Badruddin, Mohd Anis, Abdul Aziz Sheikh Fadzir, Hashim Suboh, etc. What he said is a psychological outpouring of his thoughts deep within and we can observed that the others had espoused the same thoughts.

The mere suppression of thoughts would not alleviate the calcified and discriminative ideological mindset of the coterie.

50 years after Merdeka, this is what the nation had achieved. Our forefathers had cooperated and trusted Umno and agreed to support them in the effort to gain independence from the British so that Umno can take control of the sovereignty of the nation and .help build a Malaysia for Malaysians, establishing a just and equitable government of the people, by the people, and for the people. But, observing the reality, we are only left to ponder whether we would had been better off under the British colonialism. But such thoughts are irrelevant and are non-beneficial to any. What's left is to learn to take care of your self and learned the value of trust. The day will surely arrived when globalization sinks the dishonest dominant into the abyss and incompetence and the dunce received its due reward.
