PM: Malays must look beyond protectionism

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak urged Malay entrepreneurs to rely on their own ability in order to be have dignity and be respected.

“Don't just talk about rights. What is more important is what are we doing to do to increase our wealth” Najib said when officially opening the newly-formed United Malay Economic Action Council (MTEM) in Serdang last night.

This is the second time in three days that the premier had spoken on the need to move away from preferential treatment for the Malay business class.

On Monday, the Najib told the Khazanah Megatrends Forum that bumiputera quotas will be done away with in the future in order to increase competition.

“We never took from other people. We created new projects in order for the people to feel that we did not take away the rights of others, so that there is fair distribution,” he said.

“We must change because our environment has changed. If (you) depend on (government) protection, it cannot guarantee our future,” he said.

In the Kedah case, Ungku Aznan Ungku Ismail, the school principal for SMK Bukit Selambau in Sungai Petani, caused a national outcry when he allegedly uttered racial slurs to his non-Malay students.

Ungku Aznan had allegedly publicly told several Chinese students to go back to China for “behaving disrespectfully” when they were seen having breakfast in the school canteen during the Ramadan fasting month.

Hari Raya Message

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has called on Muslims and Malaysians to strengthen harmony and break down their prejudices for the sake of the future generation.

"Let's make use of occasions like this to restore and strengthen relations among Muslims and Malaysians," he said in his Hari Raya Aidilfitri message.

Najib said: "Unfortunately, there are certain quarters who peddle hatred and try to deny this. They try to sow seeds of ungratefulness in the minds of their people in their attempt to achieve their narrow objectives."

"Let's break down the walls of prejudice, hatred and apathy for the sake of our children's future."

He called on Muslims in Malaysia to carry the torch of unity and progress, saying that as the community which formed the majority, they not only had the rights, but more importantly, the responsibilities to shoulder.

Najib said Muslims in Malaysia had many reasons to be grateful, as they were living in a peaceful and prosperous country at a time when Muslims around the world were facing oppression, either politically or economically, or due to war.

Najib hails Utusan Malaysia

Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak hailed the Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia today for its role in representing the absolute interest of the Malays, but however, he also urged the newspaper to also voice out the rights of all Malaysians.

“Utusan is known for its trademark and its trademark is to voice the desire of the people, especially the Malay community,” he said in his speech during a breaking of fast function at Sri Utusan Printing Complex here.

However Datuk Seri Najib Razak warned that the media must not only report ethically but also responsibly.

“I hope that we will not only voice the rights of only the Malay community but for the other races as well. When we want to defend rights (of a community), we must also discuss about responsibility,” he said.

He also urged the media to play an important role to shape the nation into 1 Malaysia.

“Media has the responsibility to help in the journey travelled by Malaysia.

The journey which seeks common understanding, openness in thinking. The journey which will also test our struggle.

“If in this journey, we bring chaos and sentiments without looking at the bigger perspective then the journey will go through many difficulties,” he said.

Utusan Malaysia has been criticized for ratcheting up racial tensions.

The Umno-owned newspaper was responsible for running daily stories criticizing DAP as anti-Islam and implying Anwar Ibrahim as a Malay Traitor. It also publish many articles which we observe could provoke racial paranoia and raise racial tensions among the various communities.

Ku Li: BN power-sharing model broken, needs new one

The ruling Barisan Nasional’s racial power-sharing model is broken with the races now polarised, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said.

“The racial power-sharing model now practised by Barisan is broken. It takes more honesty than we are used to in public life to observe that this is not a temporary but a terminal crisis. An old order is ending,” Tengku Razaleigh told the Kelab Umno Australia at the Melbourne University.

We are in a transition full of perils and possibilities,” the Kelantan prince said in a copy of the speech sent to The Malaysian Insider.

The coalition has to wake up to the fact that it no longer worked.

“It was designed as an interim work-around, an early stage on the way to ‘a more perfect union’ and not as the desired end-state. Over the years, however, we have put up barricades around our system as if it were a fore-ordained and permanent ideal.

“In doing so, we have turned a half-way house into our destination, as if we must forever remain a racially divided and racially governed society,” said Ku Li.

Tengku Razaleigh said the power-sharing model in Malaysia was an elite style of government justified by the virtue and competence of natural leaders of the communities.

“It does not work when political parties are led by the ignorant and the corrupt who have no standing in the communities they claim to represent,” he said bluntly, saying the country now has top-down rule and power had become increasingly unaccountable with Umno beholden to the executive.

“Our decades under highly-centralised government undermined our power-sharing formula, just as it undermined key institutions such as the judiciary, the police and the rule of law.

“Our major institutions have survived in appearance while their substance has eroded. Seen in this light, the election results of March 8, which saw the Barisan Nasional handed its worst defeat since 1969, was just the beginning of the collapse of a structure which has long been hollowed out,” Ku Li said.

“We need a new beginning to racial relations in Malaysia, and you must pioneer that beginning. We need to re-design race relations in Malaysia, and you must be the architects and builders of that design,” he told his audience.

“Begin with our common humanity. Respect for our common humanity must override all lesser affiliations, including race,” he said, noting one of Islam’s most powerful contributions to human civilisation has been its insistence on the equality of all human beings.

“Islam tolerates no notions of racial superiority or inferiority. All human beings are equal before God. That same principle of equality is absolutely fundamental to democracy, and democracy is a foundational principle of our Constitution.

“Political parties based on race or religion must never be allowed to do or say anything contrary to justice and equality,” he added.

Bucking the trend in his party that espouses Malay supremacy, Tengku Razaleigh said Malaysians must anchor themselves in the constitution and restore its primacy as it establishes the equality of citizenship.

“It gives us the framework of law and order within which we become a nation. It establishes the primacy of the rule of law, the sovereignty of Parliament, the independence of the judiciary and civil service and of our law enforcement agencies. These are the institutions which guarantee the freedom and sovereignty of the people,” he added.

Speaking on race, he noted that while it united people in a common feeling, it can also divide and said that Malaysians are not just diverse in race but diverse in different ways, including location, class, social status, occupation, language and politics.

“We would be terribly impoverished as persons if our identity was given ahead of time and once and for all, merely by our membership of a fixed racial category.

He railed against the politics of race saying it will always divide, “and the ultimate solution to intra-racial problems it leads us to is, in the end, violence.”

“It is easy to identify the practitioners of this kind of racial politics. They will rely on veiled threats of communal violence even as they take part in democratic politics,” he added.

“It is time to embrace this real diversity in our political and personal lives. Our racial identities are not silos in a cornfield, forever separate, encased in steel, but trees in our rainforest: standing distinct but inexplicable without each other and constantly co-evolving,” he said.

“Let us have the sense of perspective to see our ethnic identities against these cornerstone principles of religion and ethics, and let us now educate our young, apprentice our youth, and conduct ourselves according to these principles.

“And then let us have a new beginning for Malaysia,” he said when ending his speech.

Najib explains why NEP failed

Najib: Malaysia's closed service sector was similar to Myanmar

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said that, to date, some RM54bil in shares were allocated to bumiputras but only RM2.4bil still remained in their hands.

He explained that among the reasons for the mass sell-out include poor holding power, not serious about holding the shares, high gearing cost especially involving financing or not being able to take part in the running of the company as they did not have the 30% stake.

He pointed that those who received shares were not ordinary folk but mostly influential people who sat in the front rows at functions such as Tan Sris and Datuk Seris.

“This is why Bumiputra equity has been at only 18.9% for the past 19 years,” he said, adding that it was “madness” to continue with the same policy hoping that the outcome would change for better.

“The end result is that we have to change and one way is to have Equinas Nasional Bhd (Ekuinas), a private equity fund to help bumiputras,” he said, adding that he wanted bumiputra entrepreneurs who were not only champions locally but also regionally and internationally.

Besides this, Najib also talked about the liberalisation of the services sector, changes to Umno, the abolishing of teaching science and mathematics in English and his One Malaysia concept and Umno’s preparedness for the next general election.

On the liberasation, he added that it was important as Malaysia’s closed services sector was similar to Myanmar.

“We invest in other countries but we do not allow others to invest here,” he said, adding that Indonesia, Cambodia and Thailand had opened up their services sector.

Najib & the Bumi Equity paradox

Datuk Seri Najib Razak today freed the country's services sector by ending the 30 percent Bumiputera equity rule.

The Prime Minister, who is also the finance minister, promised further liberalisation, saying that he would announce details of the liberalisation of the financial sector next week.

I hope Najib knows what he is doing. The consequence of this decision will impair on the "Dream NEP" and cause the 30% equity acquisition policy to falter.

Someday, the Umnos and the cronic NGOs are going to blame eveyone else on this policy and cry-jihad with pendatangs who become rich for whatsoever reasons, related and unrelated to the policy change.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the significance of Hari Raya Aidiladha lies in the fact that if Muslims seek to progress and succeed in their endeavours, spiritually and materially, it would not come without sacrifice.

Razak swears???

Abdul Razak Baginda insisted and maintained repeatedly, that, it is beyond any reasonable doubt, beyond any imagination, beyond any probability and beyond any intelligible comprehension, that Najib Abdul Razak and Rosmah can ever be involved in the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder case.

The only truth is that, it was the bloggers, who were spreading lies over the matter . As such, he pleads to the public to be apprehensive of what they read in blogs.

Zaki: a man that re-form PM/DPM

Prime Minister Abdullah told a story today:

Zaki has already initiated reforms - he has reformed the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister - Top-Down reformation.

Immediately after taking his oath as Chief Justice, he immediately whispered to the prime minister of his needs and wants:

(1) He wants more judges, lawyers;
(2) He wants more courts in as many areas and districts and province; and
(3) He wants more money money too.

The first two, he gets immediate approval from the PM there-and -then; the third, the PM told him he is no more the Finance Minister and he will himself need to whisper to the Finance Minister Najib who is also the Deputy Prime Minister.

Abdullah then whispered to his deputy to seek his approval for more money for Zaki. Najib smiled at him: "If the PM wants money, he will get it; If the PM says Yes, I will do it" [emphasis added]

It was clear: you scratch my back I scratch yours; you scratch my head, I scratch your back. But if you scratch the lice, the louses sucks as they are anthropods.

So, Zaki, you are lucky; you will get your money.

Najib accepts Malaysiakini's apology over Manifesto

Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today said he accepted Malaysiakini's apology with regards to a report on a manifesto from a 'support group' which was wrongly attributed to him.

Najib also praised journalist Wong Choon Mei - who had written the report - as having shown "high values of professionalism" in claiming responsibility for the error. Wong had resigned yesterday.

Speaking to reporters at the Parliament lobby, Najib said he was satisfied with the apology issued by the news portal.

"I accept the apology or the decision to seek an apology by the editor of Malaysiakini on the publishing of the completely untrue manifesto that I (purportedly) issued.

"Secondly, I want to state that the journalist who resigned over the said article has shown high values of professionalism as she has demonstrated her responsibility (and) accountability for the story which is not at all true," he said.

"The question is the guilty quarters - the real culprits - behind the report are still hiding and we still do not know who is responsible for the said story,"Najib said.

Najib: Be fair to all races

Muslims must be fair to all races in accordance with the teachings of Islam, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

He said even in the olden days, Muslims were taught to protect the rights of others and treat them with all fairness.

“Islam means peaceful and prosperous. It is suitable for all ages and people of any race in this world.

“As such, in this holy month of Ramadan, we must continue to do more good and charitable deeds to gain merits worldly and thereafter,” he said Saturday in his speech after presenting aid to the poor and single mothers in Kampung Padang Polo mosque here.

Datuk Seri Najib Razak yesterday pledged he would carry out his responsibilities as an Umno member, elected representative and deputy prime minister to the letter, irrespective of the challenges that come his way.

Najib also said that he would not shy away from helping anyone who sought his help.

"Whether they are government or opposition leaders, all should follow the laws."

He said the government had the option of imposing censorship instead of leaving it to the people to evaluate.

However, he said, this would lead to the belief that the government was not democratic nor open.

"Therefore, it is better for the people to be left to decide on the various issues."

On whether the issue would affect Umno, he said: "Umno members understand what is happening.

DIRTY: Politics or Politicians?

Najib admit that politics are dirty.

"I have to accept the fact that politics in this country has become dirty. There are certain quarters willing to do anything to achieve their aims."

We have to agree to his statement, holistically.

There can be no doubt about the dirtiness of our politics;

but it must also mean that the players who are themselves politicians must be dirty in order that politics can be dirty.

However, politics in itself cannot be dirty without money, damned monies, a lot of monies, and in order to fund the players of the dirty games the aspirers must be rich enough to pay the actors, the supporting casts and the crews and directors.


Meanwhile, in response to Balasubramaniam's withdrawal of the 1st Statutory Declaration and the subsequent submission of the 2nd SD, Najib said Balasubramaniam has no credibility.

I have to agree with Najib; it is clear that those who made the SD must be sure of what they wrote, the content must be truthful and factual; if at all it contains hearsay he must validate it and ensure that what is perceived and heard of must be the pure content without additives.

Najib admitted he had meeting with Saiful

Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today admitted that he met Saiful Bukhari Azlan a few days before the latter lodged a police report against Anwar Ibrahim for alleged sodomy.

The admission by the deputy premier today was a shocker as previously he had acknowledged Saiful meeting his special officer three months ago to seek government scholarship.

At the time, he did not disclose about this personal meeting with Saiful.

"There are two elements. He (Saiful) came to the office to seek help for scholarship and he only met with my special officer.

"He (also) came to my house because he needed help because he was so traumatised, so that was it.

"He just came for help, that's all and he never met me when he came to my office," said the deputy premier.

Najib revealed the meeting when asked by reporters on his views behind Anwar's continuous attacks against him.

"I don't know, maybe he (Anwar) thinks I am the one behind the guy (Saiful). Actually there is no conspiracy, he came and saw me to complain that he had been sodomised by Anwar," said Najib.

Najib added he accepted the meeting with Saiful in his capacity as a government leader and the young man as a Malaysian citizen.

With his ‘revelation', Najib was pressed by reporters for more details on their meeting, including whether he believed the claims made by Saiful on the alleged sodomy.

In this, Najib said: "I was sceptical, I was not sure whether there was any basis or whether it was genuine or whatever it was. I was worried, so I said ‘look, it's up to you (to decide on the next course of action)."

But he also added that Saiful "looks genuine".

"I don't dare to say. He looks genuine as he was in fear, his hands were seram sejuk (cold) but I dare not draw a conclusion, I advised him that 'you decide for yourself'," said Najib.

DPM 's office & Scholarship application conundrum

Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today strongly dismissed claims that he was involved in a conspiracy to ruin PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim's political career.

"I am not behind this. The most important thing (now) is whether the act (sodomy) took place. That is for the police to establish," he told a press conference at the Parliament lobby today.

Najib today denied that Saiful was an undercover agent for him at Anwar's office. He said that photo was taken was taken when the 23-year-old Saiful came to his office three months ago.

"It was taken three months ago when he came to seek a government scholarship to pursue his studies as he (Saiful) is a student leader," explained Najib.

If Saiful who has a CGPA of 0.8 needs scholarship, he should normally apply to PSD which is the appropriate body; he could seek someone who had strong connection with ministers to get it through the back door.
