Extract Report from New Straits Time, 5th Oct 2004
She may still be alive today if only the Pekan Hospital has had a supply of anti-vernom vaccine.
When bride-to-be Arni Syuhada Salleh was rushed to hospital after being bitten by a king cobra on Friday (1st Oct), she could not be treated.
Deputy Health Minister Datuk Dr. latiff Ahmad said:
“I am very disappointed that it could happen. These anti-vernom vaccines should be available at all hospitals.”
He said he could not accept any excuse.
“I cannot accept the excuse that they ran out of vaccine or the expiry date was over.”
The vaccine was produced in Perlis. Dr. Latiff said the hospital was even unaware of the type of snake that bit the 23-year-old. Malaysia had only 3 spicies of venomous snakes on land, and hospitals are supposed to have vaccines for all three snakes. There were tqo types of toxins in snakes, one that leads to gangrene and another that coagulates blood.
