COPS are more discipline NOW!

The level of discipline among policemen has improved tremendously under the present leadership. Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Noh Omar said the force, under Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Bakri Omar, was more committed than ever to fighting corruption and abuse of power.

“I have received positive feedback from the public on the increased confidence they have in the police. The number of complaints against the police has also gone down significantly.”

“In fact, the police themselves had initiated measures even before the Report of the Royal Commission to Enhance the Operation and Management of the Royal Malaysia Police was completed,” he told reporters after opening the 25th annual general meeting of the Malaysian Ex-Policemen's Association Jelebu branch here yesterday.

Citing an example, Noh said he had received several complaints about the police and referred them personally to the IGP. “He was prompt and took stern action against those involved,” he said, adding that no one was above the law.

Noh, however, added that it was impossible to maintain a close watch over every one of the 90,000 police personnel nationwide. “Definitely, there are some black sheep in the force. It would be most regrettable if they choose to continue committing irresponsible acts detrimental to the image of the entire force,” he said.

From my experience, last few days, I had to go to the police station to solve a problem for a friend of mine, Ah Fatt. He was called in by a police corporal to report to the station bacause his girlfriend had reported that Ah Fatt threatened her during a phone call (Ah Fatt wanted to take back his watches which he left in her house and she won't let him in and he threaten to break the door).

I went in to the reception counter, gave the name of my friend and asked the police officer there who do I see and talk to regarding this matter. I was told to see an Inspector S. When I got to the room of the inspector, I saw this inspector just walked in and I introduced myself and told him I need his advice and information. This officer went straight to another room where there is a sofa set and lay flat saying he was tired. I waited! Ten minutes later, he went to his room, closed it and probably changed his clothings. In another 20 minutes time, I was allowed to go in. I was informed that he was not the officer in-charge of this case, and he told me to see Sergeant Zakaria at fourth floor. I went there and found this sergeant. This Zakaria is an excellent officer. I told him my problem and that I was taken for a merry-go-round ride to see this and that officers and none is the right man. He was so helpful and he told me this is common things that happens. He called the reception and confirmed that it is one Inspector Az and I thank him and went to the see Mr. Right. The rest, I reserve my comments ....

The hypothesis posed: "The level of discipline among policemen has improved tremendously"

Has it or has it been reinvented and cosmetically redesign with a new outlook but the same culture and practices?

It can be seen that Officers are now more careful especially with this New IGP. They are damn innovative and creative. Michael Soosai's story of officers collaborating with gangsters should be analyse and studied. I saw similar things with my own eyes. It was an instance where two person were quarreling and fought in a food court; one guy called his back-up rascal members as reinforcements and the other guy got his team of "officers" as back-up. The officers came in a van and sit round his friend so that the other group had to back off. These officers should have interrogated them both, but did not. I was perplex but I was told, this is very common and part of our culture. My friend told me, there are two types of gangsters, one gang has rascal followers, the other type has police "protection". I told my friend I don't understand! I still don't understand.

How many of these Sergeant Zakaria are there in the police force? This man is an adorable example of a good and caring officers. I went round to so many of them; none had impressed me except this one man - Zakaria. I just wonder, why can't Bukit Aman and the IGP mould more of them to be like Zakaria ... unfortunately, I believe this Zakaria will be retiring soon .... we will lose one good and honest officer who serves the public with passion and love; and he remains poor from thereon!
