Enough of Slogan Shouting

Sarawak Chief Minister, Pehin Sri Dr. Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud told more than 1,400 PBB delegates and the State Coalition partners who are attending the 62nd General Assembly that "Slogan shouting is enough; Get on with the actions."

With challenges ahead greater than before, Sarawak leaders and members must put their acts together and stay focused on the task they had to shoulder. It is the challenge of capacity building.

"Let us move away from slogan shouting and over indulgence in resolutions or Agendas, and instead be more affirmative about getting things done and moving forward with greater initiative," Taib Mahmud said.

"We (Bumiputera) are no longer object of charity as we are capable of setting up partnership and advancing."

"Of importance to Bumiputeras is to soldier on in a changing and competitive environment and the need to stay focused, initiate profitability, uphold discipline and integrity, and operate in an ever expanding collaborative framework."

Taib Mahmud singled out globalization as the biggest challenge and that there was no running away of it. It is necessary to built programmes that would imbue in Bumiputera intellectual strength, strong-sense of discipline, confidence and the courage to see beyong the familiar territory.

"We will be competing not among ourselves, but against the big players from develop countries," said the Chief Minister.

Sarawak conglomerate Cahya Mata Sarawak (CMS) subsidiary CMS Works International Ltd had entered into a joint-venture partnership with China Yunnan Highway & Bridge Construction Group Co. Ltd and the alliance had signed an MoU with Yunan province Communications Department to construct two expressways in Yunnan Province, China. The project involve the construction of the 75km Kunming North-West Ring Expressway and the 72km Kunming-Wuding Expressway which had a total contract value estimated at RM5.12 billion. The MoU was signed by CMS Group Chairman Dato Sri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Taib and Director-general of Yunnan Provincial Communications Department, Yang Guang Cheng and Chairman of Board of China Yunnan Highway & Bridge Construction Group Co Ltd, Deng Xiao-Shun.

It just goes to show how effective and forward-moving the Sarawak government and it's State corporations are moving speedily into the global marketplace and stringing alliances with strategic business partners in order to stay relevant and ensure sustainable business growth.

I just wonder why our national system and UMNO in particular, are incapable to see things in similar perspective. The words of Taib Mahmud are clear, unambiguous, and literal; and I hope the political leaders in Semenanjung are not living behind a smoke screen.
