The Sad Tale of a Kelantanese Bride

She was only 16 and he was 24, when she fell in love with him. They both were from Kelantan.

They decided to get married on November 7, 2005. She had to quit schooling to be his wife.

On the wedding night, his relatives called to tell him that his mother was sick. He rushed home, like any filial son would. It was a ploy and he was locked in a room.

Three days later, he escaped and returned to his wife. However, their happiness being together did not last, for 3 weeks later, on Nov 26, they were on a motorcycle in Kampung Banggol Ara when a group forced them to stop. Two men, allegedly Suhaidi’s brothers, grabbed him and drove off.

She lodged a police report the next day.

Despite the pain of separation, Nurul Hidayah Ismail, 16, waited for him to return. Days passed and she had no news.

Yesterday, the news came. She was not ready for the news: that her husband, Suhaidi Amaidin, 24, made the declaration at his family’s home in Kampung Banggol Ara about 10.30pm on Dec 17 to pronounce the talak (declaration of divorce. It was done not in accordance with the Muslim's faith - without the Syariah Court’s consent.

He did not give a reason for his action. She seek justice at the Syariah Court.

Suhaidi, was summoned to the court to confirm that he had divorced Nurul Hidayah with talak tiga (a final declaration of divorce with no recourse for reconciliation).

At the court, Nurul Hidayah, could not hold back her tears when Suhaidi pronounced his desire to divorce. Mohd Hazid, the judge, then legitimised the divorce.

She could not stop it and can only apply for interim maintenance of RM300 a month, of which he was only prepared to offer RM150 a month.

The court requested her to submit a fresh application since the quantum of maintenance payment was not accepted by both parties.

"I can't believe that this is happening. "I still love him," Nurul Hidayah said.

Nurul Hidayah said she would sue Suhaidi’s family.

She had sacrificed everything, studies, virginity, and now had a broken heart.

That's the price she paid for LOVE.
