It happened again. Not once, not twice; as often as is needed.

Court exhibits have gone missing right under the noses of the police.

This is the latest incident in the Kota Baru district police headquaters comes after a year a similar incident was reported at Selangor police contigent. In both cases, the evidence that went missing was drugs.

The evidence — more than 1,000 psychotropic pills, 7g of heroin and 400ml of cough mixture — had been seized in 12 operations in the district last year.

Also missing were investigation papers relating to cases involving trafficking and possession.

The case, classified as causing the disappearance of evidence. Investigators have yet to determine if the drugs had gone missing when they were confiscated or when they were transported to the Chemistry Department for analysis. It is learnt that the drugs were not labelled and had been stored in the evidence room of the district’s narcotics division.

In May 2005, more than 60,000 psychotropic pills went missing from a vault at the Selangor Narcotics Department. The disappearance of the pills, worth almost RM1 million, was discovered only when three boxes containing the pills, crucial evidence in a drug-trafficking case, turned up empty during High Court proceedings. The pills were evidence in two cases involving Tua Bit, 61, who was accused of trafficking in nimetazepam (also known as Erimin-5) in 2002.
