MALAYSIA'S RULING UMNO PARTY IN TURMOIL OVER MAHATHIR'S ATTACKS - ANWAR
"I believe that the party is in turmoil. Never mind the assertions of party leaders that things are normal and usual and this is not something new," Anwar told reporters.
"Members of the dominant United Malays National Organization (UMNO) are upset with the "way things are going."
"My contact with UMNO is the grassroots leaders and they are quite disillusioned themselves," he said.
Anwar has called on Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to defuse the situation by fully answering the questions raised by Mahathir.
"Because of his stature as a former prime minister, naturally his criticisms merit some attention."
Anwar also criticized the media "blackout" on Mahathir.
"It takes a lot of patience for me to say this, but I believe ... we have to accord him with the respect and regard and his right to express his views, " he said.

Anwar Ibrahim supports Mahathir's claim to a right to express his opinion and wanted Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to respond to those allegations of mismanagement.
Anwar, however, felt that Mahathir doesn't seem to be sincere in seeking reforms.
"The issues Mahathir raised are "peculiar to his personal interest" because he is demanding that his pet projects be implemented "without question," he said.

Dear Maverick,
You asked, "Would we see the marriage of convenience?"
Probably to understand the situation better and what Anwar really meant when he said that he respected the right for Mahathir to air his views, you should see the video interview of Anwar with Joceline Tan of STAR on 3rd Sept 2004, a day after he was released from prison.
Looking back to the interview, you'll see that after six long years of imprisonment, Anwar still talks with clear conscience and consistent with his reform agenda.
Australia Broadcasting Cooperation(ABC) interviewed Anwar on this issue. You can listen to the audio interview in the website. Hope this will help us to comprehend the issue in a broader spectrum.
