Mahathir Mohamad today (June 27, 2006) described Nazri Aziz as a "hatchet man", saying a momentum is being created to demonise and expel him from Umno.
"Nazri is what they call the hatchet man. I don't care at all for his opinion," he said, after a dialogue session in the Malaysian Institute of Management Global Exchange Forum themed "A Leader's Imperative: Managing Global Challenges."
You know what's a hatchet man?
1 : one hired for murder, coercion, or attack
2 a : a writer specializing in invective
2 b : a person hired to perform underhanded or unscrupulous tasks (as ruin reputations)
So, is Mahathir referring to Nazri as the hired murderer, hired Calumny, Canard writer or a Hobgoblin ?
Nazri today (June 26, 2006) vowed to vigorously defend the Umno leadership and the government against attacks by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
"I don't want my PM and DPM to reply and as the Minister in the Prime Minister's department and from Umno, I take it upon myself to reply to all these allegations," he said.
"We are going to follow him. We are not going to let him make statements while we keep quiet. People will misconstrue that he is telling the truth," he said.
Nazri declared: "If it is open war, we go to war-lah. I think his style is also like my style."
Wow, "go to war"? It's an open war? War with whom???
Nazri's going to war with an ex-prime minister and ex-UMNO President? Is this the values of UMNO, a party consisting mainly of Malays and Muslims and this statement comes none other than from a muslim himself?
En Nazri, read the Quran and read what it says about how to respect an elder and a former state leader. That man had not attacked you nor your family or religion and it looks like you prefer to declare a Jihad against another Muslim elder who is well-respected in the community and had done great things for the nation.
"God loveth not that evil should be noised abroad in public speech, except where injustice hath been done; for God is He Who heareth and knoweth all things. Whether ye publish a good deed or conceal it or cover evil with pardon, verily God doth out and hath power." [Surah 4 - Al Nisa; ayat 148]
"O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey His Messenger and those charged with authority among you. If you differ in anything among yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger if you do believe in Allah and the Last Day. This is the best [for you] and best in the end." [Surah 4 - Al Nisa; ayat 59]
From Abdullah ibn’Umar, Bukhari relates that the Prophet said:
"To listen and obey is a must for every Muslim in every matter whether he likes it or not. But if he is asked to commit sin, then he is not under obligation to listen and obey."
Brotherhood in Islam means caring, loving, and cooperating with one another. In this context, the Prophet said:
"Do not end a friendship, do not turn your back, do not hate each other, and do not envy each other. As a servant of Allah, maintain brotherhood. Two Muslims may not remain on non-speaking terms with each other for more than three days."
[Narrated by Malik, Bulchari, Abu Da’ud, Tirmidhi, and Nasa’i]
Nazri also challenged Mahathir to resign from Umno and join the opposition so that he (Nazri) can take him on fully on the issues.
Mahathir reminded Nazri that Umno does not belong to him.
"It belongs to all Malays and he has no right to say who should be in or out. Before he was born ... I was already in Umno."
He said if he is still popular among the rank and file, it will be difficult to remove him, but it would be easier if he is first demonised.
"Nobody wants to take the risk to talk ... if you take the risk, you will be punished."
He said among those people who are "feeling the pinch" are ministers and mentris besar who want to be in the good books.
"I have nothing to gain. But when people appeal to me and also because when I see wrong things being done, I feel it is my duty. Nobody wants to stick their neck out, so l did."

Mave, Desi posted some interesting opinions today. Wanna comment?
mave sm:
NO, I always use DESIDERATA in blogsworld, or YLChong, my actual father-given name.
I don't hide behind "pennames", hence even blog's name has both desiderata-ylchong.
Transparency, remember?
But it's okay with me that others use Pennama as they have links to their blogs, like thee and Anak Merdeka. I hate ANON!
Chow, have fun-D!
PS: It's true I've used the phrase a few times -- Quo Vadis, the latest directed at Anwar I and Lik KS, Opposition Leaders wat!:(
