The Dilemma of a Mufti

‘Malays spend RM4bil a ‘year on liquor, gambling’

Are you sure your are correct, Haji Harussani? or have you being misled by some reports from sources which were not validated?

According to Perak Mufti, Datuk Seri Harussani Zakaria, MALAYS in the country spend about RM4 billion a year on liquor and gambling.

Of the amount, he said, RM1billion went to liquor and RM3billion to gambling.

“About 75% of those who 'tikam ekor' (4-digit) are Malays,” he said, adding that he got the statistics from a recent magazine, which he did not name.

Harussani attributed the worrying trend to the secularism that had crept into Islamic society here.

He said it seemed that Muslims were not concerned about what was halal and what was haram.

He said Muslims in the country also face other threats such as pluralism, hedonism and liberalism.

He said Perak had collected RM30 million in tithes last year and given out donations totalling RM5.2million to students for their studies.

But, Harussani, you got the statistics from a magazine who do not validate their own statistics and you are a religious leader who is suppose to validate it before using it to pass judgment.

"But do not obey each feeble oath-monger, Detractor, Spreader abroad of slanders, Hinderer of the good, transgressor, malefactor, Greedy, Therewithal, Intrusive" (Al Qalam Surah 68 Ayat:10-13)

Some of them are illiterate, knowing nothing of the Book but wishful thinking. They only speculate. (Surah Al Baqarah Ayat 78)

Nay, but We hurl the truth against falsehood and it cuts right through the brain and lo! it vanishes. Woe without end for you for what you portray! (Al Anbiya Surah 21 Ayat18)

Is there something wrong or is it the truth that Malaysian Muslims did spent RM4 billion on liquor and gambling?
