"One Book that Rules them All" Meme

Lynne was an avid reader of books. I read HER (not his, sorry Lynne) Meme and suffered psychosis paranoias... that beauty lass seems to have read all the books I had never heard of, let alone read them. I wanted to asked HER to post a book review on them but I may have posted divergent comments on his blog.

Anyway, it was kind of HER to smoothen my phobia and psychosis. As a compliment to lynne, I like to take HER challenge to do one here.

  1. One book that changed my life: For Lynne it was Stephen Covey's "7 Habits of Highly Effective People". Oh, This happen to be the only book he refered and I had read once. I never got a inkling for what's it aims to achieve. Maybe, Stephen is just too symbiotical and lack profound insights of how effectiveness can be garnered. For me, it was: "The Predators' Ball" by Connie Bruck. This is about the story of one man, Michael Milken, a Maverick (that's how I adopted the moniker), a graduate from Wharton School, the University of Pennsylvania. He invented the junk bonds, helping cash-strapped but viable companies to outgrow and conquer the corporate world. He made billions out of the money game, the game he plays in absolutism (I am trying to configure it..hehehe)

  2. One book that I have read more than once: Quite many, I presumed (because I can't understand them when I read the first time). There're a few I like to remind myself: It's George S. Clason's "The Richest Man in Babylon". This book is about how poor man can become rich, if only he starts to save from ten pennies to ten percent each month. Another is Paulo Coelho's "The Alchemist" (Pak Adib brought me to Coelho's world), an adventure to realise one's fortune at a faraway land; an eternal testament to follow our dreams and listening out heart. The third is Ayn Rand's "The Fountainhead", a story about a desperate recalcitrant architect and an exquisite beautiful woman; that man's ego is the fountainhead of human progress. I like to mention another book: "An Autobiography of Lee Iacocca", a failed President of Ford Motor who became the CEO of Chrysler and who brought Chrysler back from the brink of oblivion and created the infamous phenomenal Mustang.

  3. One book I would want on a deserted island: "The Bible" and "The Quran" - both; one won't do, as I need both to survive. You won't understand it till you read thoroughly both of them with an open mind.

  4. One book that made me laugh: "Never Wrestle with A Pig" by Mark H. McCormack. It teach you how to conduct yourself when you deal with oxymoroniacs and dim-wits.

  5. One book that made me cry: I hate crying... because I am an emotional type. I will cry when I watch saddist movies. But one book made me cry - "The Law of Jurisprudence" - it's so fucking tough and philosphical and I hardly can remember those passages... it bemires my thought and cross-wired my nerves. I got to get it out of my life or alternatively master it.

  6. One book I wish I'd written: "Project Management Demystified" and "The New Doctrines of Money". The former is written by Geoff Reiss and I hope to write one myself using the same title. The later ... it was my dream thesis which is in progress.

  7. One book I wish had never been written: I haven't publish any book as yet. One Book I wish it was Not Written: "Beyond Belief - A Buddhist Critique of Fundamentalist Christianity"by A.L. De Silva. The writer lacks profound knowledge and sees the metaphysical world through the smoke screen and had blinkered vision.

  8. One book I am currently reading: "The Law of Jurisprudence"... I am struggling!! Please help me Dr. Wayne Morrison and Dr James Penner???

  9. One book I have been meaning to read: "The Quran and The Bible". After reading so many times, I have yet to satisfy myself!

  10. One book I think everyone should read: "The Undiscovered Self" by Carl G. Jung. It's about Jung's lifelong social and psychological concerns and address the uneasy relation between the individual and mass society. Another is "The Road Less Traveled by M. Scott Peck, a book on the psychology of love, traditional values and spiritual growth.

To cap off, I suggest Muslims and non-Muslims must read these books:

"Islam - A Short History" by Karen Armstrong which begins with the flight of Muhammad and his family from Medina, the origins of Shii and Sunnis Muslims, the emergence of Sufi mysticism and concludes with an assessment of Islam today and its challenges.

Another book by Karen is "The Battle for God - Fundamentalism in Judahism, Christianity and Islam" which explains how and why the understanding of religion and society differs so starkly from that of their contemporaries.

Yet another is "The book of Knowledge" by Imam Al Gazzali, an English rendition of Imam Gazzali's most famous work Ihya "Uloom al-din" in Arabic which deals thoroughly with the intrinsic value, dimensions of knowledge and the science of religion. This book was translated by Nabih Amin Faris.

That's enough!

I enjoyed this Meme and thanks to Lynne.

Anyone care to join?

Ah Moi? DEsi the Derata? Howsy? Lucia? Gukita? Peter Wood? Pak Adib? Pak Lah? Khairy? Rafidah? Hishamuddin the Kerisman? and Mahathir, my Socio-Political Icon?

...and I shouldn't miss, the one and only ... Marina Mahathir, whom I admired the most in literacy.

Anyways, thanx for dong the meme, you've got some interesting ones there. I think Karen Armstrong is definitely a good author to read up and understand the major religions ... of course, I only got halfwhay through her book about the History of God [i got lost at the Holy Trinity chapter, and kinda left it there.. will pick it up again when I'm ready!].

Cheers!

karen armstrong had one of her books banned in malaysia right? something about god too i think (or islam).

long time i haven't touch a book so i suppose i can't do this meme. i have some comments though.

i have not read stephen covey's '7 habits of highly effective people' but i had listen to its CDs.

yep i had read 'the road less traveled' and agree it was a good book. carl jung's (one of my favourite psychologist) 'the undiscovered self' sounds interesting. maybe i should give it a try. btw, was it carl jung who came up with the 'johari window'?

one book that made me cry is 'roots' by alex hailey. very sad to read about the situation of the slave at that time esp. of course kunta kinte.

one book that change my life gotta be 'how to win friends and influence people' by dale carnegie. it's a very down to earth book that really show you the easy and realistic way of geting people to like you.

uh oh, i seem to be doing the meme (partly) here already! :)
