Suddenly, the thunder struck, hard, loud and clear! Pak Lah had received divine inspiration. No more emphasis on argriculture; No more Batik Project and Kereta Roda-Tiga; No more frugalistic mentality because it hurts so many people and it gives bullet to some to attack. The intention to be frugal was idealistic and for the long-term good of the nation, but in the short term and near term, it could dethrone a dynasty. Pak Lah learns his lesson, hard and nauseatic and at times, nostalgic. So, the thunder struck hard, albeit without the precursor of the lightning (cos, the power outage had occurred untimely): News! News!
Johor gets Southern Corridor worth $15b! Penang gets what they want - 2nd sCeynic Bridge and Mo-No-Rail! KL-Singh Bullet Tube will be soon... very soon, as soon as Goh Chok Tong agree, oh sorry, Lee Hsien Loong and LKY agrees.
So finally, after so much begging, and so many No, No, No, Penang's second bridge and monorail projects given cabinet approval
The Cabinet switch on the green light and CM Koh gets his 2nd Bridge. As good luck always comes with a bonus, Koh gets a bonus scomrail.
Prime Minister Abdullah also said he would be approving the proposed bullet truck between KL and Singh.
Koh was not the only person smiling. UEM will be celebrating. Pak Lah said that 2nd bridge will be given to UEM as a concession to build, manage, operate and maintain (BOT-M) UEM Group is also the concession holder for the present bridge link to the mainland built in 1985. The 24km second bridge, which will connect Batu Kawan in Seberang Prai to Batu Maung on the island, is estimated to cost RM2.8bil.
“UEM is a company which has extensive expertise and experience in the matter,” said Abdullah.
For the Penang monorail project, "ONLY eligible" companies would be invited to submit Requests for Proposal (RFP) for its implementation, Abdullah said.
UEM is also said to be interested in the Penang monorail project. UEM experience is the design of the 29km-long Putra LRT project. Syed Mokhtar and his MMC will also be bidding it.
Analysts say the light monorail transit system will cost about RM1.1bil to build.
My analysis said UEM have no chance unless it team up with MTran. Whoever gets to partner Mtran, be it MMC or UEM, they stand the best chance.
As for bullet truck submitted by YTL, he said the Government viewed it positively.
He said the Government would ask for a "singh-economic study" to be undertaken to ascertain the impact on the national interest.
Abdullah said this showed the Government’s commitment to streamline the privatisation programme while encouraging the private sector to be the catalyst for economic growth.
The bullet train project, estimated to cost RM8bil, is expected to cut travelling time between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore to 90 minutes, making the journey just 40 minutes longer than it would take by air.
The bullet train, which runs on electricity, will not only benefit Tenaga Nasional and the independent power producers but also boost tourism.
NST add Ohms to the news. They spin: Things are moving [exceptionally fast!] First, the south peninsula got SJC. Now the north gets B&M - Bridge and Monorail.
Things suddenly moving fast? It must have surprise many of us. Over the last 3 years, the emphasis was on batik and argriculture. The strategic financial plan was to payoff the huge debt incurred by Dr. M.
Why a sudden about turn? Did Pak Lah saw the light or saw the lightning coming?
Next piece of news:
Open tender for monorail project
The bidding for the Monorail project is expected in the next few months.
Dr Koh Tsu Koon said the building of the monorail was necessary to overcome the weaknesses in the public transport system that had become serious in the State. Sure, you are right, Mr. Koh. But you need an MRT, not LRT!!! The success of Singapore's public transport system is attributable to the foresight of building the MRT before the mass chaos erupted and strangled the roads. Tho' late, better than never. But Monorail? It's short-sightedness.
NST reported that Scomi engineering outfit, Scomi Engineering Bhd, is part of a consortium that is reportedly bidding for the monorail project. It's certain, Kali; otherwise they would not have bought into MTran.
Others bidding for the project are Melewar Industrial Group Bhd and MMC Metrail Sdn Bhd.
A source from Scomi said yesterday a proposal would be submitted to the Government soon.
"Yes, we are bidding for the project," spokeswoman for Scomi said.
Although the company declined to identify its partner for the project or disclose anything about its proposal, rumours are rife that it will team up with KL Infrastructure Group Bhd, operator of the existing monorail system in Kuala Lumpur.
Melewar has announced that it is proposing to build a 51.12km Hi-Track ultra light loop monorail system there at a cost of RM1.58 billion.
MMC Metrail, in which Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary’s flagship MMC Corp Bhd has a 20 per cent stake, has been said to have received a letter of exclusivity to undertake the job.
The letter was given in October 2003 to build a RM1.1 billion 37km long monorail transit linking Komtar and Bayan Lepas.
The NST reported that UEM is expected to finalise the bridge design over the next few months.
Datuk Ahmad Pardas Senin, the MD and CEO of UEM Group, said he was confident the second Penang bridge would be theirs and it is expected to cost RM2.6 billion.
"We acknowledge the importance of this project for our country’s development, particularly to the people in the northern region," he said in a statement.
The first bridge was built 21 years ago and is used by 110,000 motorists daily.
Projects to benefit all races? Sure it would! The bridge will be used by all and everyone, irrespective of race, color or creed.
But Pareto's Law seems to persist?
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said the Government had learnt from its past experiences and would continue to carry out projects beneficial for all the people.
"We will improve other policies which have not been that effective," he said at the MIC’s 60th anniversary dinner. He said there was no alternative to Barisan Nasional in ensuring success for the country and its people.
