5-Star Public Toilets

50 sen five-star loo facility

For 50 sen, the public will get to enjoy “five-star” facilities at a public toilet in Dataran Shah Bandar, Kuala Trengganu. The restroom, costing more than RM200,000, was constructed by the Kuala Terengganu Municipal Council to provide a conducive amenity for locals and tourists. The toilet floor is tiled with Italian marble while decorative items and paintings adorn the walls.

For another RM1.50, one can even take a hot or cold shower. The counter staff will provide a towel and soap.

Does the public and tourists need 5-star toilet or just clean toilets?

Italian marble? Langkawi marble put tak boleh?

State Health, Unity, Consumer Affairs and Environment committee chairman Toh Chin Yaw said more “five-star” restrooms were in the pipeline. “We want to change the mindset of locals and remind them of the importance of maintaining the cleanliness of public toilets, “We are also aiming for zero complaints from tourists on filthy toilets,” he added.

Many more of these toilets in the pipeline? Are they part of Pak Lah's 9th Malaysia Plan projects?

Toh said he believed the public did not mind paying a bit more to use a restroom similar to that of a hotel. He said similar restrooms were available in Dungun and Kemaman while other local councils were planning to emulate the five-star concept for public toilets. Toh said contract janitors had to follow a maintenance timetable to ensure the public toilets were clean and stench-free.

Oh my God?????

TWO HUNDRED citizen-paid (tax) GRAND for a freaking toilet that we further need to pay to use? Man, it's more expensive than my family's house :(

I felt so poor right away. What's wrong with the people!

WOw, looking at the spanking new toilets, they definitely put my living room to shame.
What next? For the mere rental of RM50, you get to live in it? Throw in another RM3 you get to eat your nasi lemak in there?

only 50c lah. cheap. wait till you are in kl... they have toilet where you have to pay RM2.00. heh!

the thing is people usually goes to a toilet for only one purpose - to do 'big business' or 'small business', and usually most of them will be fast. so why pay as much as 50c when you won't be long there. go in, do your business and come out - that's it. don't tell me you are going to linger on the toilet to admire the marbles and paintings. what difference will the italian marbles and paintings on the walls do to our nature's call? nothing!

a simple basic CLEAN toilet would be good enough for me.

The toilets was build using tax payers money. It is maintained using tax payers money. Tax payers need to pay money to use the toilet build and maintain using their own money. :) Welcome to the triple joy of paying!

The same goes for all other facilities. Library, highway, etc.

Malaysians are taxed beyond imagination. Yet, majority still don't realised it.

Thanks Fird, it's the first time I read your comments.

Kenny, this is the attitude of the government of the day.

Helen, $50 to live there? hehehehe

Lucia, in KLCC the toilet at 1st floor is $2. But that's private property, not public toilet.

Carboncopy, welcome back. You had been absent for a long time. What happens to your blog -no updates?

Great post. I have read another interesting post about western tourists' encounter with public toilets in Malaysia & Singapore. You should check it out too.
