Juxtaposed or Double-tongue?

Education Minister Hishamuddin took to task MCA Youth secretary-general Dr Wee Ka Siong for making a baseless allegation that a Chinese teacher had been asked to teach Islamic religious knowledge.

“It’s easy to champion racial issues but the damage done by leaders who resort to such tactics will not be forgotten by BN leadership,” Hisham said.

“To say that we are forcing Chinese teachers to teach Islamic studies is totally unfounded, selfish and political."

“And when you combine that with race and religion, it is totally unforgivable.

“This is a warning to all aspiring young MPs. As far as I am concerned, I will not tolerate such talk and I will not forget,” Hisham said.

Hisham’s warning to MPs

In The Star report, Hishamuddin warns young party leaders, regardless of party, race or religion, must not gamble away the country's future for temporary political gain, Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said.

He said those who create racial and religious issues, even when there was not an iota of truth in them, would find themselves having to explain later.

“They will have to keep defending themselves and because the public and the leadership will not forget, they will not be able to move forward,” he said.

History, he said, had already proven that leaders who rose fast in a party were those who were brave enough to fight for what was necessary while balancing that with how they lead the country.

“Believe me, the elections will come before the party elections. If we lose out in the elections and not get the people's mandate, there won't be any meaning to getting a position in the party, not even that of Youth chief,” Hisham said.

Somehow, I am perplex by Hishmuddin's political ideology.

I totally agree with Hishamuddin that political party leaders must not gamble away the country's future for temporary political gain.

Hishamuddin was right when he said that: “It’s easy to champion racial issues but the damage done by leaders who resort to such tactics will not be forgotten by BN leadership.”

However, when Khairy championed racial issues at the expense of the minorities, in order to further his personal political objectives, Hishamuddin had come forward to defend him pronouncing him (Khairy) as having being misunderstood and therefore need not apologise. Isn't this juxtaposed? or, in essence, double-tongued? Or, is Hishamuddin taking an opportunity to take a swipe at his deputy paradoxically? Looks like he is on the offensive to thwart any possible challenge by his "protege".

Khairy said he would not apologise for his remarks. He said the statement was made to unite UMNO and strengthen UMNO and BN component parties.

“It has never crossed my mind to apologise to those who are hurt by what I said in Kedah last week. For me, if we truly fight for our race, once should not apologise. I have no intention of offending any BN component party. We are always sensitive to other people’s feelings but we have a role to protect the dignity of the Malays,” Khairy said.

“If there was a misunderstanding and if Khairy had been misquoted, there is no reason for him to apologise. But if the misunderstanding had created confusion and it’s the confusion that we have to apologise for, then there’s nothing wrong with that,” Hishamuddin said.

Taking an anology, MCA leaders could come forward and defend Dr Wee's statement by claiming that he was misunderstood too and that should the statement create confusion, then it's the confusion that Wee had only to apologise for.

We don't know what actually was the facts of the case of the teacher.

A Chinese newspaper report quoted Dr Wee, the MP for Ayer Itam, as saying recently that there had been a case of a Chinese teacher being forced to teach the subject of Islamic Religious Knowledge.

According to Hishamuddin, what really happened was that the female teacher concerned had been asked to look after the class temporarily at the start of the school term because the classrooms had not been adjusted then. “After the classrooms had been adjusted, the teacher was asked to teach the subject she was suppose to teach,” Hisham said.

If what Hishamuddin said was the true fact, then, Dr Wee should apologise for creating the confusion and not checking his facts. However, if truly, the non-Muslim teacher had been asked to teach the class on Islamic religious knowledge for which he/she wasn't competent in the subject matter, then, if the teacher had taken it upon himself/herself to to what was instructed, he/she would possibly create more confusion and cause further controversial religious issues. The question remains as to whether the teacher had been given clear instruction to only look after the classroom until such time where the adjustments were made. However, if the scheduled time-table of the class happens to be the Islamic Religious Knowledge lessons, the teacher could had miscontrued as being instrcuted to teach this subject for which he/she wasn't competent to do so. I do not and will not agree to the fact that a non-Muslim who is incompetent in Islamic knowledge should be asked to handle the subject matter as it will be extremely sensitive and would create havoc to the situation. Perhaps, the headmaster should had made himself clear to the teacher, for which, I believe, he did not.

From the views expressed by Hishamuddin over the two incidents, what is Hishamuddin's political ideology and philosophy? Could anyone be able to diagnose? I am certainly perplex and flabbergasted.

I think Lim Keng Yaik's view should had been the core ideology of all BN component parties stand.

Expressing concern over opportunism creeping into the party, Dr Lim said: “We must sack all opportunists, dump them into the river or sea and hope that they do not know how to swim so that they will drown.

“If we are not careful, opportunism will be a political malaise in our party,” he said in his address as party president at the 35th Gerakan national delegates conference.

He noted that there were opportunists fighting for positions such as councillors. He added that the worst were those who came into the party to enrich themselves, ask for state awards or get positions of power to abuse and bully the people.

“You don’t use party politics to enrich yourself. You go and enrich yourself outside,” he added.

Dr Lim said there were also opportunists who demanded for projects and would apply pressure on executive council members or deputy ministers to demand for the projects. They would threaten not to vote for them if they did not heed their demands.

“The days of shouting slogans are over. If not, you get leaders who know how to shout but that would take us nowhere. For sleeping members, it is time to wake up or ship out,” Lim said.
