Kedah UMNO: Decided before Investigation

What's there to investigate?

Umno president Abdullah Badawi has ordered an investigation into Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s claim of bribery in his defeat to be a delegate for the Kubang Pasu division. Pak Lah said he had instructed Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid and Kubang Pasu division chairman Datuk Johari Baharom to look into the claim.

Abdullah said the mentri besar had also informed him that he would be making a statement on the issue. “I’m leaving it to them (Mahdzir and Johari) as they will know better since it’s their division,” he told journalists

Even before an investigation team is formed or any investigation could start, Kedah Mentri Besar had already made up his decision that the "Election Process was Clean".

According to Chairman and Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Mahdzir Khalid, "there was no hanky- panky in the election process. Mahdzir said the onus was therefore on Mahathir to prove otherwise.

"Prove it by making an official complaint to the party disciplinary or management committees or even to the supreme council. Do that or let the case rest," Mahdzir said.

"As long as there is no proof and the complaining party is unwilling to show evidence, then I consider there is nothing for Kedah Umno to do. I am confident Dr Mahathir will accept the election outcome."

Wah, applying criminal process of "proof beyond reasonable doubt" ...

I thought it should be prove "the balance of probabilities" as this is a civil process of democratic election?

Even Tengku Razaleigh expressed surprise over Mahathir's defeat.

Tengku Razaleigh: “it should have been an easy win.”

“I am shocked, as he should have had an easy path. He is not just a great leader but is also a world renowned leader.”

Tengku Razaleigh expressed surprise that the former prime minister, who had created a name for the country, was suddenly not wanted by his own people, although he only left (office) three years ago.

“I don’t think the Malays are that ungrateful,” Razaleigh said. "There must be unseen forces as “otherwise how could Dr Mahathir suffer a loss when he was a leader in Kubang Pasu for more than 30 years and had brought more development there than to any other constituency in the country.”

“With the state of play, I suppose you can’t expect anything else other than a loss for Dr Mahathir. I think people – those who didn’t want to see him elected – were determined to stop him.”

“I don’t see how he will jeopardise the stability of Umno. Why should we be afraid of him? I fought him before," Razaleigh said.

Meanwhile, Zaid Ibrahim said Abdullah Badawi should not become the latest victim of Mahathir.

Saying Dr Mahathir’s record as a leader was "strong and unchallengeable", the backbencher added:

"It is clear … if he (Dr Mahathir) was a footballer he would be a very fast striker."

Outlining what he called the former prime minister’s record of "doing away" with past prime ministers or Umno leaders, he said:

"In 1969, the country’s first prime minister had to withdraw due to his pressure, in 1987 Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah had to withdraw … Hussein Onn also left office because of him. One does not want to see Abdullah Ahmad Badawi become his latest victim."

"The government should heed his (Mahathir's) warning and criticisms. We can’t shut him up as he has the right to speak," he said.

"The way to overcome his accusations is to reform the Mahathirism way."

Zaid said there appeared to be a clash "between Mahathirism, which is all about power, and the Islam Hadhari of Pak Lah".

"Now it seems like there is no direction. Dr Mahathir not being elected is a small thing. What is more important is where we are heading as a nation."

Zaid, you are right! Where is the nation heading? There is no direction except those directions that Khairy had schemed - the Khairy's Agenda ke atas nama orang-orang Melayu.

Had the Malays benefited? Look around ...many are in destitute situations. Why is it that the NEP is not benefiting the commoners, the Malay commoners? There are 4 Malays who got APs worth billions. There were a few who owns 17 companies, spent $3 million for Weddings; but yesterday, one Malay commoner was trashed by car repossessor because he couldn't pay 3 months installments. He is in ICU now, and he is Malay. Can't UMNO and Khairy help him? Can't those who spent $3mil on wedding celebration help advance him some money to pay his installment? They could lent $9mil to Khairy, can't they lent $1,000 to this poor Malay in Kedah? Why can't those $200 paid to delegates be given to this man who is also a Kedah Malay?

mmudahlupa,

Your point raised is somewhat interesting! Fedup with the spat? I don't; for one thing, it will open up the truth of yesteryears and foretell the tomorrows.

Economy of a country depends on the policies of govt; how and what system of governance could attract investors. No investors are prepared to give for free their 30% to someone who did not contribute. But the system says, investors must give! So, will you give? That's economic policy!

Another example, investors buy up a public listed company with potentials of growth and profits. Then the govt says, it is not in line with the NEP and Khazanah bought up the stakes from the foreigners. In this example, are we inviting foreigners to participate in our economic cake or are we driving them out?

So, economy and politics are intertwain.

As for the survey, if you ask a 10-year-old kid the questions, you can guess his answers. The question posed is who are those interviewed? If you asked a hawker, his interest is free or cheap licensing, price of foodstuffs and vegetables and a few beers to cheers. If you ask a university student, his interest and concern is school fees, scholarships, and employments (as long as he can get a white color job with a few thousand dollars pay, and a nice office); he wouldn't know what's economic management and policy making until he is part of the economic system.

So survey results will reflect those surveyed; not the masses. If you want to hear the masses, go to the marketplace, the stock-exchange, and the entertainment outlets and see the frustrated faces. Go ask contractors how's business and do they have enough projects for the coming year and hear what they say. Inflation? How many truly understand it! All we read is managed statistics, surreal indicators!
