ACA begins probe into pest control issue
THE Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) has begun investigations into the controversy involving the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) and pest control certificates.
An ACA spokesman, who confirmed this, said reports published in the newspapers would be taken into account.
“We do not investigate policies, but we will look into procedures, like whether they have been properly followed.
“Sometimes, the public may perceive things as abuse of power. But if there's accountability in an issue, then we do not disturb it.
“I believe an explanation has been given by MPSJ, and that complaints by people have been looked into,” continued the spokesman.
Meanwhile, several food-related businesses have engaged MPSJ-appointed consortium, SJ Pest Control Sdn Bhd, to provide services.
A restaurant operator in Puchong, who declined to be named, said he had only recently started business and he paid about RM960 for the consortium’s services.
When asked why he had engaged the consortium, he said: “I did not want to get into trouble with the local authorities.”
Meanwhile, other businessmen are worried as the date for their business licences would expire soon.
These operators claimed that once their licences had expired, they would have no choice but to engage the consortium for the pest control service or their licences would not be renewed.
A representative from the Pesticide Board of Malaysia, under the Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Ministry, said members of the consortium should possess valid licences for pest control service, in accordance with the Pest Control Act.
“The licence is to make sure that they are competent to carry out the job.
“They have to pass an exam to get the licence,” added the representative.
As for the current status of the issue, the representative said prima facie evidence was needed for action to be taken.
“Our instructors have been briefed on this issue and they are investigating it.
“We have to proceed according to the procedures stated in the Act.”
Pest Control? Good, but the pest at the food stalls and hawker centers can be eliminated. The problem is those pests within Parliament and local Councils. They are burgeoning day by day, suffering from obesity due to bulimia.
