A 20-year-old’s dream of getting a university degree was shattered in seconds on Aug 27 when she jumped from the first floor of her hostel here after being sodomised.
Janice (not her real name) fractured her spine in the four-metre fall that occurred barely 200 metres from her private university.
She may never walk again although doctors at the Perdana Specialist Hospital are trying their best to reconstruct her spine.
Janice, who has enrolled in a business administration course, may also not return to her studies as the incident has left her traumatised.
It is now more than a week after the incident but Janice is still afraid of being left alone in the hospital room here.
Her mother said yesterday that Janice was an emotional wreck after the incident which took place eight days after she registered at the institution.
"She is so frightened. I have to be always at her bedside. She is also terrified of never being able to walk again," the single parent said.
Janice had registered at the university on Aug 19 and returned home for a few days to pack her things. Janice returned to the hostel on Aug 27. At about 4pm, Janice's mother received a telephone call from a university official that Janice had a fall but her condition was not serious.
"You can imagine my horror when my daughter called me later and told me that she had been sodomised and had fractured her spine."
According to police, Janice was climbing the stairs to her hostel on the second floor of the building when a man pounced on her from behind.
He dragged her into a room on the first floor where he tied her hands and legs, stuffed her mouth with a piece of cloth and covered her eyes. He then sodomised her and fled.
A few minutes later, she untied herself and jumped from the first floor as she feared her attacker was still around.
A university spokesman said they would issue a statement on the incident soon.

This happen b4 during my era, my friend told me his uni got a student suicide after being tortured by seniors. I can imagine that coz I experienced it b4. Some seniors really took advantages to tortured the junior. When I was a senior, I never did that, I try my best to help my junior. Some people are so psyco with it, I really dun understand. I really sad to read this news, I almost cried out ok! I really wish her get well soon.
That the girl got sodomised is memang a horrible thing to happen...
but...
her spinal injuries are directly caused by her own actions!
I cringe wondering what was going through her mind when she decided to jump off the first floor: did she really think the attacker was still around? Did she really think jumping off was safer than taking the stairs? Was it actually a post-abuse suicide attempt?
Such a situation [the sodomy attack] should never have happened in the first place... however, how she's dealing with it is making her life a living hell.... and therefore giving "power" to the attacker.
She needs major counselling help - which she will probably never get in Malaysia!!
Lynne,
I think a young innocent girl under the tormenting situation would have made such decision in the nick of the moment, without thoughts of the risk associated.
I just felt very angry of the existence of such animals.
Kenny, Orientation programs in Uni are suppose to enhance integration but the abuses should not be allowed. However, Uni administrator do not care.
