Fuel Surcharge remains?

When the fuel price goes up, MAS quickly took steps to increase the surcharge. MAS's one way fuel surcharge range from RM20 to RM67 for domestic flights and US$20 to US$87 for international flights. AirAsia surcharge is between RM15 to RM40 domestic and RM51 to RM66 for international.

They blame the cost of fuel for their losses.

They claimed that they are subsidising the passengers and it's done in the interest of the nation, a social service, a good corporate citizen.

They sold their assets to par down the losses so that they could report profit in 2006. It did! The declared profit on the back of revenues from sales of the building at Jalan Sultan Ismail.

Now the fuel price is down to about US$50 from the highs of US$70. The jet fuel price had come down more than 26%.

But the surcharge remains.

All other airlines have taken steps to reduce the surcharge. Singapore Airline will cut 11% beginning tomorrow. Thai Airways will also cut surcharge by next week. Australia Qantas had already reduced. Cathay Pacific and other Chinese Carriers had cut about 6%.

That's the only way MAS can survive... pay all costs and include cost of poor quality to customers. Savings and over-charges, it's their income and profit.

MAS lease airplanes from PMB (Penerbangan Malaysia Berhad). Don't understand the logic behind it though. Could it be one of the reasons for the never ending losses?

National airline company cannot manage its own fleet of airplanes, and so badly managed. Must as well get rid of MAS.

In this country, don't ever hope for the prices of goods or services to ever come down. In the case of MAS, its directors will conveniently forget that a major proportion of the fuel surcharge has gone into increasing their own renumeration. Instead, they will cite fictitious 'improved' services, 'better' facilities, 'increased' staff training and so on for not reducing the surcharge. An
