Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud wants to encourage people to set up small-scale cottage industries in their homes here. But the mayor of Kuching North (DBKU), Hamid Yusof shot down the plan.
Taib is the chairman of DBKU and the Chief Minister of Sarawak, the most powerful man there.
Abang Johari, who is also Satok state assemblyman, when asked to respond to Hamid’s statement, said: "I don’t have to respond to the mayor’s outburst. I will talk to the chief minister about this.
Chief Minister, Taib Mahmud announced in November the approval of small-scale cottage industry such as embroidery, traditional cake and biscuit-making, and handicraft for villages to attract tourists. Taib had directed Barisan Nasional assemblymen to work out the scope and size of businesses in their constituencies.
State Housing Minister Datuk Seri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who chairs the committee, had on Sunday briefed a group of businessmen on the proposal. Details of the briefing were carried by the local media.
Hamid immediately issued a statement shooting down the initiative. "DBKU will not consider applications for permits or licences if the land in question is specified by the Land and Survey Department for use of a dwelling house," he said. "The minister concerned is advised to discuss with the State Planning Authority and the Land and Survey Department first about converting the land use."
