Adenan Satem made a shock announcement that he would not seek re-election as senior vice-president of PBB in the coming general assembly from Feb 9 to 14 in Miri.
The man who was at one time slated to be the successor of Sarawak chief minister Taib Mahmud had to call it a day. Few years ago, he was seen by many as the anointed person to succeed Taib Mahmud and his power-base grew. Eventually, he was portrayed as a threat to the current regime as his supporters played it up such as to show his growing popularity and a crave for power. He was then relegated in terms of power and influence, in an effort to curtail his hurried ambition to rise to the top. Probably he step on too many toes and too many of the regime's men were "hurt" by his actions when he starts to fill up positions of influence with his cadres.
Now, he finds himself more appropriate to step backwards, either to phrase out or as a strategic defensive acts to consolidate his positions and then relaunch his ambition at a later date. He seems to copy the strategy applied by Effendi Norwawi who had also called it a day many years ago and only resurface over the last 2 years. Apparently, Effendi could possibly be relaunching his influence and connections with the current regime and could possibly be the candidate to succeed the CM. However, it's still not known whether Effendi would seek election in the coming PBB general assembly. Even if he does not, it would not reduce the probability of him being the successor to Taib Mahmud.
