I am tagged by Moo_T and he created something that's Chinese New Year Meme named 5 Cultural Substance.
Moo_t, it's tough and I'll try; not sure I understand culture. I only observed culture such as: always being late by half an hour for dinner appointment, always look at a policemen on the highway with a wicked-eye (kopi-o kaki), you need a licence to earned an honest living but do not need one if you can connect with dishonest politicians whom you called friends but ain't actually.
Cultural substance? em???
Ok, First: Ang pow.
Every Chinese New Year, children expects angpow; for good luck (actually the receiver gets good luck and the giver, hard luck). It's traditional practices, passed down over the century. The moral of the story is that those early centuries, children can't get what they want or need and it is to provide a sense of hope in the not distant time that their wishes will be fulfilled once a year, during the Chinese New Year that the parents would not disappoint the kids if they made a wish to get something they want. However, this tradition passed down till today and becomes customary. Even Muslims and Hindus followed it.
2nd: Bonus and Pay rise
Each year, employees waited for the end of year or beginning of year with anticipations that they would receive pay rise and bonus. Government employees would get part of their bonus before Hari Raya. Chinese-owned or associated companies would usually pay bonuses to employees just before CNY and most likely, would also revised and upgrade the salary. It's traditional and hardly anyone challenges it nor disagree with the timing. However, some organizations do periodical adjustments and pay bonuses based on results at a specific period of the year.
3rd: Lion dance.
Traditionally, there will be lion dance during the CNY. Many cultural associations organised lion dance display during the CNY and they derived some "angpow" for their acts and display. I don't know when did lion dance tradition come from; it must be from China in the early dynasty of Chin. These display was said to thwart evil spirit, frightened them off and as a result, eliminate the evil spirit for the auspicious occasion such as the CNY and other auspicious occasions such as opening ceremony of a business, etc. Unfortunately, they drive these evil spirit, not to extinction, but to some other places and persons. Funnily, these spirits driven away would normally land in the body of politicians and ministers and ironically, these spirit helps them to become exceptionally wealthy and those who drive them away, will have to pay the price and made poorer. Maybe, we should reconsider this and instead, we should drive out the politicians and keep the spirit with us.
4th: Annual Dinner
For many companies, they would organise annual dinners before the CNY. It's a tradition that business organization would invite all employees, suppliers and sub-contractors for a dinner or banquet, to usher-in the CNY. Traditionally, these dinners would be held at restaurants or hotels, usually 10-course settings - good food and plenty of drinks, especially hard-liquor. The employees and sub-contractors would drink their life-out and get extremely drunk. Presently, karaoke sessions are part of the events, including giving away free gifts and prizes.
5th Open House
For rich people and politicians, in particular, Ministers and political parties, they would organize "open-house" lunch or dinner to celebrate auspicious occasions such as CNY, Deepavali and Hari Raya. Why? I don't know. Maybe, it's about show-off and to gather their supporters around, giving them some food and drinks, and reminding them to stay loyal and when the time is needed to vote, they will remember who to vote.
No. 6: My personal cultural Substance
All my pay-masters, those who are suppose to owe me or pay me, they must pay 100% the outstanding sum to me before the CNY - Pantang, if they didn't pay or didn't pay full amount - it's for good luck and it's to motivate me to work with dedication and loyalty. So, if you pay me late or not in full, I will no more be able to be loyal and dedicated because, the luck said so; it's not because I don't want to - it's luck and it's fate!!! LOL
P/S: Moo_t, sorry, this is all I can think of at this moment as I am waiting for my bonus and payment. No mood lah and cannot sleep...no more maggie mee and eggs left; can someone sent some to me?
