Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said the people should discard all misconception that embracing Islam will automatically change your race to Malay, as race will remain the same despite the change in your religion.
Taib said: "The Prophet Mohammad is not a Malay but an Arab. You cannot change your race, but anyone can be a Muslim."
Taib said the Chinese in China accepted Islam some 1,100 years ago while the Malays only accepted Islam some 300 years ago.
"Today there are more Chinese Muslims in China than the whole population in Malaysia," Taib pointed out, adding that the Chinese in mainland China had not abandoned their culture and civilization.
Citing an example, Taib said some mosques in China looked more like temples as there is no fixed design as to how a mosque should look like.
"The mosque with a dome was introduced by the Indians," Taib added.

Taib Mahmud is right~ Malays are not necessarily Muslims; some with Muslim name but behaving worst than Boars and Monitor Lizards... our local BN leaders are mainly good examples.
China has 50 millions, and their muslim AMOYS are anytime better than local amoys...
Let us visit China and get their woman for our wives.
Hmmm...quite a refreshing comment, coming from a very established BN figure.
But either he was misquoted or some of the facts mentioned aren't right. Islam came to the Malay Peninsular as early as the 14th Century, but in different waves and for a long time there were still many non-Muslim Malays. I can't really find from the research at what point in time the majority of Malays became Muslim.
The Onion Dome design of Mosques originated from Byzantine Greek Orthodox churches and it pre-dated Islam. When Muslims conquered the Byzantine lands, many churches were simply converted to mosques, and the Dome became a standard mosque architecture.
The equation of "Malay" and "Muslim" is a lot more sensitive in East Malaysia, as the majority of Bumiputra there really don't consider themselves "Malays" -they have their own cultural identity, and many are not Muslims.
Yawn.
He is right. Blame the Indians. They also brought the kris - it was the "thunderbolt" of Lord Indra, the Hindu god of rain and thunder. Those Indians also invented special rights for the backward classes (it is in their Constituition)and Federal territories. Not to mention curry and rice. Yep. Let's blame the Indians.
