They called it student power! Today, we have a different kind of student power. 3-decades ago, the student power is used to deal with political abuses and to protect students'' rights. Now, the students are aware of the attention they get from politicians and PTA. So, they used it and they got the results wanted.
Lim Nien Nie is only 13. She is from SM Raja Lumu in Klang Pandamaran. The teacher scolded her for shouting and using vulgar words at another students. She responded to the teacher with the same "good" manners. Probably, she uses a far "stronger" words on the teacher in order to forward her point to sent clear signals to the teacher. The teacher received her point clearly and unambiguously. The message caused the teacher's nerve to react instantaneously and caught her face. She called it "two punches".
Deputy Education Minister Datuk Noh Omar immediately instructed the teacher to be suspended and advised the parents to engage a lawyer to sue the teacher if they so wished. Nien Nie's father, Lim Kim Chung, 41, then lodged a police report.
If you are a teacher, how would you deal with such students?(exclude the good students and those who behaved well)
Let them be what they are, garbage, or, educate them till they changed for the better?

Maverick, I really got to applaud you for writing this. I've felt this for so long.... I think students' right and children's right has gone too far.
I've personally seen how teachers take the town bus to school because they dare not drive their own car to school for fear they'll get a free makeover.
I think there should be a more balanced directive to deal with all these.
I feel there is only one suitable way to prevent similar cases from happening. At the end of each academic year, starting from Form One, all the subject teachers must individually record the behaviour, discipline and work culture of each and every of their students, giving them grades based on 1(extremely bad) to 10(excellent).
The total grades are then added up and the average taken. Those students with scores of below a certain cut-off point, say 3/10, would be placed together in a certain class, say Form 1 Special, where they will be taught by 'veteran' teachers hand-picked by the Principal. Parents of students in these special classes would have to sign letters of guarantee that their children would be expelled within 24 hours upon the slightest misconduct.
This is because not every teacher can control his or her temper when provoked. I should add that students such as Lim Nien Nie, 13, would not had been able to enter secondary school had the 1960s Sec School Entrance Exam not been abolished.

kids are getting spoiler nowadays. last week I saw this kid at the midvalley wearing those annoying shoes with rollers and hit an auntie.
instead of saying sorry, the parents scolded the auntie for not lookign where she was going.. I was aghasted!
My neighbor conducts tuition at nite. Sometimes after classes the students will stand outside to wait for transport. This is at about 10 pm. They are loud and the language they use, you just wanna take out soap to wash their mouths. Once we told them off and got told to f*** off by them. And the teacher said they are the same in school. I think teachers deserve "combat" pay on top of salary. And where does the minister comes off telling parents to sue for something like this? Jeez, just let the students run the school, why don't you?

we read so many times of a head defending their men, like the rela head, the JAWI head, always defend their men, though we see what they did as obvious wrong. why can't nor be a good head?
Noh Omar should first go over Lim Nien Nie's Primary 5 and 6 disciplinary records before suspending the teacher. The vast majority of psycho students were already established mental cases well before they enter secondary school.
A visit to her neighbours would also reveal the level of discipline instilled by her parents who apparently tolerate the 13 year-old's usage of vulgar language. Her distasteful manners if repeated to certain people outside her school would not result only in a couple of punches in her face; she might end up as a corpse.

Now all the teachers are going to have a tough time enforcing discipline in schools.

Back when I was in school, there has always been the fear that should we be caned by the HM or the teacher, we could be rest assured that another round of canings would await us should our fathers come to know of this. Carrying this 'no nonsense' attitude of my dad, when my kids were in primary school, I even told the HM that he should not spare the rod on my kids should they step of line. When they went on to secondary school, I was already on the school's Board of Governors and I could see the problems faced by the HM dealing with the uncouthed, unruly ill-disciplined kids. I told my kids since I was on the school Board, they had better behave themselves or they would be, not only getting the medicine from the HM, but getting from me as well.
Bad behaviour from boys are bad enough but coming from girls, this is totally unbecoming. Instead of disciplining the teacher why didn't the Minister and school find ways to discipline the kid. Spare the rod and spoil the child. For me, I feel like putting the girl over my lap and give her the good old English spanking across her butts.
Has Noh heard of vicarious liability yet? Sue the Education Department and the government. They can pay. The teacher can't!

There were 5 witnesses inside and outside the class who saw the teacher punching the girl and testified to the principle. So I don't know what you are trying to insinuate. Can't read Chinese isit?

The teacher should have never allowed emotions to take over reason. Just send the girl to the school head and let that be the school head's problem. Or even better, i'd call her parents up and ask for a meeting.
If the girl was my child, i'd personally take her to the teacher and pass a rotan to the teacher to smack her.
