China Bridge Collapse

A 320metre bridge spanning the Jiantuo River in Hunan Fenghuang County collapsed, killing 29 people and 46 missing.

On June 15, a bridge that spanned the Xijiang River in Guangdong province also collapsed killing 9 people.

In January 1999, a pedestrian bridge spanning the Qi River in Sichuan province also collapse, killing 40 people.

United Engineers Malaysia (UEM), the concession holder for Penang Second Bridge may be worried now.

UEM had partnered China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd (CHEC) in a joint-venture to build the Penang 2nd Bridge because the Chinese government promised to be finance RM1.7 billion.

CHEC is currently constructing the 32.4km Sutong Bridge connecting Suzhou and Nantong. CHEC had completed the 32.5km Donghai Bridge connecting Shanghai and Yangshan Deepwater Port. UEM, are you worried?

I don't think their expertise is the problem.

If I am worried, it'll just be the bridge material and the number of middleman.

One report said that there is no steel bar used in the collapsed track. Never knew such structure can be built without steel bars. Another anyhow-company?
