The government of Malaysia had agreed to pay Gerbang Perdana RM292.52mil as compensation for wrongful termination of the contract to built the Crooked Bridge project which is suppose to replace the Johor Causeway.
The letter of award was issued to Gerbang Perdana, knowing fully well the risk to proceed and in less than one month, the project was suspended by Pak Lah.
Initially, Gerbang Perdana had wanted to claim RM100mil compensation for the early termination. They later decided that the compensation could be more... they got it; Syabas!!!
The claim committee in PWD told me with great confidence that it will be nothing more than RM10mil. I told them - wait and see; it will surely be more than what you anticipated...he was angry with my statement as being frivolous and vexatious, a kind of contempt and disrespect to their professional standings.
These professionals may have learn a lesson or two from this case; I hope! Realism (social reality) and pragmatism (commercial reality) is not the same as Idealism and naivety.

The directors of Gerbang Perdana are of course bigshots of a certain political party
Good God! Had the bridge been built, how much would it have cost? I can't remember anymore, because in this past year, $$ billions and $$zillions of corridors north, south, east, west have been hurled at us.
The cancellation has indeed become a very costly decision. If, say, the bridge had a price tag of $150mil, at least we get a bridge.
Now we fork out &*@#%&RM292.5mil, and we get no bridge. What twisted logic is this?
Malu, Malu, Malu
Thanks for exposing this essentially corrupt act.
It is absolutely true that corruption and bribery are to a greater or lesser degree behind each and every untoward incident in Malaysia, be it the carnage on the roads, the substandard construction, the needless loss of life due to the fire and sinking of Mersing to Tioman ferry, the lack or total absence of maintenance, injustice, the list is endless.
Eradicate corruption and bribery and many problems will be solved.
wanna get rich the autoban way. get into politics and become well connected with the powers-that-be. get yourself awarded a multi-million contract and then before work has commenced have the project cancelled. and request for millions of compensation. sure approved. thats the brightest and fastest way to get rich just by shaking your legs and doing nothing.
and the governemnt has the cheek to tell the rakyat that they can no longer afford subsidies. but at the same time has the money to line up the pockets of others.
Yupe, reality. What PWD people see is how AA falls in USA because of Enron, but they fail to notice crooks NEVER falls in Bolehland.
And don't forget, with normal business sense, those with money can actually BUY OUT gerbang perdana and wind it up. Since this is bolehland business, business are "exciting".
BTW, Scomi just won "yet another" Petronas concessions.
guess bodowi & sami should be pretty happy with that figure...
its time for them to buy another toy or build another house in another far away land.
knowing the full risk of the venture, the govt contract drafter should include an escape clause for the government. compensation is inevitable in any unforeseeable event but must commensurate with the work done & expenses incurred.
Okay RM300 mil + RM90 for the space bullshit = A WHOLE LOT OF WASTING MONEY.
Do we even have anything left for something that is partially good for the country?
