Dilemma of Corruption & Racial Divide

At TheStar Online today, there are two critical news reported.

Firstly, it was highlighted during the Gerakan National Delegates Conference 2007 on the abuse of funds and corruption.

In the article captioned, Hard stance on corruption, Perak delegate Cheng Teng Woh said the people were worried and uncomfortable with what was reported in the Auditor-general's report especially since it happened every year. Cheng said the concern now was how much of the RM15bil allocated for the Ninth Malaysia Plan would disappear due to abuse of funds.

Youth delegate, Paul Yong, said: “There was a lot of wasted money. The Government paid 10 times more than the market price for some items. If we want to say it frankly, it is corruption. But what is the government’s action? Where are the promises that were made in 2004?”

Kelantan delegate Gan Kim Keng said apart from government staff, there were also political leaders who only served themselves and not the people. “They got into politics not to work for the people but to find business opportunities for themselves by getting into a position of power.”

In another article, Prime Minister Pak Lah said "No denying racial issues and [Quote] the truth is there have been times when the country has "come to close to the brink of disaster".

"We have been solving one racial issue after another. That is a fact," Pak Lah said when delivering his address at the Gerakan National Delegates Conference.

"I do not want to pretend that everything is great and there are no problems, no weaknesses and no flaws. I do not want to be in a state of denial.

"People tell me 'it's nothing. Don't worry Pak Lah. Everything's okay.' But the more people tell me not to worry, the more I worry. Because some people just say that because they feel sorry and want to reassure me.

"But I say 'tell the truth even if it's painful.'

"The Prime Minister must have the courage and readiness to listen to even the worst of stories about the country or himself," he added.

Abdullah said one should never allow one's self to sink into the "hole of denial" as this would cause problems to pile up and remain unresolved.

"By then it might be too late and this worries us all," he added.

He said the country was now facing a "disappointing" mindset and attitude with regards to racial and religious issues.

It is unfortunate, he noted, how quickly people get caught into taking the racial and religious lines on issues.

What was spoken above by the Prime Minister and the delegates were facts, not imaginations. Res Ipsa Locquitur!
