Riding on Criminal Opportunities

Crimes have increase aggressively an substantially over the last few years.

More murders, more rapes, more kidnappings.

Krishnasamy shot dead; Nurin raped and murdered, Sharlinie kidnapped and unknown destiny.

These are the latest. Much earlier, Ooi Ying Ying (4-yr-old), Ho Ping (7-yr-old) and Loh Ching Poon (8-yr-old) were murdered.

Remisier Koo May Ling and her 3-yr-old son were murdered at their condominium at Jalan Klang Lama on Nov 2007; Ang Chin Peng and Wong Tan Yong were double-murdered at Kepong on Sept 2007; Padang Serai MCA Youth Vice-chairman Ching Eng Wah was gunned down in August 2007; UTAR student Tang Lai Meng was murdered in her rented house at Cheras in August 2007; local Tamil actress K. Sujatha death is unconfirmed; Hairstylist Ooi Choo Lee was murdered at her salon; and many, many, many more such as May Goh Lee Fang, Patricia Wong, Chong Fee Cheng, Julia Law Lee Mei, MCA Youth Leader Mah Ann Ann (who was also gunned down), couple Pok Chua Wen and Chong Pui Wan, etc, etc, etc.

The government had a solution - install more CCTVs at playgrounds and crime-prone areas.

Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman wants more close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the city for detecting and preventing crimes.

And he wants the Johor Baru City Council to install the CCTVs after the police have identified the strategic locations.

“These cameras cannot only prevent crimes but also help detect criminals,” he told reporters while visiting the late Tenggaroh assemblyman Datuk S. Krishnasamy’s house in Bandar Putra here yesterday.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo said the state government would ask the police to identify the crime-prone areas and strategic locations for the cameras.

He also said that 200 CCTVs have been installed in public areas and 400 cameras would be installed this year, followed by 500 next year.

“There will be two locations for the CCTV monitoring system – police station and local authorities.

The Housing and Local Government Ministry will install rented closed-circuit TVs (CCTVs) in crime-prone areas under the jurisdiction of 25 municipal and city councils.

Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting said the areas included a few tourism spots in Johor, Penang and the Klang Valley.

The ministry secured a special allocation of RM75mil from the Finance Ministry on Jan 2 to install such devices in an initial effort to fight crime.

The ministry decided to use the funds to rent CCTVs and engage the services of the providers to maintain the facilities as it was cheaper than purchasing them, Ong told reporters after launching the Malaysian Annual Real Estate Convention 2008 here yesterday.

Are CCTVs the right solution?

Was it because there weren't enough CCTV that was the reasons for the crime escalation?

Well, someone had got a big contract to supply and install CCTVs.

Ong Ka Ting's ministry had got a special allocation for $75mil contract.

Abdul Ghani Othman will be giving out more than $100mil contract to supply and install CCTVs.

Khir Toyo and City Hall will also be awarding a few hundred millions of contract to supply and install CCTVs.

A few contractors will be rich. Election is coming... election contributions and sponsorships are needed. Upfront, upfront, anyone willing to pay?

Disband the entire PDRM and use the money saved to install CCTVs in every nook and corner of the country. Chua Soi Lek would be the first to protest

Mave

It has yet to be proven that installing CCTVs WILL actually crime. They may reduce crime in the areas monitored.

stupid idea, what does cctv do any good when police got picture still cannot catch the thief (and need fbi/spain assistance to translate the picture)....

do you think the thief will scare police gun, or cctv, imho police (dedicatedm not those asking for duit kopi) presence is utmost important....

cynicsm prevails unless the govt comes clean on the contract award. aint no surprise if some unknown with no expertise gets all the juices. just like the RM400,000 toilet which has now been shut down, I will be most surprise if this CCTV will be wel maintained to serve its purpose. No, its not the CCTV's fault, its the corruption.

Bayi,

Malaysian Politicians looks at every risks and curse as opportunities of biz.

Denzook,

Ya, Pak Lah should go on his knees to plea. In fact Mat Rempit is now engaged to solve this crime.

CCTV will reduce crimes? my foot! not at all lah!!

are the ones who are going to monitor the CCTV be on the lookout all 24hrs? if the one who saw a crime happening on the CCTV alert the police, will the police come in time? will criminals think twice "ayoh. got CCTV or not here? think got lah so i'd better not rob the woman"??

no no no!

this is merely a knee jerk reaction from our politicians!

I think everyone will have good story to tell to their friends about their town/ city after the cctvs are installed. imagine, every cctv has a history...so this is where Nurin was placed after she is kiled and to prove it, see the cctv overhead. (!!??)

Lucia,

You probably are seeing practical reality. But the govt is seeing opportunity.

Ycg,

Probably, the CCTV will end up at the Sg Besi & Taman Maluri Second-hand shops; and some maybe at hotel rooms.

Constant_Drama,

Ya, ya, the govt never lie to the people; I remembered your article.

wat happen to the monitors installed at evry strech of the highway and the roads leadin to a towns cant they use to trace the movements of the culprits, wen the same highway tv was use to trail opposition leaders recently, why why why why fuck the BN govt or Bastards Nasionalis!

Anonymous said...

hahaha...cctv? we should privatise the whole police force..then we may get results. What makes you think the present bunch will rush to crime scene to apprehend the culprits.

Helen said...

Got, got plenty of cctvs hidden in hotelroom and toilet. lol

Honest, I'm not saying CCTV is totally useless. It's just that our implementation and long term strategy needed to ensure its viability is in doubt.

guess this will be a wishful thinking but if the numbers of police flers would just stop hanging around in mamak stalls day & night...

and do a couple of rounds in lorongs & housing estate...

we just might see the number (crime )coming down.

Mave,
You got the idea; some high profile contractor get the lucrative job, the tawkeys get the works done and the needed `kantong' get filled, including private ones...What do they call it? WIN-WIN Situation?

Forget about gotong-royong, or is it GohTong Loyong?... Too much hassle, too much work and campaign, YBs got to come down and pleed the rakyats to get together fight crimes; doesnt work nowadays lah...YBs got other works to do, meeting to attend..in air-cond rooms and hotels...more prestigous, right? People too busy and dont have time to look at other people's children. Let cameras do it...better... More up-to-date, no?

Present camera got arms you know; they can catch the culprit red handed and splash the face of the culprit on TV at the same time...That should be the way...everybody happy... :-)

Maverick SM said...

Artchan,

Are you the $75mil contractor appointed by Ong Ka Ting? Bcoz you laugh so loud! LOL!

Helen,

Your bedroom also got CCTV ah?

Beeranyone,

Ya, crimes are coming down because Pak Lah had pleaded with all the criminals to come forward to repent.

Maverick SM said...

Gukita,

Present cameras have arms? Hahaha!

my own experience when on a condo mgmt comm in Singapore & as evidenced by Nini's case, is that

CCTV shots are so blur; that UNLESS it is someone you know intimately, the image can be you, me or the dog named Boo

So unless we are willing to splurge for the most expensive lens on our CCTVs this ain't gonna work...AT ALL!

I mean, come on fellas, you think the gomen willing to pay RM15,000 per cctv for the REAL thing?

(yes they will pay the money but RM200 for the actual cctv, the other RM14,800 into their own pockets)

TO me this is yet another
"I ain't pushing the buck but my family/friend sure can supply any 5cents item you want for RM5000"

Does installing cctvs everywhere mean one day the law enforcement guys can say, "see? we've done all we can and still macam init"

I betcha it does. Wait & see.

Meanwhile my prayers goes still towards Sharlini & to all victims and their families of crimes.

Maverick SM said...

Gobloking,

The CCTV may be blur but still cost $15,000. What's important is that the govt has more projects to launch.
