ELECTION 2008: Toilets, dustbins on the wish list
The people in Kota Melaka parliamentary constituency have unique requests from the Barisan National. Barisan Nasional promised more dustbins and toilets in the Kota Melaka areas and the Barisan Nasional may just win in this DAP stronghold.
Carol Wong who owns a nail parlour in Jonker Walk (Kota Laksamana).Wong said tourists often dropped by her shop to inquire where the rubbish bins were. They would hand over their litter to her as hardly any bins were seen along Jonker Walk.
A gift shop owner in the area called for more public toilets to be built. "At the moment, there is only one toilet. This is definitely not enough. Tourists usually walk into our shops to use the toilets," she said.
State BN chief Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the Kota Melaka parliamentary and Bandar Hilir state constituencies "are yet to be entirely safe for the BN, so the party's mechanism would have to work hard to woo voters in these areas".
Analysis:
The BN intend to provide dustbins and more public toilets to the people of Kota Melaka. These are the peoples' only wishes from the Barisan Government. It should not be a problem for the Barisan government to provide dustbins and public toilets for the citizens in Melaka.
Barisan Nasional may just win in this DAP stronghold as there are signs that more people in the Kota Melaka parliamentary constituency are now favorably disposed towards the BN after they were promised the dustbins and toilets.

The wish list is for toilets that are clean and well-maintained, dustbins that are cleared regularly, etc., and not those that are neglected for the next 4 years after this election!
sounds so north korea where its leaders were given ipod as precious gift!
toilets and dustbins are acceptable if they come with BN stuffed in them for good. lol
WHAT LA? ONCE EVERY 5 YEARS ALL THE SANTA CLAUS IN TOWN, YET ASKED FOR TOILETS & DUSTBINS?
GO FOR THE STARS, THE MOONS & THE SKY LA?
BUT THEN AGAIN NOT SURPRISING WITH THOSE REQUESTS... AFTER ALL ITS A KNOWN FACT THAT THE BN MP COULD ONLY HANDLE MENIAL TASKS.
... SUPPORTER OF BARISAN RAKYAT
Is that all there is to it? To win over Melaka voters? Toilets and rubbish bins?
BN, how simpilstic can it all boil down to?
What about poverty? Seats and scholarships in universities for non bumis? Employment? And the rest that has been blogged ad nauseum,.... what about that?
I do not think at this day and age, BN can sway the voters with this 'feel good ' BS. The term is long and the brooding is bitter, enough is enough, say NO to dustbins and toilets, especially rubbish,...
No wonder Malaysia human development and economy going down the slope.
Isn't this suppose to be MUNICIPAL COUNCILS planning work?
Wrong people for the wrong job. WTF!
haiya,
bread and butter issues, mah. trying to tell the whole world thats how smart our voters are. cant even see beyond dustbins and toilets, e?
rustam, you think so, uh?
Dustbins and Toilets are merely wishes of TWO persons my dear! These are not the ONLY wishes of the constituents!
Others will wish for other things!
A very lame article!
Kota Melaka, please show all Malaysians that you are intelligent enough to know that the role of MP's and ADUN's are to debate and legislate laws, NOT to build more toilets and dustbins!
So easy to please these people. Just give them toilets and dustbins and you are their hero..
Bayi,
You are right.
Hasilox & Jefus,
Toilet and dustbins are basic physiological needs and if the state cannot solve this, what else?
Moo_t,
Ya, it's basic Municipal duties; and it must have been at such for decades. If you go to Kuching, you'll find there's no such issue.
Warrior2,
The Media highlighted it and had considered it as worthwhile to caption as headlines; I just follow the headlines.
Nee Sern,
The problem with Municipal is also the problems of legislators who controls the councillors.
Hopeful,
It's not so easy; it must have been something that pricks the people in Kota Melaka which are daily nuisance; as such, they are highlighting it to their potential rep.
dun u find it strange that they can CREATE a VENICE of the EAST and all this blah blah blah river restoration but no dustbins?????
im rolling on the floor laughing. competency of local councils of malaysia.
CK Tan,
It is not there is no dustbin; it is more of a systemic failure to manage garbage and insufficient point of collection of garbages.
If you visit Kuching, that place is a great example of garbage control system.
Is that media propaganda?
If not, Kota Malaccaans - there are more serious issues at hand then toilets/dustbins.
Please do not be swayed by the promise of toilets/dusting and re-think before casting your votes.
Oops..sorry, should read as dustbins.
isn't tat an irony? i hav no doubt abt cleanliness in kch, it's the best in the country. speaking of which, the garbage/municipal waste management in swak was being labeled as crony-controlled body. sigh~
GanCGeok,
It's a fact that people need dustbins and toilets; the plight is 50 years.
CK Tan,
Ya, Its ironical but it's a national problem except for Kuching.
There's no denying that there is a need for toilets/dustbins - however, if we take care of the upper stream ie good government/good governance/good controls the toilets/dustbins requirement will be a given.
For voters, let's take care of the upper stream by denying the BN the 2/3 majority so that sufficient check and balances are in place to take care of the rest.
Gancgeok,
Denying BN a 2/3 majority would not solve the physiological needs. Similarly, even if the opposition form the state govt, they may not be able to improve that too.
The idea of denying the BN a 2/3 majority is to ensure that there is check and balance in the legislature so as to ensure that laws or regulations which are detrimental to the interest of the rakyat are not bulldozed and approved by the legislature such such uncontrolled power of the ruling political organization who had the necessary majority to act unconscionably.
