The Virtues of Great Leaders

Guan Eng enggan keluar RM100 ribu

by Abdul Halim Mohd Rashid

"Dia (Lim) jawab: 'Susahlah, kalau nak pindah kena perbaiki. Terpaksa belanja sampai RM100 ribu.

Note: When Khir Toyo was made MB, he renovated his residence at RM5mil. Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hassan spent RM4.5 million for renovation of his residence. Pak Lah spent RM15.81mil to renovate the newly completed Putrajaya Seri Perdana residence which was constructed at a cost of RM24.17mil. Najib spent almost the same sum to renovate his residence in Putrajaya. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Abu Hassan Omar spent a total of RM77,642.07 on hotel accommodation and expenses while waiting for the renovation of his official residence to be completed )

What we learn today is that DAP and PKR is setting the examples for all others. In fact Tok Guru is the first MB who refuse to stay at the official residence for MB provided by the govt. This is the virtue of a great leader. They prefer to live a modest and simple life because what they spent will be taxpayers' money. Which Barisan Nasional MB had done that in the last 50 years?

If the leaders and ministers in the government would learn to be frugal and set a good example for all others to follow, then we wouldn't be seeing what we had seen of all the ministers and executives of the Barisan govt of which all of them aspires to be billionaires and had used the NEP as a legitimate instrument to enriched themselves at the expenses of the citizens.

Today we Malaysians will begin to see radical change in those states ruled by Barisan Rakyat. The MBs will no more spent unnecessarily. They would have to accept a life of modesty. The state Excos will be using the old cars from the previous state administrators. They will not be spending money on "Lawat sambil belajar" overseas trips of fun where they were spending time with belly dancers cruising along the river Nile and staying in the undersea hotels of Mauritius learning about toilet cleanliness, all paid from taxpayers fund.

Will those other states ruled by Barisan Nasional follow? I believe they would have to; otherwise, they would be history. Similarly, we Malaysians should no more hear in Parliament from Parliamentarians such as Jerai Badruddin's "Like wanita putus haid", Bung Mokhtar's "Leaking once a month", "Big needles, small needles" and “Boleh masuk sikit?” , and the famous Samy Vellu's "dilapidated parliament house is akin to an old woman who has lost her beauty."

Equally, we should also hear less of those racial discrimination from UMNO as the minority group will now have KeADILan and PAS to protect their interests. The Chinese will soon learn that PAS leaders uphold good virtues of fairness and justice and when they express their religious behaviors and sentiments, they are exalting the Muslims and never had intended to interfere with the non-Muslims' behavior except when it relates to communion at integrated functions. It is fair that when we have Muslims around us, the non-Muslims should take into consideration the values and customs of Muslims as a matter of respect, but not as rules or regulations imposed. Mutual respects sows love and promotes better relationship. This should be our culture and values which Malaysians from all the various races and religious belief ought to embrace. Let's work towards a Malaysia for Malaysians, and a truly Bangsa Malaysia. Let's promote mutual co-existence and share greater harmony. Let's put all those racial politicians and race-base political parties to shame and lead them to oblivion.

If PAS vice-president Haji Mohamad Sabu can show us this values, the Chinese and Indians can reciprocate and show to PAS members and all Muslims that we had similar virtues.

I think this one could be over spin.

Why need to belanja RM100,000 untuk "perbaiki"?

Is the MB official residence used by Koh Tsu Koon under such terrible dilapidated condition? If that is the case, then Koh Tsu Koon has greater virtues cause he kept silent staying in a dilapidated house for years:))))

It's ok lah, this New Government is still new, one week only mah, so still at infancy stage of spinnning:)))

Cakap mesti terang terang

Please don't get me wrong, my comment above has no malicious intention to LGE

I have due respect knowing and seeing myself the simplicity LGE and LKS living style.

CMBSS,

I come from the construction industry and I can assure you that RM100,000 is a small repair works project.

Pak Lah's official residence is only one year old when he takes over from Mahathir and he renovated it at a cost of RM20mil. Tajol Rosli's MB residence was renovated at a cost of RM10mil.

Furnitures in the MB residence is itself more than RM1.5 - 2.0mil. Repairing toilets and bathroom will cost more than RM100,000.

thank you!

Sorry leh... i don't quite agree to save until like that. Anywhere below RM500k acceptable but RM10mil! cilaka... dia punya pak cetak wang kah?

Sometimes state leaders need to host foreign guests or investors. At least need to be presentable and comfortable enough.

What a big difference compared to some money-sucker MB like Khir Toyo. One refuse to spent RM100 000 while the other one spent RM40 million to built bungalows with clubhouse for its exco.

Anyway, i think the official house will have to be kept in a good condition at all times. You never know when you will need to host official guess.

Maverick SM said...

Leyaw,

When Khir Toyo renovates his MB residence years back, it costs more than RM10mil.

Maverick SM said...

Hasilox,

Leading by example is important. It shouldn't matter how much money as it's taxpayers money.

Mave, I think, Ah Koon's private lifestyle is more modest like his rich family's wealthy background, unlike the noveau-riche umno big guns there. I think Pennag activist BK Ong has a well documented video thing on their various private residences, e.g.

This is not to say he is not rich or is humble..the harm he did was to have overstayed his welcome and governed like a wimp via a neither here nor there party subservient to umno through and through.

LOL. great post. everything sounds so promising. :D how have you been uncle mave?

the title is misleading, i thot is like mr lim to keluar (his own cheque book) rm100, 000 - of course don wan lah. but when read in details, then the story is mr lim din want to use state fund 100,000. sounds reasonable....

should say "mr lim avoid using rm100,000 state fund"

I agree with cakap mesti bikin. In his lame attempt to paint such a great picture of LGE, MAverick forgot that the previous CM stayed there and bear with all the lubangs for years and he didnt talk about it, he didnt invite reporters over to this house where he will wear a boxer and showed the delipidating house to the reporters for them to print about it the next day, he didnt spend a sen of the rakyat`s money.

So MAv, who deserves the honour now? The previous CM or the current CM. Hmm could be a drama so that later on he could spend and thus wont be seen as extravagant too.

HEY, if you need to spend to repair the house, repair it. All these talks/condemnation about others spending money, were all the repairs required and necessary? Dont look and listen from afar without knowing the real facts.

lucia said...

yeah i was wondering too... if all along the ex CM can stay in the house, why not the present CM? ok granted that the house need repairs but he can still stay inside without repairs, i.e. to say the repairs are not necessary, if he don't want to spend the rakyat money.

OTOH if repairs are really necessary, i'm sure the rakyat don't mind if money are spent on repairs... BUT not extravagant repairs of course.

Whether renovation merited or rakyat's money to be spent - the underlining principle is that Thou shall not spent rakyat's (Ah Kong's) money unnecessary.

That's the bottom line when you are custodian of the rakyat's money.

Every sen spent must be well spent and accounted for.

Renovation are much to do with the living habit of the inhabitants.
For a CM to feel at home, a renovation adjusting to this is unavoidable to make him and his family "at home".
This should be in a more standard form of Fringe Benefits even to other senior staffs of any Government or even company.
To keep the Capable and Ethical around!

As "Boss of the Government", people should give reasonable terms to "Public Servants" and not asking "Public Servants" to get via other illegal means. This is the basis concept of fighting corruption in Singapore and Hong Kong.

Just ensure they are reasonable, open and transparent!
Make it a rules!!

A Good Government is to spend wisely and efficiently and not just to hold back money.

The Public Work Department should send a Surveyor to check and report what should be necessary at least to keep the CM residency fit, including their habitual adjustment.
So from an Engineering point of view, the renovation are to be proposed and accepted!

Let Professional does their work before CM should adopt!

As leyaw said, the Residency should not only be considered as home for CM but could also be as Reception for Guest of the Government! (if applicable).

Haha ... I think PAS and DAP are on the right track to bolster each other's public image by making a big show of mutual admiration and respect. And why not, considering that they really have to work doubly hard to lay to rest the deep-seated fears and suspicions between both parties' traditional supporters so that bigger success could be achieved in GE13.

What they badly need now is access to MSM and not just the Harakah & Rocket.

it is a shame for the rakyat to put its chief minister in a "dilapilated" house. either the govt spend the money or get some donor to get the CM state house up and running.

I think someone should tell the CM to move back there, for the sake of the rakyat & state.

cant imagine CM entertaining Bill Gate in his current house.

Wake up! Dont be penny wise and pound foolish!!!

I believe this is a spin story here. Hope more constructive stories like how the govt is going to help the needy coming soon

LGE - wherever you or family choose to stay or when you are travelling, please ensure you are safe. One can never be too careful.

I agree with some of the comments - if renovation is merited, the rakyats (except BN supporters of course) who gave you that vote will surely not bemoan or begrudge the expenditure.

And, I think you need not fear being compared to KTK. For those who wants to compare you with KTK - they should compare you with Khir Toyo, Abdollah Badawi. Hokkien saying "lang pi lang kisi lang" literally translates into there is no comparison between people.

frugal? you must be kidding or living in MARS for a long time.
ask the Ong dynasty, the Lim dynasty, the Botox and Samy family how much of raw land and timber concessions have been awarded to their family and cronies? if they dare to swear that they have not received any, I will accept pigs can fly and the MBs from BN will be frugal and careful with rakyat's money.

Maverick SM said...

Wits0,

I'm not sure about KTK lifestyle but I know him as a humble man.

Chloe,

Hi Chloe, you had been absent for a long time. I'm fine.

Denzook,

The repair is not going to be $100,000. It is more likely to cost some $500,000 or more if the whole house is to be renovated.

Warrior2,

I did not paint the picture of LGE or trying to spin this issue. It was a publiched text of Mohamad Sabu of PAS in the Harakah. So are you saying the PAS leaders are lying?

I am far certain of your biases and your hypocritical comments. You had acted to portray me as someone who spin for a living while you had difficulty to accept the truth of the spinnings of NST and the MSM and I can assure you that I do compile quite many of those spins as a record in my information system.

The repair issue was brought up by Mat Sabu, and not by LGE to paint a "holier than thou" image. So, read with wisdom and not with wicked eyes.

Maverick SM said...

Lucia & Gan,

Probably the house is in urgent need of repair and since election is near, KTK may want to wait till the election is over before deciding on the renovation works.

The roof is leaking and needs urgent repair. LGE may felt that he wants to work and perform and this is his priority as he is uncertain of the economic health of the state.

Sharing,

The PWD had done it's survey and in fact had proposed on the repair works which probably would cost some RM500,000 or more.

Anak Merdeka,

I firmly believed that the BR will prove far more efficient in the management of the state resources.

See Fei,

It's not dilapidated; but it is in urgent need of repair.

Dear Cakap Mesti Bikin Siap Siap and all fellow bloggers,

There is no spin in this story. It's not that Koh Tsu Koon stayed in a dilapidated house and never asked for it to be repaired.

He didn't stay in the CM's official residence during his tenure but stayed in his own house in Hillside, Tanjung Bungah - a fairly modest house.

Hence, I'm not surprised that the official residence is really in need of repairs.

lucia said...

in that case, as i said, if the repairs are really necessary, then LGE should call for repairs. he was talking about open tenders... what better way than to start at his own official residence.

call for tenders to do the repair works, and try to get the cheapest repair (but not too cheap as to compromise on the bad materials lah). publish for everyone to see what repair works will be going on and how much it will cost - transparency, see.

the rakyat wouldn't fault him of using rakyat's money if he did everything in the open.

MAVERICK, Like I have stressed before,I am nobodys toy and I comment on things written in blogs.

The first part of your article is ofcourse your lift of Mat Sabu`s quotation. BTW YOU ARE NAIVE to think that PAS leaders dont lie!

But it is the second part of your article that says a lot what you were trying to do. To paint a good pic of LGE and thrash the BN leaders. Whats the point of this article then if not to spin?

Anonymous said...

As I said before, THERE IS NO SPIN.
You guys are all probably sitting at your PCs in KL and writing all your comments without knowing the facts of the situation.

I am a Penangnite, staying a few roads from Koh Tsu Koon's private house in Tg Bungah and just like many Penangnites, know that Koh never stayed at the official residence and is probably never aware of its condition and the need for repairs. SO WHAT GUAN ENG SAID IS TRUE AND HE IS NOT TRYING TO PORTRAY HIMSELF AS SOMETHING THAT HE IS NOT.

Can you guys stop all this crap and give the new CM a chance.

Anonymous said...

Guys,
ASFAIK, Only the late Wong Pow Nee stayed in the Official Residence during his CM tenure. After that, Lim Chong Eu, KSK all never stayed there anymore, but used it more for official function (like CNY open houses, etc). Couple of years ago, The Governor stayed there for a while when His residence (Seri Mutiara) under renovation.

Aiyah, my old mum's house is is the same area with KTK's in Hillside, T.Bungah and he will be using the old hill road to go to Komtar, using his outriders to ask taxpayers to gve way. He may lead a frugal and humble life but most of the companies will use his wife's interior decoration companies to collect their dues. Also his personal secretary has a PR company that all companies need to use to host state and private functions that feature KTK.

Now you know why we booted him out of state and parliament including all his cronies who sit in the MPPP.
