National Service food poisoning again

Sixty-seven National Service trainees from the Barracuda camp in Setiu Agro resort, here, developed stomachaches believed to be caused by due to food poisoning on Thursday, barely a week after nine trainees from the same camp suffered the same ailment. Fourteen trainees were warded in the Setiu Hospital, while 53 received outpatient treatment. Four food handlers at the camp also received outpatient treatments at the same hospital.

The food was catered from outside, as the camp's canteen had been closed after the May 23 incident when four of the trainees were warded for food poisoning.

It is also learnt that the chicken served during lunch was too spicy while the rice was not fully cooked.

Najib, how's your National Service Programme? Death of more than 20 trainees and many more food poisoned.

Is this another ketuanan thing?

We though ALL NS camps serves HALAL food which is supposedly to be clean & nitritious to the body?
It was also in all contracts to all NS operators!
Just see how the big clowns dismiss this as mere and minor incidents. Hey Press media people, just keep track of this kinds of food poisoning thing and you will be shocked to get statistics. By now it is almost a kid get food poisoning everyday !!!!!!That's Halal food for you. Maybe E'coli is 'Halal"

According to rumours which might very well turn out to be true, the hostel food operators are subjected to very late payments by the NS Dept. Therefore, it does not come as a shock that these operators need to squeeze the maximum profits by obtaining the cheapest ingredients in their food preparations. Hence all these nonsense such as unhygenic and contiminated food being served to the poor but expendable trainees.

remind me stupid ad that girl says the food is nice !

damn shame on her ..... the ad showed her face smiling eating the food ......

Halal Vs Hygienic Food

I've to add to Talking Birds comment. Halal food does not equate to hygienic food.

From my observation, almost all food poisoning cases occurs in eatery serving halal food, be it at the primary or secondary schools, even at the uni level.

There's a very valid reason for these occurances, as put forward by Syed Ali Akbar in his book "Malaysia & the Club of Doom"
It all boils down to the mentality of the food handlers! Children who are raised without proper education on cleanliness grows up with little concept of food hygiene & when these cohort becomes food handlers/canteen operators many of this childhood deficiencies are transposed into their working manners vis-a-vis food hygiene!

A case in point:-
The food poisoning case in International Islamic Universiti Malaysia. The canteen facilities was top notch with latest electrical appliances & food serving equipment yet after the food poisoning outbreak was reported, health official found traces of e-coli in the cooked food!

The crux of the matter is that you can give them the best of facilities & equipments but if their mentality does not change, sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, we will hear of more cases of food poisoning in the near future!

Trainees who contracted lifelong-diseases such as jaundice and hepatitis through unclean food/drinks in NS camps should sue Najib and Lee lam thye

Thanks for the explanation. I was trying to go in depth about the equation of HALAL vs FOOD POISONING ISSUE, particularly so because I study about food for my degree. But apparently u explained it better than i could. It had nothing to do with it being halal or not, so that anon before you wanting to pick on Halal issue just for the fun of it, and risk getting flamed by our Muslim friends, get ur DARN FACTS RIGHT first!

Birds Talking,

The food poisoning is unrelated to Halal; of course the food is Halal as there are Muslims who are consuming.

All food must be hygienic; irrespective of Halal.

Denzook,

That was ad; that's ad.

Qwerty,

I had observed food poisoning in Chinese Hawkers and also Indian eateries too. Let's leave the Halal word aside and stress on hygiene issue.

The issue is that there is no one responsible to check the quality of the food preparation and the caterer is at liberty to do as he deem fit.

Sandyow,

I think we should not pick on the word Halal to equate with Hygiene or other aspect as Halal means it is suitable for the consumption of the Muslims; it does not violate the Muslims' covenant. The opposite is Haram which means "Forbidden" and it is not just food and consumables; it include behaviors and actions.

Ling Ling Chatt,

Please don't go to S. Africa as my buddy BayiSingh has left that place. You may consider Timbuktu which is safer.

Hello Taikor SM,

I said "almost all"
I've had the runs from Hainannese chicken rice once. Good way to lose some weight pronto!

See.., my take is this, if we want to minimise the problem of food poisoning then we need to start with the biggest contributors. A quick search at emedia's archive for the period 01/01/07~30/05/08 resulted in 35 cases of food poisoining. Only 3 cases were out of the norm. 1st case, from a deli chain in OUG. 2nd case occured at SRK(T) Kapar & the 3rd case which was fatal came from a George Town pasar malam burger!

The second observation I've made is that most cases of food poisoining occurs at places where the clients are considered as captured market ie. Schools, hostel, training centres, social functions etc.

We seldom hear of cases from independent eateries. restaurant, fastfood joint etc.

So Taikor SM,those are the sad facts!

Don't-lah shoot me!

Ling Ling Chatt,

No go Magnolia; go Timbuktu; very safe there.

Qwerty,

You are right to say that most cases of food poisoning occurs at places considered as "captured market". This is because we can pin-point the food as there are quite a few people who get "poisoned" by the food.

However, in restaurants and foodstalls the individuals go home after eating and should they have food poisoning they just go to the clinic for treatment and Malaysians seldom take such issues to court or make a big issue out of it unless it is grievious bodily harm.

I won't shoot you, qwerty; you are a nice person and friendly but I must shoot facts...hehehehehe

what do you think would be the best measure to curb such an issue, mave? i mean, we've all been talking about it, complaining, pointing fingers and such.. but at the end of the day its a solution we need. if not more people will die. and terminating NS is not the way to go, imho. i know people who gained a lot out of it.. we shouldn't deny the rest its benefits. what do you say, mave?

Maverick SM said...

Phillix,

First and foremost, what is the objective of NS? It was originally intended to achieve social integration. But the nation is not desire of a Bangsa Malaysia; so what social integration are we talking about? If the majority cannot accept meritocracy and equality, then the fundamentals is in itself flawed.

That said; if the govt wants the NS, it must parlay a plan which takes into consideration the availability of resources, such as competent trainers and administrators; they must have a procurement system that has an effective and adequate evaluation system on acquiring the outsource services such that the service providers and vendors are selected based on quality and efficiency.

The truth is, even the caterer is a sub-sub-sub contractor.

The dysfunction is largely due to pillages and pilferages. The trainers are incompetent and disorganized; the organizers and administrators are more focused on cari makan and under-table.

For as long as corruption is ingrained in a culture, meritocracy, competency and integrity cannot never exist.

Solution? Set up a procurement system that ensures clean, fair and competent providers, vendors and trainers. Engage a professional audit team to supervise and act against those who deviates and fails and corrupt.

Suggestion: Let Petronas team run the show; as far as Malaysian corporations are concerned, Petronas still is the best administrators and have a system of management that is capable to perform; they practice risk management, quality management and have a good procurement system. No other GLC has my vote; neither Khazanah or KLIAC.
