Refugees at Embassies

Zimbabwean Opposition leader seek refuge at Dutch Embassy

Zimbabwe's opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has turned to the Dutch embassy in Harare for refuge, fearing for his safety after pulling out of a presidential poll.

Mr Tsvangirai, of the Movement for Democratic Change, did not request asylum but had "come to stay because he was concerned about his safety", shortly after announcing on Sunday his withdrawal from the election.

Malaysian de facto Opposition leader seeks refuge at Turkish Embassy

PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, who said he feared for his life, has sought refuge at the Turkish embassy in Kuala Lumpur this morning.

He went to the embassy at 6am and according to PKR vice-president Azmin Ali, he would be there "indefinitely".

The following is his full statement released at 5.30pm:

I am issuing this statement from within the embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Kuala Lumpur.

I was transported to the embassy earlier this morning fearing that my personal safety was in danger. I thank all those who offered to assist me in this time of need and am grateful to the Turkish ambassador for extending an invitation to seek refuge within the embassy.

Since the March 8 election, numerous credible sources from within the government and military intelligence have advised me that certain agents from within Barisan Nasional leadership have initiated plots to cause harm to me or my family or my supporters.

I have been told that my assassination has not been ruled out as means to subvert the people's will and bring an end to the transformational changes taking place in Malaysia.

Notwithstanding the threats which are intended to silence my voice, I intend to make public new evidence implicating that Inspector-General of Police Musa Hassan and Attorney-General A Gani Patail engaged in criminal acts of fabricating evidence in cases launched against me in 1998.

The allegations that have been made against me on Saturday are nothing more than a replay of the events which transpired in 1998 when I was sacked from the office of the deputy prime minister, jailed and beaten, and then charged and convicted by a kangaroo court for crimes which I never committed.

This charade was orchestrated by a corrupt Barisan Nasional leadership which made use of the entire apparatus of the state power including its control of the judiciary, the police force, and its grip on the mainstream media.

These actions are being repeated today to undermine the forces of reform and renewal which were unleashed in the March 2008 election.

I would like to assure my family, friends and supporters in Malaysia that I am safe and remain committed as ever before to continuing the struggle for a free and just Malaysia.

Anwar Ibrahim

What a coincidence! Both believed and put their faith and trust in foreign embassies to protect them. It must mean something that is dead serious; they can't trust the police?

would you?

Turkey is the probably right choice. UK - I doubt it is safe as Mr Hippo could get his Mi6 Friend to C4 the hole UK Embassy, and neither Russian Embassy safe as well as Malaysian piloted MiG30 could crasshhhhhh on top of it with its C4-C5-C6 and all the CCCC bombs together.

Other than Turkey, Indian Embassy could be safe for Anwar as they see Ghandhi and Nehru in Anwar.

May GOD safe Anwar and all his family plus Supporters safe from the SORT-GEH-YAN.

Pui-key-Mack,

The Turkish PM is a close friend of Anwar. Every embassy is safe; I think so.

Artchan,

Did they police made themselves so untrustworthy? They are suppose to protect the public and the people in general...

Until 9.30 pm Saturday night Anwar was happy, laughing, joking, predicting BN's downfall. He was all over the country and the world, convincing everyone that he is PM by 16 September.

He becomes afraid only when a police report was made against him by a young man.

It should have been the 23-yr old accuser who should have been afraid for his life.

Anwar the oscar winner. Even before the police get a statement he has run away.

Anwar will direct his followers to organize street demos and form barricades. Just a repeat of 1998/99.

If the conspirators planted the boy in his or PKR's office it is not the conspirators fault or joy that someone planted something in the boy's backside.

a black eye in the prison by the very people who are supposed to protect u does not inspire much confidence on DSAI nor any one else... little wonder he ran to the Turkey embassy for protection. (Though it does look a tad of grabbing media attention.)

the flurry of action against RPK, SAPP Yong TL, and now DSAI does make one sit up and pay closer attention. the rules of the games have changed.

how come no one thought of pulling up the accuser to have a look at the 'site of the crime?' what did the good doctor say?

Maverick SM said...

Jefus,

I think this is another conspiracy theory at play.

this is a smart move by going into an embassy, this way the international media will be aware, and the issue will be brought to world level. soon there will be people around the world question about malaysia political, judistriction and police force, and call for just & fair trail is there is even one to begin with.

malaysia will be shamed in the process, so much for all the 'malaysia boleh records'. not that i like to see malaysia in this condition, but if something is not right, then we should see that the right things will done.

I think this is a whole conspiracy thingy... but whoever is conspiring to get rid of Anwawr is not very clever to use the same storyboard AGAIN! Sigh.. make la new plot, get a more hensem or pretty boy or 2, make more drama like boy look beaten up and have plenty of money in bank account, yadda, yadda, yadda.. that will keep all of us interested!

This is total madness!! I am speechless that there are people in Malaysia will stoop so low with such low class storyline...worse than those drama minggu ini production on RTM 1!! Kanasai!

Come on! Be a man, come out to face all allegations with a brave and open heart. You have much political clouts now compared with earlier case against you. Malaysians are not blind, we know the truth will surface, but neither we want any politicians to taint the image of our country by selfishly misuse any international platforms to fight for your 'yet to be proven' justice.

anwar is smart, he is hiding in embassy not cos he is really "scared for his life". it is a political strategy politican refuge used to get international attentions. where else is better to hide than in embassy?

for those who are sure he is guilty, and even dammed sure that the thing that is sticking out of the boy's ass is not his own breakfast. sorry but try not to slander anwar's good name before any evidence and we all know that "someone is guilty until proven guilty".

Bung Karno,

You had a good point. However, we do not know what he had in mind or what he had perceived the situation. The experience he had in 1998 must have been deep inside him and could have cause him much anxieties. I presumed if you were him and had perceived something insidious and alarming and threatening you would have done the same.

Kublaikhan,

I didn't hear about that; its scary if it's true.

Monster Mom,

You have a good point and I think the pain and agony of the experience in 1998 must have sink deep.

Malaysiantruly,

I do agree that he shoudl face reality. Altantunya came to Malaysia to seek justice and reality; what did she receive?

Jefus,

The game today is far insidious as can be incomparable.

Malaysian de facto Opposition leader seeks refuge at Turkish Embassy

After advise from Husin Lempoyang, now I understand why it must be Turkish Embassy. Read here especially last paragraph.

the gay pubs in istanbul not within his reach. unless you are implying that the turkey ambassador also fancy this sort of stuff.

hello guys,

I had quoted different information regarding about DSAI being refuge in the Turkey's embassador..checked it out.. and which one is truth? correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks.

"PUTRAJAYA, June 30 (Bernama) -- De facto Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is accused of sodomising an aide and is currently holed-up at the Turkish ambassador's residence in Kuala Lumpur, was never invited to the diplomat's home nor had he sought political asylum from the Turkish government.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Rais Yatim, after a meeting Turkish ambassador to Malaysia Barlas Ozener at Wisma Putra Monday, told reporters that the diplomat had clarified that Anwar was never invited to his house and that the opposition leader had gone there on his own accord.
"The Malaysian government accepts this explanation. Anwar is not at the ambassador's house as an asylum seeker but as a guest. It has just been less than 24 hours. If he stays there for a longer period then we might have to take a different stance. The question of political asylum too does not arise," he said.
Last Saturday Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, a 23-year-old special assistant of Anwar, lodged a police report alleging that he was sodomised by Anwar on Thursday at an apartment in Damansara Heights.
Early yesterday morning, Anwar took refuge at the residence of the Turkish ambassador, claiming that he had gone there because he feared for his personal safety after receiving death threats earlier in the week."

warrior2 said...

I agree with Bung KArno. He dissapeared into the turkish compound when the sodomy allegation is made known and not before!

He wasnt worried about the treats before but he is worried now just as the news came out!
Convenient? excuse?

Many have made thier mind up that this is conspiracy. I am wondering on what basis do these people made that conclusion.

Funny thin is, anything about anwar is fabrication but anything about najib (read petra) betul!

ANWAR THE GREAT BOLLYWOOD ACTOR!

One interesting outcome from this latest 'bontot' event is the cleverness of Anwar in diverting the criminal case against him. Anwar is known for his dramatisation of events, if he wants something or trying to get out of the mud. Another round of blaming the government i.e. police, AG, UMNO, BN, DPM, PM, etc for his crime against nature.

Remember the Baling case during his student days? Or the last trial - remember the arsenic poisoning? Remember the complaint about his back pain? Remember the dog collar that always stuck on his neck when he went to courts? Remember he moved about on wheel chair? Now no back pain or neck pain! He was cured as soon as he was released from jail!

Now the truth has come out, he went to the Turkish Embassy uninvited said the Turkish Ambassador. He just deposited himself there to get international attention. He got many friends outside Malaysia, who will believe him and make a strong outcry that his crime was fabricated. That's what Anwar wants.

By the way, who wants him killed? If that is the case, he should have been assassinated a long time ago! Even before the opposition could win many state governments in the last elections. Anwar is best described as the great Hindustani or Bollywood actor. Pity his wife Azizah, she has to defend Anwar because he is her husband although she knows Anwar inside out.

Death threats from whom I wonder..I'd think the government is abit far-fetched. Also think Saiful is in more danger than Anwar really.

Anonymous said...

I think none of us "familiar" with the game of politics wil see this and Zimbabwe as purely coincidental? what's this then, one way of destabilizing the country even further so that he can come out as a saviour?

Maverick SM said...

Siamangagap,

You may be right; and could be wrong too.

Vivek,

I think if you are in his shoes with the experience of 1998 you would feel threatened too. I do agree that Saiful also feels unsafe.

Dom,

The game is far more complex than the previous version of 1998.
