In Sabah, said Prime Minister Abdullah, the incidence of poverty had declined from 23% in 2004 to 16% in 2007. In Sarawak, meanwhile, poverty had declined from 7.5% to 4.2%.
Abdul Ghapur Salleh (BN-Kalabakan) asked the Prime Minister at the Parliamentary debate: "where did he get his statistics on the incidence of poverty in Sabah and Sarawak?"
Asking this question today, Abdul Ghapur Salleh said his figures on the matter derived from Sabah's Economic Planning Unit (EPU) differed from those cited by the prime minister.
Abdul Ghapur said the government should not seek to band about questionable figures to serve its 'pride' in its efforts to eradicate poverty.
"I do not know where the statistics were gotten from regarding Sabah," said Abdul Ghapur.
"I do not know where this 16% percent came from."
"Let's not utter and take pride in statistics that indicate poverty in Sabah and poverty in Sarawak have declined when we do not know the right statistics. We do not have the right statistics," he asserted.
Abdul Ghapur was also peeved with the announcements of billions of ringgit in development funds that have been allocated to Sabah and Sarawak when these two states still languish in poverty and backwardness.
"We do not want to be given billions (of ringgit) but see no positive action being taken ... We do not want the minister saying we have been given billions while not knowing where the billions of ringgit have gone," he said.
Describing the New Economic Policy (NEP) as having "failed" to improve the general lot of bumiputeras and having achieved "16 to 18 percent" of its planned targets, Abdul Ghapur said a new policy should be formulated with short-term aims that was more in sync with present circumstances instead of one that would take place for 30 or 40 years.
"The ones who formulated the NEP are not even here any longer. Formulate a policy for 5-10 years, only then can we see whether it fails or succeeds," said Abdul Ghapur.
The calling for bumiputera and Malay rights to be upheld need not mean that the rights of non-bumiputeras should be denied, Abdul Ghapur stressed.

Question: "Where did he get his statistics on the incidence of poverty in Sabah and Sarawak?"
Answer: The same way he got his answers which caused him to fail Introduction to Statistics 101 in university

CK,
That was exactly what was reported in the news and I just CnP.
Poverty is a blessing in disguise for BNatang reps. They love it after all it's not them who are poor.
GILAWANG
You have MPs like Bung Binatang who said that the Federal Gomen should not give any money the opposition states for development and is Sabah a Opposition State? We have this Pm always appearing to pluck figures from thin air and passing out bucketful of billions to develop corridors all over the country! On the ground the rakyat is screwed kau2 and with the stock market on its downward spiral it appears that more suffering is yet to come!
Gilawang,
You are probably right; for as long as they keep the Malays poor, they will continue to hold the power and make a few rich while sent a few malays traveling overseas to have fun in order to satisfy the crave and sentiments of some.
Raja Klentong in session. His brand of statistics don't need supporting. Since when has our PM klentong supported his statistics with concrete proof?
He knows he failed statistics in Uni years, but there are people gullible enough to believe him.....
Msiaman,
He was probably given those statistics by those little napoleon and thus himself become the klentong guy.
But sabah politicians talk too much...and no guts to take control of their own affairs and let AAB and gang continually bullshit them with promises.
Abdul Ghapur,,,,,pl no wayang for me.
what is the statistics that Ghapur Salleh has then? the race-based economic policies have really got to go. the few who hang onto it tooth and nail are the only ones who derive benefits from them, and incidentally, they're anything but poor
Ghafur must be sure of his own source/stats first before he questions the PM`s stats.
Sabah politician memang talk too much. They have their own responsibilities, why keep blaming others? Semua nak buat drama..
Artchan,
I think I disagree with your statement. It is not no guts; it is about the administration of a state, not a family and there are many factors that had to be considered. But I think Sabah politicians such as Ghapur and various others are now seeing the window of opportunities.
Tropical Storm,
Ghapur statistics is said to be derived from the State Statistic Dept; but I'm not sure unless it is published.
Gabdul Aphur,
Maybe you are right; but if you would consider the political situation and Umno's involvement in the State politics and control over their resources, then you can also understand why there is a need to talk about their plight.
Politics are not for the weak! Who is friends? Who is foes? only time can tell!
who is RPK working for?
Anwar... what is he up to?
The system didnt failed us, we failed to build a working system!
Sodomize cases are consider less important than a c4 murder but acted in such haste!
Drama Anwar? It seems 95% msian doesnt believe so
Sabah is so poor now, they still wanna play around with Sabahan mind! CRUEL
Edi,
You are right; politics are not for the weak; politicians not only must be strong and brave, they must also be creative and strategic.
Abu Bakar Ali,
Sabah politicians are takeing their opportunity because their cote now counts much towards the continuous survival of BN.
