Sept 16 press statement in full

The following is the statement given by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim at a 2pm press conference at the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya today:

Today, Malaysians celebrate Malaysia Day - the day our country became whole and our people become united. This day has a new meaning.

After years of struggle, after fighting against a system that is corrupt and unjust - we affirm that victory is finally at hand. Our vision of rebuilding this country and bringing its people together, as the founding fathers envisioned, is within reach.

The economy is in turmoil with runaway inflation and joblessness creating widespread discontent. Racial tensions have been rising, exacerbated by the propaganda spread in the government owned mainstream media. The administration has offered no vision to steer the nation out of this quagmire and there is manifest erosion in confidence in the current government.

We in Pakatan Rakyat believe we can save Malaysia from economic ruin and the dangerous politics of racism. We will do so prudently, legally and in doing so we will not jeopardise the security and stability of the country and the safety of its people.

We have received firm commitments from members of parliament in excess of the number required to form a new government, and our government will reflect the diverse make-up of Malaysian society.

It has been our concern to ensure a peaceful transition of power. We do not wish to see a repeat of what transpired in the Selangor and Perak state governments, where following the victory of Pakatan Rakyat on March 8, documents were shredded and removed by the outgoing administration.

We furthermore advise radical elements within BN against the abuse of state power to unlawfully harass and detain our supporters.

The immediate investigation by the ACA (Anti-Corruption Agency) of Yong Teck Lee after the announcement by SAPP (Sabah Progressive Party) of its intention to move a motion of no-confidence against Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is another example of the tactics we reject.

The use of the ISA, as has happened to MP Teresa Kok, would be an unlawful impediment to the transition process.

In light these serious concerns, yesterday leaders of Pakatan Rakyat sent a letter to the prime minister at 2.30pm requesting a meeting to discuss the future course of the nation's leadership and to seek his assurance on the following important matters:

1) That the BN shall not hinder or prevent their BN MPs from acting in accordance with their conscience, constitutional rights and independent judgment;

2) That the BN government shall not invoke the Internal Security Act to detain any of the MPs who will join Pakatan Rakyat, or any of the present 82 Pakatan Rakyat MPs;

3) That the BN government shall not invoke emergency or police powers, or suspend the constitution, or dissolve parliament in response to our intention to form a new government;

4) That the Barisan Nasional government shall not impose roadblocks and impede the MPs from gaining access to the House of Parliament and the institutions of government.

We believe the prime minister will share Pakatan Rakyat's concerns for the welfare of the people and security of the nation. We are confident he will ensure the BN will act constitutionally and democratically to ensure that the transition will be peaceful, and there will be no actions taken to sabotage the wishes of the people or play on racial tensions in the country.

We appeal to all quarters in Malaysian society to understand our intentions are for the betterment of Malaysian society. The mainstream media, in particular, should accept the reality of these historic times and report fairly, accurately and without bias. The irresponsible tact that is used by the media to obfuscate issues, attack opposition supporters and instigate racial tensions must end immediately.

Following our meeting with the prime minister, we intend to proceed within the framework established by the federal constitution in the formation of a new government, with the assent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

NOTE:

AFP quoted PAS treasurer Dr Hatta Ramli as having said that the opposition coalition would seek an audience with the king to seek a mandate to rule, should Abdullah reject the request for a meeting.

“The issue of the appointment of the prime minister and change of government is very much the role of the king,” Hatta said.

He claimed that the opposition now has the support of as many as 116 parliamentarians. This would mean 35 government defectors.

KIMHO8,

I think Agong has the wisdom to react affirmatively.

Maverick,

All we can do is pray.
Pray for the best for our country.
Without colours, religions and status. Truly Malaysia.

If Malaysian Cabaret Association & Girl&Rakan are not happy with what their bosses did. They should leave instead of stay back and wait. The problem is they can't let go their luxury political career life. They do not deserve the respect, pride and dignity by saying that they have serve the people well for all this time. The unbreakable golden rice bowl has tie them down tightly. A very good leash for a simple minded pet. Maybe we can't blame them but to blame the system and the society. A good individual mindset plays a very important role of life. Courage and justice will preserve the cycle of the human race.

When Abdullah says Anwar doesn't have the numbers, I think we need to believe in the opposite since his life has become to mean the "opposite". This is the man who told Zaid to go and "sleep" for 2 weeks. Note that Abdullah is known for sleeping on the job, so he thinks if everyone sleeps, then things will work out. Sheesh!

"I think Agong has the wisdom to react affirmatively." - yes, that will be reprimand anwar for creating disturbance and potential chaos and tell him to wait until ge 13 for power transfer ....

btw, 16 sept isn't really malaysia day, the formation of malaysia actually scheduled on 31 august 1963 but unfortunately it was derailed by some "ganyang malaysia" group. to save face, tunku set 16 sept coz it coincides with lky birthday, so 16 sept actually lky day too. which is why umno chose to ignore this date and celebrate 31 august instead. plus it saves 1 holiday, and more on country's productivity......

so you ppl save your wrath and please don argue with gov on 16 sept.....

KIMHO8,

I think MCA and Gerakan have roles to play in this political divisiveness and complexities. Let's observed the paradigm shift.

Ibrahim,

It's the mind game and it is the game of deception in the political context.

mavericky martin,

em! Awak memang ada kepala ...

No Choice,

I do agree with you.

Denzook,

Productivity? Save one day? You are so intelligent! I now observed that you lived in outer space.

I am not so sure but i think Anwar could be making a huge lie to order to attract defector. everyone is waiting for everyone else to defect, cos they also don't want to stick to a sinking boat.

If Anwar really has the defectors, why not just show the list. Have all the defectors in a press conference to declare their support to PKR.

It didn't happen yet, cos he is still waiting for more defectors, while playing a phycology game with BN.

just freaking make it happen already.... reading the mainstream makes me wanna vomit blood.

come 13th october when parlimen sittings commence, the 31 mps stand up and walk to oppos side and with "majority" MP demand speaker to allow motion no-confidence on PM and for him to resign and to elect dsai as new PM. the speaker, one of the frog, allows the motion, and dsai becomes new PM (and officially later in agong residence)

now this is scary thought..... i always say 16 sept is not possible, but "hint" for latter action...

Zewt,

Stay cool!

Denzook,

Sept 16 is just a date and an icon of change. The paradigm shift is moving into top gear and Pak Lah is now in-charge of the army.

Maverick,
Tak.
Dia cuma bagi lebih banyak alasan.
