DBP Patriotism
EDUCATION IN BAHASA MALAYSIA is prove of being NATIONALISTIC?
Ex-Director general of Dewan Bahasa Dan Pustaka, Datuk A. Aziz Deraman, claims that 10 universities in the country were in the process of teaching undergraduates all subjects in English, including Malay literature. Maybe, to make it more exciting to the Ministers, he should also alleged that Quran and Islamic studies are also to be conducted in English!
When Mahathir was PM, and the time when he made the decision to change the science and mathematic subjects to English, Aziz Deraman was DG of DBP; why did't he objected? During Mahathirs period, he was quite as a mouse but now after retiring, maybe, he is trying to draw some attention, probably he wants to be the ambassador to Iraq.
I wonder whether he would spent some time with the undergraduates and find out their ability to communicate in English - what a shame state we are in ?
In the age of globalization and liberalization, where global trade is the only way for organizations to survive, together with the speed of which information technology and the internet are changing the face of the world, Malaysian undergraduates are so weak in English that in years to comeby, they may have to work with Multi-National Corporations or even may have to work in other countries. As English is still the most widely communicated language internationally, and the internet is mainly English by nature, it is harmless and helpful that Malaysian Government should emphasize the need to prepare our graduates to a level of proficiency in a language that is used internationally such that they are marketable, and wanted in the global society. Yet we had a ex-DG, who have not been able to cope with the social, geographical and enviromental change that had taken place and therefore has found a way to cry Nationalisma with the language tool to pursue his personal dogmatism and bullshitology. This is what a single destructive narcissist could do, i.e more harm (not to himself and his family) but to the society at-large.
Maybe, his children is studying overseas or have graduated. At such, he has nothing to lose if the local university remains a backward yard for garbages. I still have children in school and university and I hope the Government will do something to enhance the childrens ability to master the English language so that they can be an asset to the nation and the world at-large, to the Globalized Universe where Survival belongs to the fittest and competent. Communication is the most crucial element in the world of commerce of which we earn a living in order to survive, Cik Aziz!
