DRB-HICOM THE NEXT TARGET BY SYED MOKHTAR
Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al Bukhary is bidding for an 18% stake in DRB-Hicom Bhd for $520.7 million or at $3.35 per share. DRB shares is currently trading at $1.88. at such Syed Mokhtar is prepared to pay a premium of $1.47.
Why does Syed Mokhtar wants to pay so much? There must be a catch!
Business management doctrine is usually - "Buy Low Sell High."
Is Syed Mokhtar's doctrine the reverse - Buy High Sell Low? or is he seeing something other businessmen are blinded? or,
Is he going fast and big enough so that the doctrine of - "Too Big To Fail" will shield him corporate disaster that had engulf Halim Saad and Tajuddin Ramli.
The proposed acquisition is from the estate of the late Tan Sri Yahaya Ahmad. Is Tan Sri Yahaya’s wife and children forced to sell those stakes or was Tan Sri Yahaya only a proxy for Mr.X?
The fastest rising Malaysian businessman since the fall of Halim Saad has interests in almost every industry from Power, Seaports, construction, property development, waste water management to Hotels & Manufacturing, defence technologies, etc. It also includes Sugar refinery, rice, Books retailing, Construction, Airport management, Railways, except coffin and graveyards.
Syed Mokhtar owns the Al-Bukhary Corporation which controls:
1. Pernas International Holding (20%),
2. Seaport Terminal (90%) which owns Johor Port (51%) and Port of Tanjung Perlepas (70%),
3. Prai Power, SKS Ventures and Impian Teladan (power generation companies). Impian Teladan, a wholly owned subsidiary of Al-Bukhary owns MMC (19.9%) and Malakoff (22.7%).
4. Puncak Semangat is also a 100% subsidiary of Al-Bukhary.
5. Padiberas Nasional Bhd (Bernas) of which Syed Mokhtar has a 15% stake..
6. In the sugar industry, he has stakes in Gula Padang Terap and Tradewind (M) Bhd who owns Central Sugar Refinery Sdn. Bhd (a subsidiary of Pernas International Holdings).
7. In construction, he has MMC Engineering & Construction and Tronoh Mines Malaysia Bhd, a subsidiary of MMC which controls IJM Corp Bhd (20%) and Zelan (M) Sdn Bhd (100%). The IJM stake was purchased at $383 million from IGB, and Zelan was acquired at a sum of $140 million from Chang Si Fock, Tan Cheng Hua and Lam Kar Cheong.
8. In airport management, he controls Senai Airport through his flagship company Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn. Bhd. (SATS) which was bought from Malaysia Airport Bhd. for $80 million.
9. Through Jalinan Inspirasi he bought MPH Ltd’s regional bookstore chain for $93 million.
Will he be considering the buying of Telekom Malaysia, Maxis, Khazanah, Maybank, & Putrajaya & parliament house in the near future?
Probably, the only business that he has exception would be the management of Mosques, temples, Coffins & Maintenance of Graveyard.
