Ronnie Liu - the disingenius at work

UNMO Youth claimed an article published on the DAP web site belittling the roles played by Tunku Abdul Rahman and others in fighting for independence has set off a controversy. UMNO Youth wants an apology from DAP and the author Ronnie Liu sanctioned.

The report titled “The real fighters for Merdeka” was posted on DAP’s web site on Sept 1, 2005. The para that invokes ire: “Contrary to what they have learned from textbooks, UMNO leaders were not the real fighters for independence … UMNO leaders were treated as friends of the British … One may argue that the Alliance leaders were not the ones that put up real sacrifices for the Merdeka struggle. On the other hand, many of the real freedom fighters were thrown into jails.

“It must be pointed out that without the struggle and sacrifice made by these freedom fighters and the pressure mounted by the CPM, the British would not have been willing to cooperate and negotiate with the Alliance leaders for an Independence.

While I can observe that Ronnie is trying to spin a point to reflect the negative struggle to justify a positive hypothesis, Ronnie has proven himself to be utterly disingenious and his contention can be looked at as a form of contempt and a disregard of the positive efforts contributed by the Alliance party and pressure groups that convinced the British that it is about time that Independence should be granted to the people of this country.

The sad point to note is that as members of the opposition, Ronnie should not oppose an accepted axiom for the sake of belittling it's opponent. There are relevant events and knowledge which must be looked at in a positive light for the good of the nation as a whole. You do not praise a so-called "Freedom fighters" to justify and belittle the efforts of the masses. For this, we must respect the efforts of the Alliance Party which had represented the various communities and races in the country and of which their efforts had brought about the Independence of the nation.

This I have to advice Ronnie: Tho' you may be looking at a different perspective to justify your contention, or I would prefer to call it a 'hypothesis' of which you may not have intent of contempt, you do not write in such a way as to glorify the negative to justify the positive efforts. What you had written may be acceptable in an academic exercise as a form of critical analysis, but not in an article good for journalism. It is my honest suggestion that if you do not withdraw your article, you should make an effort to re-write it in a more positive perspective without disrespects and derecognition of the positive efforts played by the Alliance Party, of which you may not like to glorify. But the truth is the truth, and you do not wrong a right, for the sake of your political alignment. To all members and leaders of the opposition parties, please remember who you are. Please Remember, we are all Malaysians, and we must respect that. Do not glorify our "enemy" as a means to justify your end.

MCA Youth secretary-general Wee Ka Siong hit back at Liu: “I do not think that it is right to give any recognition to CPM. This is totally wrong,” He said. The independence of Malaya was obtained through the positive efforts of the Alliance party. This I agree!

Dear Ronnie, the debate will do no good for the people of the nation as a whole. Be pragmatic and wise. Re-write your antithesis and use wisdom and be humble as a leader of the people of the nation; not just DAP. Do not mould yourself to be an oxymoron. I believe you can do better and you must win respect of the people of the nation as a whole, including all the Malays who can be construed as your brethens. Don't act asinine.
