MyKad Billion Digit Problem

After spending multi-millions, the government was fully satisfied that they had made a good buy. MyKad was launch to integrate all the information necessary of every person called Malaysians or Malaysian resident. The Government's plan was to identify all Malaysians identity through their MyKad which will be used for their passports, driving licences and possibly even bank accounts.

Now, the ministry was dumbfounded when they discovered that the MyKad number in passports has hit a snag as local and foreign immigration scanning machines can only read a maximum of nine digits. The MyKad has 12-digit numbers.

Deputy Home Affairs Minister Datuk Tan Chai Ho said today the inability of the machines had forced the Government to reassess the plan.

"If the present MyKad numbers are incorporated into passports, immigration officers will then have to manually key in the data, which will then slow down immigration clearance," Tan said. Tan said the ministry had sought the assistance of information technology experts to find a solution. "We are bent on overcoming the problem," he said.

When the I.T. company who was awarded this project, didn't they know about it? This is a multi-million dollars contract and they don't know? So now, the government had to award a new multi-million contract to undo and redo the whole system configuration.

Great business opportunities again. Cheerio, and get on the bandwagon.
