What is happening? Paradigm shift? It must have sent quivers into the spines of Pak Lah's government. Could it signal an on-coming tide of change and dissatisfaction of the current regime? Possibly!
In the words of Mahathir himself, he has not seen such mammoth and open state of corruption in his 22 years as the PM. (New Straits Times, 26th May, 2005)
Mahathir was quoted as saying corruption is becoming a culture in Malaysia. More specifically, corruption is almost at the "above the table" level, with a significant number being involved.
Or in his own words: "Where are we now? We are slowly breaking through the ceiling. We are slowly emerging ‘above the table’, and when that occurs, I hope I won’t be around."
Mahathir acknowledged that corruption existed during his time, but it was all 'under the table'. Now, just 18 months after he has left, corruption is now emerging 'above the table'. Mahathir said he will have nothing to do with corruption that has gone worse in the last 18 months or so.
In The Star article published on 11th Dec 2005, entitled Dr M: Stand up and speak out, Mahathir call on the people to “stick their necks out” and speak up if they see something obviously wrong.
“My fear is that if people fail to think and criticise that which is wrong, then the society will rot,” he said during the question-and-answer session after giving a talk on Current Issues in Malaysian Politics.
Dr Mahathir sadly noted that Umno was not behind him when he exposed “the abuse of power” of the current regime and its oligarch.
Dr Mahathir said the tendency to not criticise even when things went wrong could be due to Barisan securing over 90% of the parliamentary seats in last year's general election.
“I believe that the country should have a strong government but not too strong. A two-thirds majority like I enjoyed when I was prime minister is sufficient but a 90% majority is too strong. We need an opposition to remind us if we are making mistakes. When you are not opposed you think everything you do is right,” he said.
Would we be seeing much more insidious change? A change for the better or worse?
It's will be a far greater challenge for Pak Lah now than ever.
Does it signal good sign or should we be prepared for the worse to happen?
Adapting the phrase from Lord Denning:
"No longer is the dissatisfaction an incoming tide flowing up the estuaries of Malaysia. It is now like a tidal wave bringing down our sea walls and flowing inland over our fields and houses - to the dismay of all."
