Proton Malaysia renamed EuropeStar

Proton is set to conquer the Chinese car market!

The first batch of 384 units of Gen.2 cars, rebranded as EuropeStar , was shipped yesterday.

NST reported that a total of 1,600 units of Gen.2 are scheduled to be shipped to China by the end of next month. (NST BizNews, pg36).

However, the StarBiz reported that Proton has shipped 408 units to date, and will be shipping 1,500 units monthly over the next 20 months to fulfill the order of 30,000 units.

What a great sales. Lest we forget, Tengku Mahaleel also shipped thousands of Proton cars to Middle East, all sold on consignments. It was not clear whether any car was unsold and how much was the writedown.

Meanwhile it was reported that Toyota produced a total of 9.36 million cars for 2007, surpassing GM Motors who managed 9.30 million. This made Toyota the new leader of the automobile industry.

It was also reported that Hyundai will be spending US$11b in 2008 to upgrade facility and raise production.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd will be cutting the price of its cars from 192,124 rupees (RM8.85 = 100 rupees) to about 100,000 rupees (about RM8,850).

China's Chery QQ is sold at RMB29,000 (about RM14,000) and Chery is projected to roll out it's 2 millionth car by 2009. Chery rolled out its first car in Dec18th 1999 and by 2007 August, it rolled out it's first millionth car.

Can Proton compete in the global automobile market? We are Malaysians, and as Malaysian, Boleh is our doctrine; we can, kita mesti boleh, Proton Boleh! What matters is Boleh, nothing else.

But why named our car EuropeStar? Aren't Proton proud to be MalaysiaStar or BumiStar or MalayStar; why Europe? Aren't we changing to Western culture? Isn't this anti-Malaysian and betrayal of our own identity? Where are those UMNO MPs who talks so much about patriotism, nationalism and traitorism?

Reaaly cann't understand these GLC leaders' mentallity.
If they are malu to use BumiStar or MalayStar or for fear of being unsaleable/unbankable, at least they could use other "viable" names such as AsiaStar (Malaysia truely Asia mah!) or LotusStar (It's Lotus technology!).

I will see if there are any Gen2 here. Anyway, their own QQ cannot sell also la. Those who can afford cars will not buy cars like QQ.

hmmmm... europestar...the boleh nation in its quest to con the most lethal conman nation of all???

Mave,
You're right; it sounded very queer. Is proton trying to link its cars to Europe and hinting Germany; signifying quality, drivibilty, durability and thus steering away from the price war it cannot win? Whatever any international endeavour is praise worthy. Syed Zainal seemed an action and market oriented man. I have full support for him

'EuropeStar' eh?
Same shit, different name!

for proton, ego or survival? for once, common/business sense prevail & swallow their pride they must...

Selling with the Shadow of Worries!!
----------------------------------
Cars sold be backed up by steel and accessories to go.
Does this remind the many losses of steel that was involved?
Or, where came the accessories with price to compete?
Or, the management team has magic in the scene?
How can they supply the car at the price?
with subsidy by local buyers or Stock owners' sides?

Are they selling cars or surprises??

Why the word Europe there? Isn't that misleading?

Those poor CHinese over in the mainland might mistook Europestar as the same calibre as BMW.

Maverick SM said...

Gukita,

I do agree with you on Syed Zainal on the image building which will be queer if we remember the WV partnership issue. Furthermore, Europe's image is more towards luxury cars and uniqueness such as sporty and extreme comfort. Proton is still in the mass market segment competing with low cost and compact version.

There is another point: Syed Zainal has not alleviated the poor quality vendors and high price parts as yet.

helen,

Then they might get a case of mis-representation?

They might have to show a map or
even satellite photo that Malaysia is so close!
May be again in Hague?

Challenge is always an inspiration of wisdom,
if the mind and soul is there!!

Bolehland is an empty cup to have many things filled without overflow!
It got a flush!
operated under no flash!!

Maverick SM said...

Beeranyone,

I do agree with you if Proton is branding itself in the image of European cars; but I shudder!!!

Sharing,

We bear the brunt of Proton's uncompetitiveness in our domestic market.

Helen,

It's ok as the Chinese will need to learn.

When the Potong Sakai first appear, patriotism was used as an excuse to sell it locally. Now that shoddy patriotism is discarded for monetary gain when it suits 'em.

Mave,
I talked to the Proton agent quite regularly because I owned a 2005 Proton Waja and despite some problems on local parts I love the car's drivibility and value-for-money and am looking forward to future power upgrade. Syed Zainal seemed determined to do house cleaning and non performing vendors now know they are in the ditch list. That sounds business acumen, not politics. Parading the Lotus badge is good business too.

Maverick SM said...

Gukita,

I had a number of their managers who are my students. They said the same thing; but even they are not confident of the cleaning processes because many of the vendors are "royalties" and protected and powerful species who the managers "feared" are too good for Syed Zainal to touch them.

Maverick SM said...

Gukita,

I still own a Saga and a Wira. My Saga is already 6 years old, and my Wira is 4 years old, and both are still in good working condition. But I must admit that it is only value for money because of the high duties imposed on imported cars. Take away the duty; I would not buy them.

If anyone go down to those mega bookstore, you will find there is a new trends of book swamp the management section : Toyota story, GM story that help them turn red to black, and many other manufacturing that use not so common "common sense" to reach the market, cutting cost without cutting valuable people.

Compare to Toyota,GM,VW,etc, the biggest challenge of Proton are still the "untouchable" vendor. It seems this "untouchable" vendor refuse to learn something to make money in a typical business way but continue to leech Proton.

Actually there is a quick exit for those "untouchable" : buyout the whole business. Afterall, this untouchable umno only want to seek a heavy bone life.

Admit it, few of us really wishes Proton well after the 20+ years of cutting our throats. If I've to replace my old crate with a local product like Proton, there is definitely inner angst.

Gukita said...

Mave,
I owned a Wira too. Have owned 2 versions of Corolla, have used Volvo and Honda. I have travelled East West Highway regularly (wweekends) with my Waja for more than 1 year. Despite its modest pedigree, I still consider its drivibility better than many of those up market models and hence better value for money even without the duty advantage.

Anonymous said...

"drivibility and value-for-money "

That's an artificial and relative situation. The jugular has been cut to enrich a few and this is what hurts and for a very long time too.

Maverick SM said...

Moo_t,

I don't think buying out the vendor business is wise. For all you know, the vendors are in deep shit, and you soon find out that these vendors have to pay tributes all these years to the Oligarchy.

Maverick SM said...

wits0,

I do not agree with you. I love to buy Proton, but Quality is the issue. However, it has improved with Waja. But Gen.2 is still problematic. Perdana is also problematic.

Maverick SM said...

Gukita,

Since you have driven a Honda, would you say your Waja is better? I don't think so as I had a Honda too.

I also has a Kia Spectra which is much better than my Wira.

Maybe, I can say the Waja is better than the other Protons or Kancil. It can't compare with Nissan or Toyota. I agree that the Waja can be better than the previous Corolla but not the current such as Vios.

constant drama said...

WTF bitches? I drive a GEN-2. Not a damn EuroStar. Eh damn embarassing lah.

Made in Bolehland, say lah made in Bolehland.

Maverick SM said...

Constant_Drama,

Very sorry, your's a MalaysianStar; In China, it's a EuropeStar and it's made in WonderLand, not BolehLand.

we r proud to tell the world that proton Wira (1996) is Malaysian car?
but is it?
people know that from Saga to Wira r base on Mitsubishi car manufacture..

1. y r we proud of something that aren't ours?
2. on Mitsubishi site, aren't they felt un-patriotism when Malaysian change their car's name to Malaysian name?

Get my point..?

The thing is, y bother what name it was given for the matter of fact that people already know who's car it was. As long as Mitsubishi get the profits, go ahead, change what ever name we wist to..

n now, it's our turn to produce, sell n get profits. Change the name, it is still Malaysian...
people will still know that fact...

My input:
Why not name the car 'ProblemStar' or 'RosakStar'

I own a Wira and you know what? This junk of mine should be renamed as 'CrapStar', with compliments from Proton of course. So many quality problems and repairs, thanks to Proton. Quality stinks so much that it is worse than Indah Water septic content.

About the vendors... as usual lah.. It not how good the vendor's performance is, but who the vendor is.... Malaysia Boleh style... macam macam boleh.... apa pun boleh punya ma..

What a stupid blogger. i think u know nothing bout automotive industry? Proton sell the Gen2 to youngman. It is Youngman that created the europestar brand in china.Better check first before post if not ur credibilty will be at stake especially the unnecesary racial words

and if u want to polish ur knowledge bout cars go to paultan.org and learn!

Anonymous said...

I dun understand why almost all repliers here thinks the name Europestar is given by Proton, did u think the name Proton is given by Mitsubishi? or the name Perodua is given by Daihatsu??

The name Europestar is create by the Chinese company Youngman themselves as a branding for their cars, and in case if u did not know, they approached Lotus to help them design a car, therefore Lotus is their direct partner, Lotus advised them to rebadge a Gen 2 to cut cost rather than redesign a new car, thats how became wat we see today. Youngman still emphasized that the car is tuned by Lotus, which infact IS A EUROPEAN car company, so wat is so wrong with EuropeStar to promote a European handling car??

I love Malaysia, but i definitely wont see a point of selling it under names like MalaysiaStar, its the same to you, would you buy a product named after MyammarChampion?? I'm sure naming is very important in marketing ur product, no matter how much you loved Malaysia, it is a fact that Malaysia is still not known to be pioneers in car industry, so why risk it? If you use Europestar, at least it gives a chance for the Chinese to accept the product first, give it a try and only to find out it comes from Malaysia and get impressed. If you named it MalaysiaStar or something like that, most Chinese may not even want to buy it home!!!
