ISA detainees: when did they posed threat to national security?

Syed Hamid: We can’t just free ISA detainee

Hindu Rights Action Force leader M. Manoharan who is being detained under the Internal Security Act cannot be released just because he was elected Kota Alam Shah assemblyman, Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said.

“We cannot simply react to political parties’ calls. We have to give priority to public safety and peace and will give due consideration only if there is no threat to national security.”

What is national security?

The concept of security of Malaysia goes back to the days when communists were a national threat to the maintaining of peace and national sovereignty. The ISA was therefore introduced to curb the imminent threats. But the communists had surrendered, and thereafter, the ISA has been used to curb political differences and to suppression of rights and freedom of individuals.

Although national security measures are imposed with the sole intention to protect society as a whole, such measures will necessarily tend to restrict the rights and freedoms of individuals. The concern is that where the exercise of national security laws and powers is not subject to good governance, the rule of law, and strict checks and balances, there is a risk that "national security" may simply serve as a pretext for suppressing unfavorable political and social views. Taken to its logical conclusion, this view contends that measures which may ostensibly serve a national security purpose (such as mass surveillance, and censorship of mass media), could ultimately lead to a police state (reference: Wikipedia)

In a recent incident in Terengganu, Umno members demonstrated against the Sultan of Terengganu who is also our Malaysian King, the Yang di Pertuan Agong, and the Umno members carried placards that reads: "Kami nak Idris Natang"; did they not called our Tuanku, Natang? And if our Tuanku can be called Natang, wouldn't it threatened the integrity and honour of our sovereign ruler? He is King, he is our King, not Natang.

But no one was arrested and charged for sedition and no one was put under ISA. However, when the Hindraf wanted to present a memo to the British High Commissioner, many were arrested and five of them were detained under the ISA, and not allowed to defend their case in the court of law. Syed Hamid said they posed a threat to national security. This is clearly an abuse of power and analogous to a police state.

its a matter of choice of words,....
'We can't just free ISA detainee'

its
'We won't free ISA detainee'

even communists have turned capitalists albeit with a different label. times have moved on.

the unwillingness to face current changes in the will of the people will evaporate what little political support that remains. maybe all the better as the demise of race based politics will be quick and painless.

it looks like a tango, one is leading the other in a dance to the end.

and today's political blogs with credibility, easily spotlights deadly flaws in poor judgement.

ISA is a draconian law that build FOR abuse.

Despite the so call "protect the society peace and harmony", it is actually an ultimate lies to allow abuse. In fact, ISA has become a ultimate weapon for ANYTHING.

No civil society should have such law. It is a huge liberty price that we pay for "limited" and bogus security.

Perhaps the famous quote by Thomas Jefferson say it all :
Those Who Sacrifice Liberty For Security Deserve Neither.

In the justice system of BN, every incident is viewed differently if it is committed by UMNO and non-UMNO people.

It doesn't mean that if UMNO does it, others can also do it.

Hypocrites...bl**dy hypocrites!

They don't seem to be aware that the rakyat have nad enough of this and this is one root cause of their failure.

They have become irrelevant with the times.

obviously Syed Hamid didnt do his homework on ISA of the 19th Century and National Security Threat to Malaysia and/or Malaysian in the 21st Century.

the Mat Rempits and Monkey Boy is the biggest threat most Malaysian Public faces daily to continue their daily lives, yet no ISA taken on these hooligans and 'protected animals'.

Syed need to put his priority right and get his conscience clear if he wants to perform well in his career and life, otherwise all will go down the drain and end-up shit, like any other disposals from current cabinet if not cabaret members!

Albar should remember his father. So this shit doesn't want to release the HINDRAF 5? No problem - we can put him there with mahathir and AAB if he is afraid the camp will be empty. Let Anwar bring in those BN turncoats and takeover the Govt now.

The more we talk about UMNO and its shennanigans the more coverage they will enjoy. Just ignore their antics and attention seeking acts. We should concentrate on nation building and our quest for fairness and justice for all....

Power has certainly gone to the heads of UMNO leaders. They must think that they are invincible.

Calling the King an animal? They should be jailed!

Daulat Tuanku!!!

That Manoharan stood for the recent elections shows that he believed in the sanctity of the polls and the parliamentary system. So where is the threat posed by him?

Free him or charge him!

Jefus,

Samy Vellu now is championing the Hindraf release.

Moo_t,

I love the Jefferson quote.

Bayi,

I share your points.

Khun Pana,

I do not agree. The 22 ADUN is acting as BN state representative only.

SV,

I think the PM should release the 5 Hindraf and let the issue be closed.

Artchan,

PM didn't replace Zam with Syed. Pak Lah was the Home Minister and later Azmi Khalid was made Home Minister.

Kittykat Honey,

You may be right.

Bayi,

I hope you are the Home Minister.
