Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said today that the government has not made a decision to shelve the country’s space programme though no funds are available for the second mission at the moment.
He said the government had other options including continuing with the space training now and proceed with the second mission later if the programme was facing financial constraint.
Najib said he liked Malaysia’s second astronaut Mej Dr Faiz Khaleed to continue with the space training.
Najib was asked to comment on news reports on the prospect of the space programme being scrapped as there was no money (Source: NAJIB: Keep space programme option open )
Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili had earlier told reporters that the country’s space programme looks to be as good as grounded. There is no money for the programme.
“Under the mid-term review, I can say that there is zero money. If we want to proceed with the second phase we have to look for money,” Dr. Maximus said (read: Zero cash for second phase of Angkasawan space programme)
Russian Space Agency (Roskosmos) had offered to bring another Malaysian astronaut on a space mission in either 2010 or 2011 and Malaysia had decided on Dr Faiz as the candidate for the second mission.
It seems that Najib is trying hard to find the money needed for the program. Maybe one of the way is to buy more Sukhoi and include within the contract a term that makes the Russian pays for the trip such as the one previously. Another $4b of military hardware purchase will save the space programme.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said that infrastructure projects under its multi-billion-dollar five-year 9-Malaysia Plan may have to be delayed due to escalating costs.
Abdullah, who is also finance minister, said high on the casualty list is the construction of a vital second bridge linking Penang to peninsular Malaysia.
The Prime Minister said there were a number of reasons for the Penang 2nd Bridge project delay.
“First, we need to acquire the land needed to develop the project, then there are matters relating to the design. We want to ensure that it is the best design.
“Also the cost needs to be looked at. There may be some changes in the cost because the price of materials have gone up,” he told reporters on Tuesday after delivering his speech at the Asia Europe Culture Ministers Meeting.
Abdullah also said that several other projects under the RM200 billion development plan from 2006 to 2010 would be reviewed. (Source: Gov't to delay projects amid rising costs )
It was reported that the second bridge was originally estimated at RM3.6bil but the costing had gone up to RM4.3bil (see: PM: Many reasons for Penang bridge delay )
I happened to receive some information from reliable sources. They told me that the portion of works to be carried out by UEM's foreign partner, China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) is already RM4.8 billion and this excludes UEM portion of works such as earthworks and other ancillary works which could amount to another RM2 billion. If we are to include land acquisition the total cost for the bridge would be around some RM7.5 billion, and not RM4.3 billion as reported by TheStar.
There was another problem between UEM and CHEC partnership of which UEM holds 49% and CHEC holds the remaining 51% in the joint-venture consortium. The joint venture legal entity was named as CHEC-UEM JV but UEM sends all letters under the name of UEM-CHEC JV of which the CHEC may just ignore the contractual letters and of which may have future potential legal implications should there be disputes that puts the party to battle it out in the court. The probable reason is that UEM wants to have their corporate name in front to denote control and power while the CHEC wants their name in front to denote that they are financing the project based on the G2G (government-to-government) initiated collaboration.
When this 2nd bridge project was mooted way back in 1996 the budgeted cost was around RM2 billion and should Mahathir had carried out this project at the same time as the KLIA project we could have saved RM5.5 billion. But then Mahathir rather have Twin Tower, Star and Putra LRT and another RM10 billion for Putrajaya, Wetland project, Cyber Entertainment Village, etc.
And most of all, Najib is working hard to find RM2-4 billion to buy Russian military hardwares so as to sent our Costmorenaut to the international space station.

so much money wasted on the trappings when it could have been better spent on the essentials.
so sad lah, people are so careless with Ah Kong's (grandfather in Hokkien) money ... not money from their own sweat and tears so can afford to be frivolous.
Its a good thing then that the New Dawn in Malaysia arrived on 8 March 2008. Otherwise, I shudder to think of how much more money is wasted on frivolous projects.
What a grand name for taking a ride in a taxi,...... space program,.... sheesh.
Could this be Pak La;s crooked bridge? What goes around, comes around.
Cost-more-naut?
Mave, you are a riot! This is betterthan my jokes! Hahahaha....!
Malaysia heading into trouble - coming shock is like no other.

thank
high on the list is the 2nd bridge hm.... wonder y? of cox it has prob. but y? how bt iskandar malaysia? oh... tat one cannot huh? too many 4th level boys involved. somemore, johor still BN mah. and yes.... all this corridor waiting for investors mah... so not really affected.
bythe way, wetland and cyber entertainment die off right?
You Malaysians are just dumb crazy ! Why a space programme ? This fellow who went up into space with the Russkies was no astronaught, he was a space TOUTIST for god's sake.
Space programme is for nations who have sophisticated research projects and for protecting their space assets eg. the USA, Russia and China and they have research into astrophysics and all kinds of fancy stuff. Their programme is not for fun but to have the most effective space assests that will eventually end up a star wars shit !
The price tag for a space launch in the USA is like 2billion to 4 billion and for China too a launch is close to a billion. Malaysi is not even in the ball park; you do not have the know how and the talent to get into the space shit ! Spend your money on more realistic and down to earth programme.
JUST FORGET THE SHIT ABOUT SPACE !
eeer Msia don't need heat shield technology, UMNO skin very thick aldy,...:P
thats one down.
The people in Penang can swim across if they want. No point spending money on them now or back during Mahathir's time. Penang only know how to produce liars, cheats and homosexuals like Lim Kit Siang, Karpal Singh and Anwar Ibrahim. (No discrimination in races here.)
As for as Najib spending more money on arms.. Yes, go for it. Otherwise the Chinese will start taking over Malaysia as they did Singapore.
Cukup la. Dun like the Malay government, go back home to China!
At least, we still welcome all the gals from PRC for your pleasure.
The Stats failure from UM never bothered to do any mathematical calculations for his projects. That's why all his grand projects have to be cancelled/postponed for lack of funds BEFORE they ever started. Might as well let Homo Azizan (SPM qualifications), the former driver of Anwar, be Finance Minister.
some indians dont realise that indians in malaysia can survive under a malay govt in spite of certain unfairness from UMNO but the indians will DEFINITELY NOT survive under a total chinese govt. This is a FACT that every indian must give a serious thought. If UMNO had shown enough considerations to the indian community the name Makkal Sakthi(people power) would not have echoed throughout malaysia. when chinese complain of this n that of the govt, take a look at an average chinese company, driver malay, office boy indian n the rest of the staff n management chinese. with govt intervention the malay became name sake HR executive. go and be an apprentice to a chinese mechanic and see if he can teach anything to the non chinese, you learn practically nothing n you resign. this is what the mechanic wants. the chinese community is such that you die is your business only they must survive as an individual and community. I think the chinese in malaysia enjoy a very high standard of living and freedom compared to Indonesia n China or even Singapore. Yes the chinese can demand for their rights as per our constituition. but what about their attitude towards other races.
In today's STAR, China's consignment of weapons to the politically unstable country of Zimbabwe, a country still writhing in agony over the recent polls should be an eye opener on the evil intentions of China. The port workers in Zimbabwe refuse to unload it out. By sending arms and destroying the people there China hopes to gain a better deal on trade. What a shame. Instead of Guns send food. Oh my God those heartles chinese communists.
Wow, plenties of anonymous comments that spins for hatred.

Doc,
For the 2nd Penang Bridge, there is no scientific number and sustainable figures to support it, is it OSA?
IMHO, current Penang bridge traffic problem are cause by BAD government policies. The federal and states government paralyze the public transport for the sick of create revenue for the petrol company, banks and the bridge.
E.g. Assume 1 bus taking 50 passenger, It can remove 50/4 = 12.5 cars from the road. 10 buses can remove 12.5 x 10 = 125 cars from the bridge, while transport 500 passengers.
Since Malaysia rarely car pool, 50% of the car are SOV. In fact, a bus can remove ((25/4) + (25/1)) = 25+6.25 = 31.25 cars. So in fact, 10 buses can replace 312 cars during peak hour.
In addition, the ferry can transport 150-200 passenger at one time. With efficient bus routing services, drive to/from Penang Island deem not necessary. However, previous Penang state government purposely neglect and refuse to upgrade the ferry services in order to coherent with federal government "crippling public transport" policies.
mave,
looks like ur blog had been noticed by the cybertroopers... u shld think of it as an honour haha....
Not spins for hatred, FACTS mah
yes, good job mave. idiots are taking notice of your site. just ignore them, that's will be best.
moo_t ur other comments on the bridge, ferry etc r excellent
U R THE IDIOT
I thought the PM went to Batu Kawan to lay the foundation stone for the second bridge by driving in the first pile on the 16th Nov 2006. After 18 months we stood by and watch while time flies by. By right the bridge should be half way completed if everyone does his work.
as i said, just ignore the idiots. bravo mave, let them go crazy. i just like it this way. haha...
moot
u are aboslutely right. go back to basics which is the ferry.
improve and enlarge the ferry services with buses to ply the island and mainland routes. its a cheaper alternative. hey, BN stop robbing the people and go back to basics.
Malaysia doesnt need the longest bridge in South East Asia. Malaysia does not lack self confidence and its image has to be bolstered by longest this, biggest that, tallest shit...do away with the superlatives and go back to basics. Reverse from mahatir's ways of destruction.
moo_t anon 9-17am to 11-36 appears to be the same writer
"even the dumb (sic) are entitled to a point of view"
I dunno about others but whether 1 or 1000 malaysian space tourists goes up in space has not changed ONE iota of my life for the better.
Maybe it has done something for some of you?
It's a waste of blooody money - again for which there is NO accountabilty!
Is anyone in Umno still wondering why we can't all talk about their wise management of our economy and funds???
And btw When you meet foreigners do you tell them Msia is well known for its multi-ethnic people and culture or
Do you tell them about the 1st man we send as a tourist into space?
I dun wanna be the world's 1st clown if I did the latter!
In today's Star page N47, the spinners have posted a cartoon of a malaysian spacecraft(!!!) with the national flag painted on it under the caption "2nd angkasawan".
To those unfamiliar with the space program, it would seem that malaysia has produced spacecrafts capable of carrying astronauts into space. This is like claiming the first man to set foot on Mars will be a malay!!!
finally... the truths prevail.
yet some still think we should give that lying pm another chance to redeem himself.

the guy who starts calling others idiots pls lay your claim. what is your basis. come on answer bastard.
Not Cybertroops, just level headed malaysians against some apprentice communist
I saw the TV interview our DPM gave on TV regarding the shelved 2nd astronaut program. He seemed adamant those newspaper reported the 2nd space mission is cancelled.
Well, just look at US and world economy. Everything is not going well. Another space mission?
What do we have to proof?
Hey Mave, you commentors are a pssionate lot arent they?
And no funds huh? Wonder where allllll that money goes.... =p
umno may yet resort to borrowing money from the IMF in order to fund the 2nd Angkasawan project, while the low-income malaysians starve under the rising costs of food
GobloKing and Anon 12:01 is right, idiots and morons are still entitle for their comments here.
if you have a problem with China, don't take it out on good malaysian. go start your own war with China and see what happens. I pray for you.
and if you have a problem with good malaysian, try to separate the issue from China.
for spunning hatred and calling good malaysia as cummunist, yes, i think you are an idiot.. and an idiot you are.
god bless malaysian!
cakap saja malaysian, but the chinese here no differant from main land China communist, at least thats what the majority of them are. dont hide under the lable malaysian. The only thing straight about them is their hair. I still feel the good hearted nature of the malays to allow the other races to stay here, wheather constituition or no constituition.
kalau cina control dah lama kita semua sudah bungkus. Singapore gone, penang half gone. Facts are facts. Dont call others idiots.
stop the Malay bashing. you guys are lucky to live in this country. If a malaysian chinese was sent into space the whole lot of the chinese in malaysia would support the move. From the hawker to the chinese guilds, chinese associations, chinese based political parties etc etc would even donate money for the project. Tapi bila malaysia hantar satu melayu, the whole lot of the chinese start barking. Yes from enconomy point of view project is not a good idea but from race based point of view should be no problem at all. May be the next guy in space from persekutuan tanah melayu should be a chinese followed by an indian. Then no complaints.
Beranyone,
He is not lying. He is sourcing for funds.
Gan,
They have lost directions or are looking for deal No.2
Purple Haze,
The truth is there is no money for all those projects.
Jefus,
Brace ourselves for the coming economic downturn.
Bayi,
Is it? No, your's better.
Warisankini,
Thanks for the link.

Moo_t,
Your mathematics looks sound.

There's no cybertroopers. It's school kids learning politics through the coconut.
Gobloking,
The problem is our national ideology is based on rhetorics and rituals to demonstrate the boleh spirit.
Helen,
There's a lot to proof. It proved that we can spent another $4b on Russian hardwares.
Constant Drama,
Ya, you are right; and we have to be accommodating as long as it's within the parameters.
NO, not that we don't have money for another space programme. We just couldn't find the right candidate. It's not easy to get a gay that can play yo-yo and be a model for our batik shirts, to go up there.
By the way, what information have we acquired from the first one? ...that the earth is round?? We spent RM4bil for that info??
Perhaps, the money can be spent on making better cars on earth...
they can lie all they want but we know better what.. when pak lah took over, he said malaysia has no money altho mahathir strongly denied it. and then instead doing prudent spending (as logic dictates if country has indeed no money), he spent lavishly on buying private airbus, doing the stupid monsoon cup, launching corridors, etc.. raising fuel price to get more money... he was spending money like nobody business. and then now, after looting the country of it;s riches from 2003, he claimed the country got no money. if you look at all the physical projects he proposes in 2004, non was completed. don;t believe me? look at the rmk 9projects. even some of rmk 8 projects were scrapped (coz he said very wasteful n we need to save the money - like the crooked bridge). but now how? pak lah is an idiot. even that is an understatement.

pls use your brain, and differentiate between malays bashing, and individual bashing. I am bashing you, and you alone. i never read anyone never mention about malays in their comments, cos they are all not like you, an idiot.
in fact i don't know you are a malay. i only know you talk like an idiot. btw, i am an indian.
but you keep talking about 'Chinese going back to China', and incite racism, and you will ask me to go India as well someday. So after hearing earlier anon calling you an idiot, and decided to that you are one.

You have remembered rightly. He said he was frugal and then he acted with trillion-dollar projects.
What!!!
We need more space touristssss
to make malaysia famous!
GO GO GO!!!!
THis is crazyy!
Jebatmustdie,
Sorry typo error earlier.
Edi,
Ya, it will make Malaysia more famous; so many ways to be famous...
HA HA HA another STUPID IDIOT and claims to be Indian. Grow up KIDS
Mav, thanks for your patience. I am no racist but too much bashing on the space programee, in my opinion, reflected a racial under tone. Hence my comments. Tq.
There is nothing racial about the space-program issue. I'm a Malay and many other Malays I know also thinks the space-program was a waste of money. We allowed ourselves to be conned by the russians.
Anon 5:27pm and Anon 3:32am
Thank you both for the rational attitude and constructive comments.
How I wish all the anons can be as intellectual and open in mental thoughts and have critical reflective attitudes.
I would much appreciate if you could use nicknames so as to permit me to address you more respectfully.
Both Anons are idiots
No malay will condemn a malay going into space esp if its first for malaysia. Hi you fucking chinese, stop pretending to be a malay on this blog.
Good news for the chinese. Next malaysian in space is Lim Kit Siang's grandson!
