Petronas bankrupt by 2018, says Hassan Marican

Petronas president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Hassan Marican said Petronas will go bust within 10 years if all its profits are handed to the Government to continue subsidising fuel.

He warned that many national petroleum companies in the world have ceased to exist or were in financial trouble today because all their profits were taken away from them.

Hassan said that in the oil business it was important to reinvest profits in search of new technologies, reserves and continued revenue. Petronas has so far reinvested RM178.9bil of its profits.

“Petronas has played a major role by giving back a substantial amount of its profits to the Government,” he added.

At the close of its financial year in March last year, the national petroleum company had given the Government RM52.3bil in taxes, royalties and dividends which worked out to be 32% of the Federal Government’s revenue.

“Since the formation of Petronas in 1974 to last year, the company gave the Government RM335.7bil out of a total profit of RM570bil,” Hassan said.

Commenting on the fuel price increase, the Petronas boss said the corporation did not make a sen from the increase.

“All the oil companies get full market price for the petrol and diesel that they sell and the Government pay them the difference from the fixed price. This is where the subsidy comes into play,” he added.

Hassan said Exxon Mobil made about US$40bil (RM130.31bil) last year, an increase of only US$1bil (RM3.26bil) from 2006, in an environment of higher crude oil prices.

“That is the world’s biggest, most efficient and most well-run oil company. Margins have eroded,” he said.

Hassan said Petronas was now “ scraping the bottom of the barrel” as far as finding and extracting oil was concerned.

Asked about criticisms that Petronas' accounts and profits were not transparent, Hassan said the corporation published a very detailed annual report which was deposited in the Parliament library.

“For all intents and purposes, Petronas is a public-listed company because we are rated by agencies like Standard and Poors, and Moody. We do not hide anything,” he added.

Will Petronas go bust by 2018? You bet! By then equality will prevail; everyone will be poor and destitute.

Meanwhile, the effects of the increase in fuel price and electricity tariffs have started to kick in.

Just a day after the announcement of the increases, the following developments have taken place:

> Bus and lorry companies announced that they are increasing charges or will be forced to stop services;

> The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers said its members will pass on any increase in costs to consumers;

> Hawkers and other food operators will wait and see before raising prices; and

Lorry transportation charges have increased between 40% and 60% effective yesterday. Johor Lorry Operators Association president Leow Hock Tiap said the new rates complied with the Road Transport Act 1987 allowing lorry operators to charge a maximum of 15 sen for every kilometre.

Stage and express buses may stop running in the last week of every month if operators do not receive more subsidised diesel supply under the fleet card system. Pan Malaysian Bus Operators Association president Datuk Ashfar Ali said although the system entitled them to diesel at RM1.43 a litre, supply was not enough.

“The amount we get is enough for about 70% of our operations. Unless we get at least 30% more, we are in trouble,” he told The Star.

Ashfar said operators used to absorb the price difference when the pump price was RM1.58 a litre but could not manage now that the price was increased to RM2.58 yesterday.

“My members are saying that when they run out of the diesel quota, they will stop operating until they receive the quota for the following month,” he said.

Save Energy Ma's Way

In Taiwan, President Ma Ying-jeou uses stairs instead of the life and addresses conferences in short sleeve shirts.

Chauffeur-driven ministers ride compact sedans to work, while rank-and-file officials pedal bicycles.

Taiwan's Ministry of Defence vowed to cut down on warplanes and training cruises and promised to cut oil consumption.

This is Ma's sweeping energy and cost saving drive to deal with soaring fuel, food and inflationary pressures.

Mulling space capsule buy

Meanwhile, Malaysia is working hard to find the monies to purchase the Soyuz capsule which would likely cost $65mil for the shell and probably another $60mil for refurbishments so that it can be placed in a location that will attract tourists.

With the savings from the reducing of subsidies it should no more be a problem to allocate the funds for the capsule and also to pay for the next mission for our next space participants for a trip to ISS. The mission to the Mars is still under design stage at the ministry.

As to the rising cost of living, the govt advice the people to cut their cost of living. The programme "Ubah Gaya Hidup" will be launched soon by the various ministries and probably the govt had to allocate a few hundred millions to fund the programme.

The ministers are very excited of the programme and many of them have started lobbying for a stake in the initiatives.

At the same time, Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar said the government is concern and wish to advise all the people not to participate in any kind of demonstrations which would affect the peace of the people and cause disturbances to the silent majority of the public at large. Such acts would also adversely affect the economy and cause traffic problems. Yesterday's demonstration by DAP had caused the KLCI to drop 30 points which translates to a loss of some $3b market value.

DAMAI, the group that had called themselves the "Silent Majority" may be asked to show their patriotism again.

Lee Chong Meng is now busy preparing for DAMAI's next assignment.

mav,

they definietly need to buy the capsule. presciently, i can tell you that another US$200 million will be spent on refurbishment and retrofitting, not for MARS program. But, little birds tell me that to justify this collosal amount, they are planning to be the first country in the world to attempt getting near to the SUN AT NIGHT using the retrofitted capsule.
Oops, they are going to spend another RM100 million on billboards throughout the Asean region to showcase their achievements.
The country cannot stinge on such an important space program, can they?

Lee Chong Meng's next assignment is to try and get appointed as a Senator, which would then make him eligible to be made a cabinet minister. This is the way how politicians rejected at the polls make a comeback.

umno's scientists are no fools. They will not only travel to the SUN AT NIGHT, but also during the WINTER because the sun cools down due to the snow

Hasan Merican, don't add the fear factor at the wrong time.

We want to know where the savings from reduction of the subsidy will be spent? Are they spent to alleviate the Rakyat problem?

During the last hike, DPM say the saving of RM4 billions will be used to improved the public transportation? We, are public transport users have not smell any improvement.

No with this hike to RM2.70, there are savings of RM56 billion. Where is this money going to?

talk is cheap (i already tired listening AAB bullshiting anyway) - why don't the ceo publicly publish their bookeeping and let us have the say. even the brazillian oil company is much more tranparent than this petronas. i can say petronas can go busted next year if the gov keep subsidying at 1.92 without fact and figure to backup.

PR MPs should raise motion to abolish that whatever akta petroleum.......

This PAK LAH is really an IDIOT and born to be as IDIOT.

You look at him and you sure see an IDIOT face in him.

WTF, people suffer after supporting the IDIOT Party.

The people that supported him are also IDIOT!

food operators wait and see?

I think not. Klang valley food operators are so cost sensitives, even chicken rice has increase RM0.50 .

We are yet to see the worst of inflation.

mave,

I seriously think we should really explore other sources of energy because I read somewhere that our oil reserves will be gone by 2013! WTH!!??

So th oil increase IS a blessing in diguise, prolly the high price would really make our people think twice about how they make use of their petrol! A little bit goes a long way, we can whine about the govt's past mistakes, but might as well safe what we already have left.

ok, Petronas in Msia wraps up in 2018, what about Sudan, Turkmenistan, Myanmar? Pakistan? Vietnam? et al?

seems to me he is not revealing all. Petronas used to show up in Forbes with huge reserves,..... very successful, up there with Exxon Mobil.

the price of petrol will multiply itself into the pocket of the consumer, bus fares, food, transportation of goods, ......

going by his track record,..... Pak Lah will do a back flip any time now,...............;P ( just in jest, not serious )

if petronas going to flop, i suggest it should pull back from sponsoring F1 - waste money only ......

savings from reduction of the subsidy will be used mostly to secure food industry. this can be more beneficial for malaysian as a whole. hope that this will work out well

UBAH!

I was on holiday by the beach out in the bondocks. First news that greeted me when I came back to civilization is the fuel price increase! KNN!

Petronas can go bust for all I care. I am not going to sit on my butt to rant & rave; instead I am going to get my wheels to run on water or die trying!
Wish me luck!

BN can go suck eggs!!

Under the Production Sharing Contract, foreign oil companies will pay for all the exploration and prospecting expenses. If they strike oil, they have to share the oil proceed with Petronas. The share of the oil produced is kind of royalty normally paid to government in other countries but here it is given to Petronas. Most of Petronas profits are given to them by the government which otherwise could have been royalties for the government. If Petronas employees can get 6 months bonuses from free money given to them by the government, what the hell are they complaining about subsidies given to the public. Dont think Petronas worked hard or smart to make all the big profits which are because of the special benefits as a national oil company

It sickens me to the core when I read about the gomen stinging on the rakyats and wasting lots and lots on frivolous expenditure such as this Soyuz capsule !!

We, the rakyats will soon be reduced to the destitutes.

CK,

Lee Chong Meng may be the next MCA VP.

Yok Hoong,

That's amusing news to me; I thought they plan to go to MARS; now I'm hearing of the Sun; that's a world record.

Niamah,

DPM said the $4b was to be spent on public transport; ya, it did; transport to the Moon.

Denzook,

Even if the book is published, you will not get to see those income from foreign investments; that's OSA.

ORIS,

He is not idiot; he is a good PM but he is not sure what to do with a system that is so corrupt. He can't clean out the corrupts because they are just too many.

Moo_t,

Today's Chinese Newspaper says canned food is up by 30%. The chain effect will cause inflation to hit 15% soon; not 5%.

Sandyow,

I do not dispute the fact that allowing the market free movement is good; but in all fairness, the prices of everything must also be free to float; example is cars which is taxed 100-300%; that's protectionist policy of which the rakyat pays to keep Proton competitive. That note that we are oil exporting country.

Jefus,

Your prediction will come true.

Denzook,

I agree on the F1 suggestion.

Zewt,

It won't go bust at this moment when raping mother earth; it will go bust when mother earth dries up.

Beeranyone,

You may be right; but he is the best amongst all who are far worse.

Kfaisal,

Even that, Petronas will not go bust; If Petronas puts their excess cash into a bank earning 5% per annum, they could even earned $10b a year.

Dickbird,

I tend to agree with your points.

Qwerty,

Good luck and I will join you too.

Maverick SM said...

Gan,

But the Soyuz capsule is very important for the Ketuanan concept and the Boleh concept; so how???

Seems like theres so much going wrong with the BN. I where's the rot coming from? I understand the much publicized issues with UMNO, and even more with MIC, but I can't help but wonder what's wrong with MCA? What do YOU think is wrong?

To be honest, I think it's the least wrong party in BN; but it does need to refocus on what it is set up to do in the first place.

What would YOU do if you led them?

Anonymous said...

If petronas goes bust let it go bust. Sooner the better. It did not benefit the commoners at all now. It is just a cash cow for those bastards to steal and take for their own use. If it goes bust, these incorrigible sonof@b!tch have nothing to steal from anymore.

Petronas should be the source of cheap petrol for malaysians until our oil runs out...and not make us pay "current" world prices when we have oil in our backyard.

Looks like semua dah jadi burung kakak tua AAB, SIL&Co. including our TS Hassan. You don't have to be the CEO of a major oil company to note that MANY of the NOCs (National Oil Companies: Saudi Aramco, ADNOC of UAE, Qatar Petroleum, Kuwait Nat. Oil Co., Libya NOC, GazProm, LukOil, StatOil, Venezuela NOC, etc. etc. 24 or so of them) contributed from 10% up to 70% of their profits for their countries' conomic development for the past upteen years... and NONE of them went bankcrupt yet, or ever... provided the money is WELL SPENT lah... how come our TS is playing this FEAR FACTOR game to echo the gomen's action? Be more responsible lah sikit, OR is it our TS' CONTRACT DAH NAK EXPIRE?

Maverick SM said...

IAT,

MCA did no wrong; just didn't do what was right for the community it represent. It was suppose to represent the community's interest; but it represented the few leaders interest and let the community rot.

Artchan,

I do not agree that Petronas must subsidise the fuel usage of vehicle owners. More importantly, Petronas gain should be used for the national development programmes and to eradicate poverty and raise the living standard of the people such as contribution to education, granting scholarships to all deserving students irrespective of race and to use the gains for the absolute benefits of the people at large, not the government leaders and their families such as Mahathir's children and Pak Lah's son and relatives.

Dhahran Sea,

I tend to agree with your analysis.

So, PETRONAS is going to go bust by 2018, is it? No problem, just sell off the Twin Tower and you'll still have some cash flow for some time.

Maverick SM said...

Bully,

They may sell the twin tower and buy the Soyuz capsule.
