Abusing God and Religion

ABDULLAH: Name of god and religion being abused to justify violence and terrorism

BERNAMA News report

Many individuals and groups have abused the name of God and religion to justify violence and terrorism, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said today.

The prime minister said such extremism had been observed many times in the course of history and in each instance, the virtuous teachings of religion had been twisted and manipulated on behalf of one’s religion, for the sake of political gain or personal profit.

“In our own time, we have witnessed many injustices committed in the name of religion, including the occupation of someone else’s land and the dispossession that ensues from it. This is surely an affront to the dignity of the person, and a blemish upon the freedom that is a human being’s birthright.”

“The phenomenon of religious extremism should compel most of us, especially religious scholars and intellectuals to engage with the wider public in order for them to play a vital role in combating ignorance and the perversion of religion,” Abdullah said.

He said it was not enough to produce intellectual works and present papers at scholarly meetings, nor to lock themselves away in their ivory towers.

The prime minister was speaking at the opening of the International Conference on Religion in The Quest for Global Justice and Peace, here today.

Dear Prime Minister,

How true; very true! Your statement is without reservation the spoken reality and are empirical observations of the real world and in particular, we can see it happening in Malaysia, more so, within Umno's functions and public statements from those name-sake politically-connected Umno-controlled NGOs.

I would like to reiterate your statements, in particular these lines: "... the virtuous teachings of religion had been twisted and manipulated on behalf of one’s religion, for the sake of political gain or personal profit.

“In our own time, we have witnessed many injustices committed in the name of religion ..."

"... This is surely an affront to the dignity of the person, and a blemish upon the freedom that is a human being’s birthright.”

These lines you preached sums up the pure realities and reflects the factual situations of our very own racially-divisive intra-connected political systems.

But how come you attended the March 10 meeting with PAS and Khir Toyo to conspire the takeover of the 4 State Government that BN had lost?

That meeting was made and addressed in the name of Islam and Malay Unity and the reality as espoused, exposed and revealed by Khir Toyo and Abdul Khalid Samad was the pure fact revealed by Khir who said Anwar was the man behind the failure of Umno and PAS to agree to a conspiracy to eliminate Pakatan Rakyat and KeAdiLan from forming the state government of Selangor, Perak and Kedah; thus ensuring the continued domination of Umno with PAS as it's new sleeping partner while at the same time Umno continued to sleep in the same bed with MCA Chinese, Gerakan Chinese and MIC Indians, plus Kadazan Christians, Dayak Christians, Iban Christians, Bidayuhs, Malanaus, Dusuns, Muruts, in the name of multi-racial power-sharing and wealth sharing in a constricted and stultified environment.

Dear Pak Lah,

You mention about blemishing upon the human rights birthrights and I am truly impressed and at the same time apprehensive. I am Chinese and born in Malaysia; constitutionally granted a Malaysian Citizenship and possesses the rights to all that is stipulated in the sacred Constitution. Isn't this my human rights birthrights and should also include my children's birthrights and also all others too? Why is it that Umno Tajuddin and Ibrahim Ali and many others in Umno including your son-in-law, states that all Malaysian non-Malay children should not be equally and fairly granted government-PSD scholarships (which used money contributed by all taxpayers) and that 80% PSD scholarships should be exclusively reserved for Malays only, while the non-Malays and Natives from Sabah and Sarawak consists of more than 45% of the population would be sharing 20% crumps? Why is UiTM reserved 100% for Malays only? Why is Design-Built Contracts reserved exclusively for Bumiputeras only? Why does rich Malays enjoy 15% discounts for buying houses while the poors from other races are deprived from these discounts?

I accepted wholeheartedly that the underprivileged and poor Malays must be assisted and enabled, which is the express provision inscribed in the Constitution and fully respected by all citizen; but it should not, and never should it ever be, an outright exclusivity of a single race only.

Professor Dr Shad Saleem Faruqi from UiTM said the spirit of Article 153 is of affirmative action for Malays and natives, not of hostile discrimination against “non-bumiputras” and I am certain all jurisprudence scholars and intellectuals would agree absolutely with him.

Dear Pak Lah, did you read the article by Dr Shad Saleem Faruqi? I have linked it above just in case you miss it. For your benefit I shall re-linked it here and here again in case TheStar had deleted the article as directed.

Please Mr PM, can you explain the contradistinction and contradiction between the above phenomenas.

i think you give the PM too much credit. He is really CAKAP TAK SERUPA BIKIN. Maybe he knows nothing of the speech becos he is not the writer of the speech, or he is saying so to play to the gallery. Those days only those in the hall will hear your speech, but now the whole world can receive the speech due to internet. It only exposes his shallowness.

Tau cakap tak tau bikin, tak malukah?

Where got malu, this one? Keeps having fulats and not aware of that(like over DNA). He does not know what he himself is talking about!

Anonymous said...

Do you, Mr Sleepy head know what you are talking about?

Next time read the script which written by your spin doctors before you read this to the public?

Do you think this is consistent with your actions?????

Pak Lah is a perfect fit for "Peter's Principle" which states:-

"Everyone rises to their level of incompetence."

As such we can aptly confer on our PM the esteemed title of:

"B A P A___K E M E R O S O T A N___M A L A Y S I A"

“In our own time, we have witnessed many injustices committed in the name of religion, including the occupation of someone else’s land and the dispossession that ensues from it."

Who could he mean?

The USA invaded Iraq for security, revenge or oil according to various theories. They didn't do it to evanglise to the Iraqis.

Zionists control Israel so that the Jewish race has a homeland, not because they want Judaism to resurge (or else they wouldn't leave that mosque on the Temple site).

The only ones left are... Jihadis! Who openly declare that they are engaging in a holy war against infidels! Who (Hamas) have said on TV that they will conquer Rome and overrun Europe and America! Who have buat kacau in Acheh, Pattani and Jolo for the cause of a religion-dominated state!

Badawi, you are sooooooo insulting lol!

hey mav

you are talking to a man who truyl believes 'cakap tak serupa bikin"
he said ISA is draconian, he used it on Hindraf 5.
he said no jeans, now he is wearing one.he said no election, there's election.
he said i am a PM for all Malaysians and he secretly meet up with PAS to talk about Malay dominance in the guise of malay unity.
he said... and...

Whats next from him Mav? Like what Niamah (patrick Teoh) said, BE VERY AFRAID OF HIM WHEN HE OPENS HIS MOUTH.

As most of the bloggers are trying to growing htatred towards the PM, I have no further comments because different people different opinions. However, I would like to take things from perspective points of view.

From he said earlier, I too have witnessed many injustices committed in the name of religion, including the occupation of someone else's land and the disppossesion that ensues from it.

Anonymous said...

hallo!

i think what this man meant by "name of god and religion being abused to justify violence and terrorism" is like the act of suicide bombing, kidnapping and killing in the name of religion.

i took the speech as was made more relevant during The Quest for Global Justice and Peace which if more towards global issue and not local.

it's like never ending if we want to link that speech to all the local issues happening here in Malaysia.

for what is worth, whenever this man act or open his mouth then will be many others that either hate his gut or support his goodwill.dont make views only based by hatred.see things from many perspective.

oh and by the way,the first commenter here said that "if he prays 5 times a day he is well aware of the consequences of abusing the God and His religion".if he pray or not that none of your business.that's his thing with the God and not for you to decide.

my comments may lead to nowhere but this is just how i feels.that's all.

ROFL.

This is yet another "Shun the non believer", I am the truth mindset. Let start some you vs me ideology.

Religion
What I belief is a religion
What your belief is nothing but superstition or cult teaching

War
When I start a war, it is holy war
If you start a war, it is massacre, against humanity

Abuse of minority
When I abuse the minority, it is called execute the rights of majority
When you abuse the minority, well, it is abuse

ISA
when I send my political enemy to jail, it is mean to ensure harmony of the society
When you send me to jail using political reason, it is political imprison.

Hi Mav,

He is reading something that is prepared by someone else and I bet 100% that he has no idea what the heck he will be reading!

Suddenly he speaks of birthrights and rights of individual, suddenly so holy, so spiritual.

As far as I am concern, he is a damn hypocrite, the biggest one ever! Like you say :

CAKAP TAK SERUPA BIKIN!!!

You know it has gotten to a stage that I get so disgusted when his picture appears in the paper or even here. I just don't want to see his face anymore. Everything that comes out from his mouth smells "foul"........

Pls, pls lah, move on lah, Malaysians are chocking already!

Dear "nice guy finish last?",
Huh!!!?

Are you just migrate from North Korea and can't shake off the terror being imprison when name calling the leader?

If you born in Malaysia, then I feel sad for you. Let me tell you a joke :

During the cold war. An American told a Russian with proud, "We can scold the USA President in front of white house, no police will come to arrest me"

The Russian say, "Well, when I go to the Red square and scold USA president, KGB won't arrest me"

Anonymous said...

Doc,
you forget to check Rais Yatim speech to ask to include"respect elders and religion" into human rights chartered.

And you can bet his speech writer NEVER read the human rights chartered before prepare the speech.

By the way, did you vote? If you did, good for you but if you didn't shame on you....

OBAMA IN BERLIN,

When he is talking about intercontinental trust & partnerships...

When he is talking about new
dangers looming ahead...

When he is talking about renewing & repairing relationships & cooperations...

When he is talking about international hotspots & security for world citizen...

When he talking about dismantling nuclear arsenals...

When he is talking about climate changes & individual responsibilities...

When he is talking about the common struggle to bring justice & peace to this planet...

( Obama Berlin Speech - video & full speech transcript )
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/07/24/obama-in-berlin-video-of_n_114771.html

And all these in 40 mins and which are not his presidential policies but merely the aspirations of a true leader of the world... to see unity among the different races, creeds & religions... and yet he is just a presidential hopeful.

In our backyard, even if our leaders lack wisdoms, visions, determinations & wills to propel the country to greater heights... at least have the decency to project some integrity in their executiveship rather than shooting off crude remarks & giving two-palms gesture.

dear moo_t and toolan,

my points for my last post was that do something more rather than just saying it in the internet because i see most people here only tend to do the insults and filled oneself with hatred.i dont know care which party you voted for but you vote because you want better changes or personal reason?.but it's better to vote than not to vote at all.

my point is simple,do something more than just insulting.if you already did what i said then good for you.

Anonymous said...

You as a blog owner have done an excellent job for creating an avenue for people to hate the PM, and what more for making ppl believe he is not doing justice to Islam Thanks a bunch.

Anonymous said...

nice guy finish last?

and our point is very simple...

so our job - to keep telling everyone that this moron is an idiot & a much greater liar, which he is... very soon people like you will wake up & start to demand we need a leader with wisdom & vision to bring justice & security to all malaysians.

so nice guy...,

this is not a personal attack ( by his own minister definitions : personal attacks is about criticizing his face, clothes and preferences) but we are on about his policies, credibility & leaderships.

i'm not defending the ruling government here but i just would like to know if there are any culprits at all in the opposition party because of the time we hear about the culprits in the ruling government.

Anonymous said...

nice guy finish last,

if there is any culprits from opposition party, trust me, it will be on the newspaper headlines already and for a few days.

nobody will miss a word of how bad he is and which party he is from... etc.

Well injustices happens everywhere nowadays. We, ourselves are subjected in playing part to injustice no matter how small or big it is, whether one wants to admit it or not.

Anonymous said...

nice guy finish last got point.

people only know how to make personal attacks and fail to see the bigger picture of what our leaders are doing in real fact. I call this close minded and buta hati. And then make so uch noise on blogs. haiyooo. criticisms also must have substance mah!

Anonymous said...

Firstly, that "nice guy" label is a canard. He was then also accorded the 'Justice Bao' title as well b4 the 2004 GE!

All fulats afterwards also do not matter it seems. Instead fables became truth.

The mindless apologists here are quite pathetic.

Maverick

Pak Lah is going Senile and as a BENGGAP Senior Leader, he is waiting time for permanent retirement and as long as his time is not ended, he will continue mumbling his nonsense.

He is a long term burden and cancer to the nation. Jusrt ignore his message and talks; ignore it and never ever publish it in your blog as it does not add value at all.

Now more and more UMNO members are ignoring their leader ie Pak Benggap Lah, so why bother listening to this Pak Dunnggu Lah.

Its your call.

Anonymous said...

Nice Guy Finish Last?,

Do you know what is going on with Malaysia at this present moment? Or are you still stuck in some golden era??

Yes, you are right about doing something instead of just blabbering in blogs but excuse me, joining some or any political party isnt going to shake the world ala pronto you know. So how?

Maverick SM said...

Zelozelo7,

Crude oil price is down to the same price as at the time the subsidy is announced, which means, based on the then position, we are no back to the then.

CK,

We must appreciate the PM's speech; what we should be concern is the contradistinction.

Wits0,

I would elect to believe in PM's contention.

Ayahpin,

Thanks but it's irrelevant.

Artchan,

I elect to give the PM credit for his speech. Credit must be accorded where credit is due. I only seek his explanation of the contradistinction aforesaid.

Sleepyhead 2,

I think PM's action did not betray his speech except for the fact that there are contradistinction upon those events and phenomenas.

Qwerty,

Let's not be downtrodden; we need hope.

Scotthong,

Somehow, I do not agree with your analogy; you have your points which are empirical observation but it could not be related with this statement made by the PM.

Yok Hoong,

Like I contended above, I chose to believed his words; I just wanted clarifications.

Maverick SM said...

Wisdomthinker,

I most agree with your points and strongly agree with your contention that we should take things from the perspective points of view.

But I do not see it as trying to grow hatred; rather, it is more of disappointments following the events that caused much anxieties as expounded in Dr Shad Faruqi's posting ibid.

Do you agree with the statement from Tajuddin? That statement can cause distress and anxieties to the whole communities and could promote divisiveness and hatred.

Maverick SM said...

Modern Youth,

I agree with your analysis but if you are taking this virtues as an isolated virtue and values, then virtues and values are not needed in our belief system, neither will it be treated as sacred and humanistic.

Could you say I believe in God and at the same time say I can do sinful acts because it was not directed to God? We can contradict facts but we can't contradict values and virtues. You can't say I believed in Allah and at the same time acts against the teaching of the Quran.

WTF,

I think we need to be constructive and I hope to derive sharing of opinions.

Bunnies,

I chose to believe in his contention and I admire the statement but I need clarification.

Maverick SM said...

Tanie,

Thank you very much. Your statement is enlightening.

Jinsetan,

Irrespective; if it is, I really admire the 4th floor boys.

Nice guy finish last,

You have a good point but wouldn't the minority voice not be drowned by threats and coercion as empirically observed? Have you heard of Umno Youth threats to burn down the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall?

Maverick SM said...

Moo_t,

You have empirical observatory notations. I just hope for betterment.

Toolan,

Cool down; it may be a starting point for the betterment of mankind; let's hope.

Moo_t,

I didn't have Rais Yatim's article.

Beeranyone,

Your last para is written eruditely.

Merdekame,

Did I create hate? So, you agree that Ibrahim Ali and Tajuddin didn't create hate? I just wrote what was publish and express my concerns of myself; is that hate? Maybe, you are happy with Tajuddin's contention that all the minorities must suffer affirmative discrimination; and you are not part of the hate.

Kowsai,

I had forgotten about the definition of personal attack as expounded by Shabery.

White,

I admire your transliteration of the word injustice; maybe we should also say that the minorities should blame their forefathers for agreeing to the independence; if your explanation is accepted as correct.

Sandyow,

You do have a sensible point and I think we must accept the fact that we have different mental wavelength and perceptions on issues. Many may be out of pint and perspective but we should provide alignment and empathy.

Tun-Benggap,

I do not agree that Pak Lah is senile; we need clarification on the contradistinction in relation to the events aforesaid.

Bunnies,

We have differing views and perception; it is about opinion and opinion can be contrary; but aren't we in a discourse? Let's be focus on the issue in the article. Sorry if I worded it a bit harsh; I only intended to share my views.

Anonymous said...

We need to be respectful of differences and be sensitive to sentiments, and yet at the same time not bury our heads in the sand. A broad-sweeping statement, like we all have different perspective, misses the point and frustrate the entire purpose of facilitating discussions. Same can be seen outside of blogosphere, any discussion on Ketuanan Melayu is shot down as questioning inherent rights. For many non-malays, Malaysia is the only home we've ever known and will ever have, to be asked to "berambus balik ke China / India" - to feel hurt is justified. It's one thing to move forward with equitable development in mind, but to cling onto nostalgic supremacy and invoke that at any given moment to hush-hush any discourse on the matter - when will we ever progress?

Maverick SM said...

Tanie,

I surely share your philosophy and concern. It is sad that those who are enjoying unqualified concocted privileges due to the single fact that they had the bigger voices are more determined to suppress the minorities using their political domination and invoking fear and distress at all cost.
