Azizah quits Permatang Pauh today

News report from Malaysiakini:

Anwar Ibrahim announced today that he will contest a by-election for the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat which will be vacated by his wife and PKR leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Wan Azizah told a packed press conference this afternoon that she will be resigning as member of parliament for the seat but will retain her post as PKR president.

"I have submitted my resignation letter to the House speaker today," she said.

The Barisan Nasional will go wild now; they will mobilise everything and anything at their disposals to thwart any possibility of Anwar's comeback. Once Anwar is in Parliament then it would be more onerous to get him down. The nation will rock and be shaken to a new reality.

The arrest of Anwar now looks eminent.

PRESS STATEMENT
by Wan Azizah Wan Ismail

After deliberating with my family, the Keadilan party leadership and our partners in the Pakatan Rakyat, I have officially submitted my resignation as Member of Parliament of Permatang Pauh to the Speaker of Parliament YB Tan Sri Datuk Pandikar Amin Bin Hj. Mulia today to make way for my husband, Anwar Ibrahim, to contest as a candidate for Pakatan Rakyat in a by-election as soon as possible.

This is consistent with our goals towards securing a Parliamentary majority and forming a new government within this year.

This decision is the right decision for Malaysia.

The nation now faces some of the greatest challenges it has encountered since gaining independence. The UMNO-led Barisan Nasional government has mismanaged the economy and steered the nation towards a catastrophe. It has allowed the integrity of the justice system to fall into deeper infamy. It has stroked the flames of racism and driven a wedge of mistrust between Malays, Chinese and Indians, while thoroughly neglecting the needs of the indigenous peoples of Sabah and Sarawak.

Anwar Ibrahim has articulated a vision for Malaysia that has brought hope to the people. He has the experience and intelligence to reinvigorate our economy, and the charisma and integrity to unite the Malaysian people and restore credibility to our institutions of governance.

I will continue to serve as president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat and as chairperson of the Yayasan Aman (Peace Foundation).

I whole-heartedly thank my supporters in Permatang Pauh who have stood by me in the most difficult of times since September 1998 and have shared in the joy of victory we all experienced on March 8th. The future of our nation lies in the dedication and commitment to justice and freedom that I have experienced as your representative in Parliament and I look forward to many more years of serving you with sincerity and with humility.

DATO' SERI DR. WAN AZIZAH WAN ISMAIL
President Parti Keadilan Rakyat

WHATS THERE TO WORRY... KAN UMNO ADA EZAM!

AFTER ALL HE SAID HE GOT TONS OF ANWAR WRONDOINGS IN HIS CLOSET!

BUT IF EZAM CHICKENED OUT, UMNO COULD ALSO SEND BUNGA 'JEAN' RAYA PATRIOT TO CONTEST.

I'd prefer if he "takes over" the Federal Government through the most democratic means possible, if he indeed is capable of doing it. His call for MPs to defect is a no-go. To create a Parliament with razor-thin majority like that is inviting trouble, look at the Italian Parliament. And what's to say those MPs won't cross back, when their asking price is met? Two wrongs do not make a right. Shame though, I don't buy much of his rhetoric but to see the first women opposition leader to give way to her husband that way, I really respect her.

i have deep of respect for Wan Azizah.she's loyal n obedient to his husband.

but i dislike his act as a politician.vacating his position for his husband for fill-in aint what we say a "brave" act.why not Anwar just contest at Kulim at see how it goes?

Anwar is lucky to have a wife such as Wan Azizah.that guy should be thankful.but she's more of a politician now rather than a doctor.of course she's siding her husband.

Beware of BN's machinery, including the Election Commission. If PKR and Anwar are not careful, Anwar may be disqualified, and Permatang Pauh goes to BN!

gaga,

Ezam will have his chance now.

The Yarning,

I agree that two wrongs don't make one right. But two sodomy charge at peculiar time is such coincidental and amusing. Would this be rhetorics too?

Youth Attack,

There are good reasons to do so.

derock,

why do you call him a lucky idiot? You had also been sodomised by him?

Denzook,

Wan Azizah not Malay? Mahathir Malay? Datuk Azeez of Umno Putra is Malay? Are you Malay?

---007,

This has nothing to do with Kepala Batas as it is Anwar who wants to contest for Parliament and not Pak Lah who is calling a challenge.

raya is few months away,

A wife always side the husband; same like Rosmah and Jeanne. What about you?

Anak Merdeka,

You are absolutely right on point.

CK,

I may not agree with you. I only disagree if it is motivated by positions and with using money to entice them. If it is ideological and to do with injustice and unfairness as perceived by those defectors, it is justified. This is politics and this is the about political philosophy and ideology.

Looking at the previous Lunas & Ijok by-elections, this coming Permatang Pauh by-election might be the mother-of-all by-election battle.

Anyway, politicians (present & past) trying desperately to cling onto power by doing all dirty tricks including dishing out "Sodo mee" old recipe is really unheard of in this part of Asia except bolehland Malaysia, the so called "truelly Asia", is in fact a "uniquely Malaysia".

I hope God really bless Malaysia this time.

Will anwar suffer the fate of Benito Aquino of the Philippines?

Strange that Rocky Bru had this page http://rockybru.blogspot.com/2008/07/cops-to-arrest-anwar.html after publishing it yesterday.

If Rocky has wind the move by PDRM to arrest Anwar yesterday, did Anwar have the same information? Was the sudden resignation of Wan Azizah another political chess move to get Anwar off the hook on the sodomy allegations?

I think better we change our country's name to Mamakland to correctly relate our political activities to Bollywood!

Maverick SM said...

Yan,

I also hope God will bless Malaysia, but we don't know which Malaysian would be blessed and which would be cursed.

DS Wan Azizah is a strong woman, leader and Mother. For that she deserves a Tun-ship.

Government should revoke the Corruption Retired Judge Tun-ship and pass it over to DS Wan Azizah to fit Tun-ship quota.

Dont you agree...

Tai-Choon-Toi,

That's not the criterion of award for tunship.
