Be Wary of Bloggers!

NST Prime News Page 8

"Blogs are new, people should instead continue reading newspapers, listening to radio and watching television for accurate news."

"Newspapers, radio and television news are checked before they are published unlike blogs."

Quote for Today

Most people treat the present moment as if it were
an obstacle that they need to overcome. Since the
present moment is Life itself, it is an insane way to live.

Journalistic responsibility should apply equally, mainstream or alternative. we do see irresponsible reporting and strategic omission in both, but that's what happens when u come under someone's payroll. The freedom that the blogosphere has found itself to operate within is only possible, for better or worse, by the grace of Pak Lah. It's good to nurture a more critical thinking society with more independence of thought, I'd say like almost everything else in life, balance is the key.

Tanie,

Your viewpoints are fair and good. This should be our core ideology. Yes, we need critical thoughts and insightful informations to discern and analyze. Malaysians must be able to acquire knowledge and information to discern them and establish the facts from the fictions.

I truly appreciate your comments here. I hope all others will be fair in their views and comment intelligibly.

exactly. well-said.

but i am interested in this....
Newspapers, radio and television news are checked before they are published unlike blogs." CHECKED??? or censored???

Anonymous said...

both in fact.. checked for political correctness, and censored for oppossition viewpoint.

Anonymous said...

Tanie, you are an inspiration. If only all bloggers think and act like you... I do feel that bloggers time and time again hold a social responsibilty that they have to uphold too. Freedom and democracy without responsibilty? Is that the core Malaysian values we want for our children in the future? I certainly agree that in a way Pak Lah is the one who paved the way to greater democracy. It is a change, to as compared to the previous leadership.

Kudos.

CK,

You are a good guy!

Sandyow,

In general I agree with your points.

But I may not agree on the aspects of social responsibility that bloggers are to owe a duty of care because the term social responsibility entails social power to make decisions that affects the lives of the general population.

However, if you discern it with individual responsibility as a social animal then I would agree. This individual responsibility would include use of language, respect for others and respect to others culture and religion, not to harm others physically or hurl abuses that degrades another who did no harm to him, etc.

The term should not "abused" and used against individual's opinion of issues and values; neither should it act to prevent critical thoughts and opinions as a form of thought sharing.

The problem is, many people just can;t discern between social responsibility and liberty, and many cannot accept difference of opinion. You can observe that personal values and beliefs are often subject to abuses by way of imposing upon others and hurling abuses on general social and political opinions. Worse off, threats are used to suppress and oppress.

If only all bloggers are responsible and write the whole truth and not half truth and/or lies for WHATEVER reasons, personal or otherwise!

Alas, not all are.

The Sultan thought that, unlike blogs, the MSM still has that "mechanism" in placed to ensure credibility and responsible reporting. Cant balme him because many share his view on that.

Let me see, I should blog some title about

Be wary of UMNO (this is stale, everyone knows it)
Be wary of Badawi, the Mr good man(RPK has done this)
Be wary of Badawi on any sort of reform (the famous cry wolves story)
Be wary of Badawi crash Bolehland economy(now this is work in progress)

people who make sweeping comments have no inkling what blogs are all about or rather speak volume of their ability to comprehend the blogsphere ...

... political blogs, business blogs, health blogs, travel blogs, house blogs, technology blogs, fashion blogs, corporate blogs, project blogs, education blogs, niche blogs, classical music blogs, communication blogs, quizzing blogs, motivational blogs and legal blogs....

unlike msm which just shove everything ( crappy reporting, included ) down our troats, dynamics participatory journalism of blogs & bloggers brings together scattered presenters & learners and at time connects people through affiliation network via blogroll.

Warrior2,

You have va point there: if only all bloggers; I think you left out commentators who have also preformed and biases too. Do you believed the MSM has mechanism to ensure responsible reporting or are you closing your minds to the evidences and facts that the MSM are in fact used as tools to spread propagandas and had often been biased towards the ruling regime; I believed you would have read Zaid Ibrahims comment on journalism; I also believed you do read newspapers and have the intelligence to discern the truth from the lies as espoused by the MSM in various articles.

Sadly, there are many who had benefited from the corrupt system and would choose to set their mindset biased towards one attitude and objectivism.

Maverick SM said...

Moo_t,

The you would be classified as bad bloggers; to many, as long as you praise the ruling regime, join-in their game of corruption and pay upfront money, you are a good blogger.

Info about the Pahang ruler.

A student of the Malay College Kuala Kangsar, he received diplomas in public administration from Worcester College, Oxford and Exeter University.

Oh, thanks god, he didn't attend the Anglo-Saxon university.

Otherwise, it will be my yet another blog of "Is it progress when cannibal use knife and fork?"

Maverick SM said...

Whattheheck,

The facts is that we have a biased media and a law which controls the licence of medias that ensured that they remained biased.

It is sad that human with brains are given a mind and intelligence to discern; they read news and articles and then they form their own opinions and perceptions: the blogs to do have the power to change the mindsets of individuals. The good thing of the blogs are that they provide differing viewpoints and thoughts and enhance informations which had been suppressed and hidden by the those in power. Alas, we preferred to remain in the 3rd world mentality.

Maverick SM said...

Moo_t,

CORRECTIONS: Then you would be classified as bad bloggers; to many, as long as you praise the ruling regime, join-in their games of corruption and pay upfront money, you are a good blogger.

I think they want to call themselves 'bloggers' now.

First, they label bloggers based on their own behaviors, read: cannot be trusted. Then, they jump out and say, "HAH, we are bloggers coz we fit the criteria"!. lol

Are the Pahang ruler a busy man or too old to learn something "old"? IT seems he simply copycat politikus rubbish and mumbling as his own.

Blogs, or weblog, are actually has a long history traits. It doesn't pop up all in sudden. It is a series of internet website and forum evolutions, that took place since 1980, when Usenet established. The internet ecology keep evolving and blogs are just part of it.

Flame, spam, rumours, fake news, propaganda etc are NOTHING new to the internet world, and the real world.

People in the internet ecology are trained to verify the source before taking it for granted. Even better, because of spirit of sharing and mud slinging, netizen are FORCE to justify all site of story.

And all this is beyond imagination of ruler/politikus that used to spoon feed system. Or perhaps, they refuse to "understand" it.

Warrior2,

yes, the MSM has 'check and balance', but don't bloggers also are responsible for what they write? and they are also liable to be sued and got to jail too.

haven't you heard yet that Raya Petra went to jail recently? bloggers maybe writing on internet, but they are also legal minded, responsible too. and those that misbehave, just like any MSM, you can also sue them in court.

how come i never see any countries having problems with bloggers, unlike malaysia. is there something wrong somewhere? if malaysian bloggers are more naughty, then just sue them for slander, and etc. what's the problem?

and didn't we also have cyber-laws, and also probably also cyber-troopers.

same legal procedings and law applied to MSM and bloggers.

Unlike MSM, what "mechanism" is used by bloggers or applied to bloggers to ensure "credibility" of things that they wrote? Thats my angle! Sure MSM are not that "independent", but are bloggers totally "clean and pure"?

If every bloggers are responsible and print the truth, we wont be debating about it and the Pahang Sultan wont be commenting on bloggers.

Anonymous said...

It's good that Pak Lah is more open in allowing freedom in terms of voicing out opinions.
This was not even possible before this.

Jefus said...

critical thinking is vital. when reading MSM or blogs, it would be a good habit to make cross checks with the information one picks up when reading them from independent reliable sources.

the credibility of the source. the track record of the source, and even so, the slant of the data one gets from the blog or the MSM news will be noticeable.

the evolution of news dissemination be it blogging, MSM have been / will be fastpaced. will we be blogging / pecking out on the keyboard in a comment box five years from now? i don't know.

the bottom line is, the reading public must grow in maturity in watching the material he/she is reading. become a critical reader.

maybe it's about time we learn from other countries about how they manage their cyberlaws.

but i thought with MSC, we are supposed to be the leader in cyberjaya stuff?

but never mind, it's not too late to learn, when if we are a follower now.

Yesterday was History, Today is A Gift, Tomorrow is Mistery.

In the land of Pak Lah The Most Prime Monkey on Earth, Tomorrow is Misery and Today is Disaster.

Relying on Newspaper is like depending on Toilet paper to clean the Ass when there is clean water to choose from.

Only dumb and daft will choose Pak Lah and the Bomber controlled mainstream media!

Maverick SM said...

Hasilox,

They are contrarians and so are those who are cronies and rent-seekers.

Moo_t,

You have said it clear; alas, how many could understand the fundamentals.

Birds Talking Too,

Your toilet time is great!!!

Powerlogic,

It's like saying Mugabe has now killed less people.

Jefus,

The problem is: the mindset is calcified deeply in the doctrines of such ketuanan thing and it would be impossible to ingrain new thoughts and liberal thoughts.

din_tanjung,

Blogs are universal and individuated, unpaid and without the support and leverage as compared to MSM. Readers have the prerogative not to read them nor to visit them; and it is abound throughout the whole wide world. Most do not speak as an organization nor an institution and are not bound by strict rules and are not bound by political patronages. They write for fun and to enlightened themselves while seeking cyber-collectivism.

Dumb-Bomber-Sei-Four,

You have a good point; however, many are calcified, particularly those who had advantage and benefits from the regimes.

I think it was Ronald Reagan who once said to his staff in dealings with the Russians (still Cold War period) "Trust and then verify".

This might be applicable to blogs since one does not know whom the author is unless they provide their identity. This differs from the MSM where the personalities are known.

However, the MSM (in Malaysia) is known for not providing ALL the facts or balance, in my opinion.

I think the people have made their choice. They would rather read blogs than the NST!

bloggers are like prostitutes and gigolos who are willing to do anything to attract attention competing with porn. websites.

BLUES

Anonymous said...

Hello Mave,

Wow. That's harsh to say bloggers like that. Bloggers are just journalist with liberal ideas and critical thinking person which to share opinion and ideas with other people.

Bloggers must have their own ethics in order to gain respect from other viewers. Even though bloggers have freedoms in writing articles and news with their best speculation, their products may contribute to the mind thinking of the public viewers in the country and generally in the world.

Maverick SM said...

Purple Haze,

You have good points and I agree; sadly we have myopic Malaysians who do not have the intelligible mindsets.

Gongkaukau,

I think the people now have far wider information base to refer rather than relying on MSM.

Blues,

You are right; however, readers are prostitutes themselves them they indulged in such activities of the bloggers whom you called prostitute and gigolos.

Wisdomthinkers,

You have te best intelligible conception; sadly we have morons around who had little to contribute in this world of information and communication.
